My mom gave her old typewriter to my daughter so we brought it by Type Space for a quick check-up. Not only did Tony clean it up and make sure everything was in good working order, her also took the time to show my daughter all of the functions, use the serial number to look up the year of manufacture, and emailed a PDF of the original manual. We will definitely be heading back here for all of our typewriter needs!

One of the coolest gems in Portland! This small store is curated with beautiful machines which line the walls. I brought in two of my grandmother’s typewriters. They have immense sentimental value and I was so excited to get them operable again. Tony, the proprietor went above and beyond. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about his work. And quick to share this knowledge. Plus his pricing is very fair. Tony serviced my grandmother’s typewriters and took time to explain the parts, what needed to be fixed, and patiently answered my endless questions.
I ended up falling hard for and purchasing a lovely matte black Olympia made in Western Germany in 1951. It’s a stunner!
This is a must visit place… you will not be disappointed.

Antony is a fantastic technician and all-around generous guy who has immense knowledge of machines old and new. He helped me with my 50's era Smith-Corona machine; not only did he replace the ribbon (and show me proper technique for doing so), clean the innards and replace a missing part, he also installed new rubber feet for the machine - parts he manufactures himself. This, all promptly and after immediate, first-time inspection. First rate shop with really interesting machines of all kinds, artwork, and books to peruse.

First time owner of a typewriter and I could not have had a better introduction to the machine I bought or the kind of folks that work on them. 10/5 stars.

The owner, Antony, is as good as they come and I can't recommend this business enough. I walked in with a typewriter I knew nothing about and got an on the spot hands on tutorial, function test and cleaning, new ribbon, typewriter cover, and a printout of my typewriter functions- very reasonable pricing as well. I'm blown away by the customer service and his willingness to help. It's obvious he has a passion for typewriters and I'll be back for sure. Thank you Type Space for keeping these incredible machines alive and well!

Go to this shop! It is the most fun and has YOUR machine!
The best selection of typewriters you will ever find in one room! And they've all been lovingly fixed up so they work as well as they did for their first owners!
The shop owner, Tony, showed me several machines with no pressure to buy anything. (He just really loves typewriters and is glad you're there!)
I fell in love with a cursive machine that he had inked up with purple ribbon and bought it for a very fair price. Tony walked me through ALL of the features & explained the warranty (yeah, he even guarantees his machines!) and gave me an open invitation to come visit or call with any questions that come up.
Tony is wonderful and spending time in his shop was an absolute delight!

Definitely recommend for getting a new typewriter or typewriter repair/parts! Tony was super knowledgeable, helpful, and informative. I brought in a typewriter I bought at an estate sale and he went through it to check that everything worked, showed me how everything worked, and even touched it up for me. Very generous with his time, fair, and very kind.

What a fantastic thing, this typewriter shop. I received a thorough explanation of the typewriter I bought, though thankfully he also emailed me a link to a PDF of the user manual. Excellent customer service!

Tony is welcoming, and incredibly generous with his time and knowledge.
When I visited Type Space with my dad (an avid typewriter collector), I thought I would be looking at cool typewriters way out of my price range. However, I found much more! I expressed my interest in learning how to take apart and refinish typewriters, and Tony recommended an old Royal. When I showed interest in an Underwood No. 5, he stated that it would be an accelerated learning process, but encouraged me to take on the challenge. He then found me the perfect machine, complete with a ten key decimal tabulator add-on, and gave me the best deal possible. I left the shop excited about my new hobby, and confident that I could reach out to Tony if/when I need help or have questions.
I will definitely be returning to Type Space, and look forward to ordering new feet for my Underwood when it is all put back together.

This is a Portland gem of a shop. Left and right walls are lined with bookshelves which are stacked to the hilt with typewriters. The walls are hung with signage and posters of vintage typewriter ads and various bits of typewriter ephemera. The place smells like machine lubricant. There’s a big table in the middle of the store where you can pull up a chair and poke and prod and test a few typewriters for yourself.
I swung by the store on a Saturday right as Tony was opening for the day. He was very welcoming and spent over an hour with me as I touched every machine and asked a million questions. (This guy knows his stuff, and if he doesn’t know–he’ll find it out.) When I finally decided on a machine–a little Underwood Universal still in its Great Depression Era case– Tony told me he’d have it refurbed and ready for use by the end of the day. When I told him I needed to bus home he graciously promised to hand deliver it to me the next day for no extra cost.
The next day, Tony showed up at my door with a beautifully refurbished typewriter including brand new feet he’d cast in the shop the night before. 10/10 experience. I cannot recommend Type Space enough.
