Don’t shop this store. The price for an ice cream carton is $7.49 !! One reason for that is that the store Is overrun with theft. Almost every time myself or my tenants go in there, there is someone stealing stuff, sometimes huge amounts of stuff, and walking out the front door or the back door. The store does nothing to stop them. Because of this, they come back again and again for more. They are being hit many many times a day, all day long. And the store simply adds the losses onto the prices. If this keeps up, they’ll probably just close the store and we need it in our close-in neighborhood. It is shocking what goes on. And yet they do nothing to monitor the exits in any way. Even if the store wants to blame the city, they still do nothing to curb this. These people actually feel entitled to just help themselves to whatever they want. They go for the expensive stuff, leaving me to carefully shop the sales, coupons, private labels, etc.. Costco has fixed the problem, Walmart does a pretty good job, even Fred Meyers is addressing it. But not Safeway.
Note to all bad guys: Shop Safeway—it’s free!

The workers here are usually really kind and some of the older customers too. I struggle with my mental health and some days I find so many people my age in this neighborhood be judgmental and selfish making assumptions about me. They really have helped me stay hopeful on so many occasions. As a former courtesy clerk during college I’m grateful for their service to our community.

I had a great experience at Safeway on Hawthorne - I was greeted at the door and helped by a staff, who then checked in on me later to make sure I was able to use the app.
Clean store, great selection of product, reasonable prices with lots of deals through the app!

I'm here because I wanted to report that the review "M" posted below is completely false. The man that was tased is an aggressive constant threat in the store. Not only to customers like myself but the employees alike. I have seen this man physically assault not just the employees but actual customers. He's not just a thief but he's an aggressive man that I always worry about is in the store when I come. I'm extremely proud of the employees for finally taking action after multiple incidents of this gentleman and his aggressive behavior. I will be extremely sad as a faithful long-term paying customer to see if they are punished for protecting us and themselves. They absolutely reasonable with the actions that they had against a threat that is continuously here and always a problem for everyone. Please praise the employees and not punish them. They deserve at least that much.
-A very faithful and thankful customer

The review posted by M is false! The man that was chased out of the store because he frequently goes into the store stealing and assaulting people. I've witnessed it as a customer multiple times.

I was shopping in the store this evening when I suddenly heard a series of loud zapping sounds, followed by yelling. I turned around and I saw a male Safeway employee (his name tag said Elisha) chasing a customer, who had his arms full of groceries, and this Safeway employee was tasing him repeatedly with a stun gun. The customer's hands were full, so he wasn't a physical threat to the employee, and he started running for the door (he was all the way in the back by the bakery) dropping food items as he went. The employee zapped the customer over and over again, at least a dozen times, yelling at him to get out. If this individual had a heart condition or a pacemaker, the employee could have killed him, and after he got him out the door, he was standing at the front near the checkstands, laughing with other employees. I understand that theft and transients are a problem, but Safeway is a huge corporation and the few items this man took were not going to bankrupt them. This was assault with a deadly weapon, and the number of times he tased a defenseless individual was clearly excessive force. I will be contacting the news and the police (who probably won't even respond).

I hate Safeway like a sore on my lip. I hate their setup. I hate their pricing. Their deli is gnarly and the employees are never pleasant. Go to Fred Meyer.

With the rise of self-checkout, customer experience has gone from poor to awful.

Reopen self-checkout past 9pm. Waiting in line for 10 minutes because they refuse to open another lane is ridiculous. This used to be the last good Safeway in Portland.
