Saddest experience we have ever had with a vet clinic. We chose this clinic to help us with the difficult decision of putting our beloved dog of 15 years down to rest. They lacked compassion and only cared about collecting a payment. Our dog was so uncomfortable and couldn't stand or walk without assistance and all the clinic would talk about was money. Our dog was laying on the table suffering and the clinic made us give a payment before they would treat our animal. It was so heartbreaking to see our old girl laying there suffering for so long while the clinic focused on collecting their payment and provided no comfort to the dog, or us. They charged us 500 dollars for no compassion, no cremation, just to put our dog to sleep. That is criminal!!!!!! We will NEVER go back. Never got a call back from the clinic manager either so don't waste your time. Just take your beloved pets somewhere else.

Naked opportunism. Be careful before taking your pet there. I went to get a CVI (health certificate) for my cat to travel with me domestically. When I made the appointment, I was told the cost would be $100, that the CVI was included. 9 days before flying, I go for the appointment to be told the visit would cost an additional $65. Apologies were made for the unwitting employee who misquoted the cost. This doesn’t take away from the fact that the whole visit took 10 min. 2 for taking my cat’s temperature and examining her ears. 8 for me to ask why the cost was so exorbitant and Dr. R. Walling to justify it: the employee’s fault. People, there’s no good reason why a piece of paper should cost $60, especially when the checkup consists of nothing more than a cursory glance. What got to me the most is this piece of paper needs to be obtained 10 days prior to travel. So the vet has you unless you want to risk missing a flight. Predatory practice.o

If I could give this place a 0/5 star I would. I called at 4:36 pm today 02/14/24 to ask if Compassionate Care had notified them that our beloved senior dog died last week. The receptionist that answered the phone Riley (or Rylee ) cut me off mid-sentence before I was finished talking. She said yes they did received a notification from Compassionate Care last week. I then told her that we received a pet reminder postcard in the mail today for our senior dog that died last week again she cuts me off mid-sentence before I could finished talking. I asked her politely to please let me finish talking first before she interrupts me again . All I wanted is to ask if she could please turn off all future pet reminders of our dead senior dog, since this was really hurtful and upsetting receiving a vaccine reminder for our senior dog who died 7 days ago (last Thursday). I felt that the receptionist was apathetic, rude, disrespectful, dismissive, indifferent, inconsiderate, unprofessional, and brusque. Furthermore, this is not even the worst part, when I asked her if she could please turn off his pet reminders she responded with "okay I will do that" in a snappy-snarky tone then hanged up the phone without even saying I am so sorry for your loss or I am sorry that the pet reminder postcard was sent by mistake. Also, to add insult to injury the receptionist Riley (Rylee) had the audacity to slam the phone on me. Due to this terrible experience we will not be taking our 3 pets to this veterinary hospital ever again.

Update: Second time coming in was just as great at the first time. Felt listened to and formulated a plan to figure out what is going on with our girl. 10/10, thank you so much! Dr Allen was amazing and so was our vet tech, but I cannot remember her name, it ended with ie. Only vet office we will use in Salem.Original Review:We came in with an emergency situation and they handled it great. I felt listened to and they explained everything. I am so grateful y’all were open and could make the terrible situation as good as you possibly could. Thank you!

We couldn’t be happier with the care we received for our dog at this VCA clinic. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. We needed an urgent visit for our dog who was in pain. We were able to be seen the same day I called. The vet tech and doc listened to our concerns and kept updating us as we were waiting. The doc came out twice to show us xrays, talk about treatment options, and come up with a plan of care. We really appreciate how detail oriented the staff was, and the great care they took with our senior dog. We can highly recommend this vet. Our dog was back to her normal self within days! Thank you so much VCA Salem!

I couldn't be more grateful for this wonderful group of people. I unexpectedly had to put down my best friend. I was not ready for this. From beginning to end, every single individual showed so much empathy and compassion for what we were having to endure. From delivering the hard message of what Grizzly was going through to giving me the best options available to make his passing as peaceful as possible. Even after his passing, they have still shown their compassion through a heartfelt, hand-written letter that touched my heart deeply. Thank you so much, Dr. Wermuth, Linda, Courtney, Meagan, Madison, Emily, Katie, Riley, and Kaye. The support you've shown me and Grizzly will never be forgotten. May you all receive the love you so graciously give❤️

I called in advance after our dog fell out of our pick up. They were ready for us as we walked through the door. Dr. Hovenden was thorough and presented us with our treatment options. We felt very well taken care of and happy our pup is home and healthy. ❤️

The staff and vet we saw were pleasant. However, whatever the policy they have in place that requires you to pick out what urn you want for your pet (and whatever else was on the paper of options to choose) and pay BEFORE they will put them down is not acceptable. My dog was suffering in front of us and we made the difficult decision to let him go in peace, but they would not move forward until I checked these boxes…while our dog laid dying in front of us.I should also mention, I had already paid their emergency fee for the vet to assess my dog, so they had my card on file.I will never use this VCA for any of my pets again due to this experience.

I absolutely loved the doctor who helped out our cat. She went above and beyond. As far as pricing goes: Wow. This was almost a $500 dollar visit. I'm very fortunate that I had a family member willing to help me out with the costs. Because man, it was NOT cheap. The visit itself was about 150 bucks. Testing was another 150 and then medications were crazy expensive.Grateful for their help and for their kindness but I definitely would not recommend this place if you are on a budget.

The staff and especially Dr Bill were amazing! Unfortunately Stephanie Wermuth was horrible. She told me to put my dog down right away and there was nothing for her to do for us. I obviously went against her advice and took my baby home. Good thing for Dr Bill he helped us and I could tell he genuinely cared for his patients.

From someone who works in a thankless career to another-thank you. Your work is appreciated. I brought my 13 week old puppy in and though we never concluded what was causing his sudden illness, all possible causes were thoroughly explained and medication recommended. A month later and he's doing great. Yes it was expensive but it was worth it. Veterinarians have one of the most stressful careers, I feel like most people can't even fathom. Kindness, gratitude and compassion-everyone could sure use more of that.

Thank you to all the staff that was very supportive of us and very very heartfelt and caring during happen to put our our sweet 18-year-old Chihuahua down. The vet nurse had recently just put her dog down the month before and I felt that because of that we experienced the highest level of respect and warmth that we could possibly receive. It was already hard enough to do with the situation but to have such a caring staff take such effort into making sure those last moments for us and for our dog We're not traumatizing or negative in any way. I highly highly highly recommend using this service for anything but especially for any kind of euthanasian or if you think that might be the way to go. The doctor was an especially kind man. In no way were we ever rushed and it felt like we were at home with family.

Came to be SeenPros: super convenient location right off commercial.Cons: Came in at 6:55/7pm to try and get my sick pup seen. However, they dont see patients after 7pm even though they close at 8pm. The place was super empty when I walked in so was a little bit upset about that. A hospital that refuses to see patients because they wana leave in an hour is a tad bit mind boggling.

We recently had our first encounter with VCA, and it was unfortunately a situation where we had to say goodbye to our beloved pet. From the initial phone call to see if we could come in, to this morning when we received a condolences card hand signed with notes from the staff, our experience with the staff at VCA was beyond what we expected or hoped for.Saying goodbye to a deeply loved animal is very difficult. We can't say how much we appreciate the empathy and kindness we were shown through the whole process. We will now be transferring our other pets' care to VCA and can't wait to work with them again in the future, for happier visits.

Do not bring your pet to VCA Salem and Dr. Walling on Commercial St. He is a fraud and Kyle Palmer the office manager have both provided inadequate care, lied and gaslit us from the moment I showed concern that we may not be able to afford a $1000 bill (for a yeast rash). He treated our dog like a toaster and both staff members showed zero concern for her well being and discomfort. Downplayed the severity as probably a bee sting but then the moment I suggested any alternatives he got snippy and told us our dog may need surgery if we don't agree to their plan. I asked questions to get any sort of direction and he repeated what I said back, as if it were part of his professional diagnosis. He refused us any help beyond the $1000 bill for sedation and tests "that may tell us nothing" and --- yet online his bio states that skin conditions are his focus of care which is obviously incorrect. He walked in and asked who I was and then says your dog is hard to restrain. And we're supposed to trust this guy to put our dog under sedation for surgery? It felt off from the beginning and every vet we spoke to has been very forthcoming that our dog is a sweet girl and sedation is needed since they are in pain, not implying that they they are problem dogs. We've never had an unprofessional experience with any vet or doctor until now. One interesting and unprofessional email 2 weeks later and zero calls but I'm sure VCA Salems owner will comment we're wrong even though she wasn't there and Kyle wasn't either and he curiously forgot what he said after. Kyle Palmer awkwardly laughed when I replied our dog may be dead in 2 weeks while we wait it out and still, nothing! Dr. Walling and this office is unprofessional and clearly not qualified to provide equitable care. And I'm fairly positive it's illegal to lie in chart notes.Thankfully our dog is good but I would never return as we aren't positive he won't retaliate against her in the process, it's that strange. What a waste of money but more importantly precious time and suffering.
