They are the least corrupt of all the Charities I am familiar with unfortunately at this time they are not giving away food boxes in Portland I strongly believe in their causes

They truly care about people. I've had a really rough year and they have helped give me some food to hold me over so I could eat.

How does a place that gets their gains from donated items charge full price for extremely used items? Vintage glassware - $14.99 / Faded sweaters - $12.99 - Make the overhead to stay open but supply the needy with affordable items! That's the reason we donate our gently used products to SA in the first place. Maybe give back by providing jackets and blankets to the homeless too while you slash prices. I'd like to come back to see positive change someday

On December 1st I arrived in Portland from Detroit as I searched for a New home. As I exited the Greyhound bus along the curb, I expected the worst day of my life to begin. But, it didn’t because I found reasonable accommodation in the city. Several days thereafter, a hometown friend suggested the Hawthorne Hostel as a temporary solution. I was skeptical at first as I found myself thrust into an environment that emphasized communal harmony over individual station and position in life. Like too many, I couldn’t have been more wrong. I was able to interact with people from across the nation and around the world. My epiphany: we aren’t as different as we think we are. Contact and communication built Bridges and potential lifelong friendships in a short period of time. Sharing meals lead to sharing experiences and ideas: this, in turn, stimulated discussion and fostered greater understanding. And hope for a better tomorrow in a reasonably priced accommodation that United people from here and around the world for a short period of time. So I leave the experience of the hostel behind, but never forgotten, as I transition into the city of Portland and search for more affordable accommodation and friendship.
