Immediately greeted by a very busy, smiling tattoo artist. Remarkable customer service; first impressions matter and played a factor as to why I chose to stay. I was a little apprehensive about how the next available tattoo artist was going to receive me due to the fact that I was a walk-in. Change dissolved that anxiety; his tone and body language were welcoming. Change didn't make me feel as if I was going to be rushed in and out; the opposite actually. My little tattoo reflects the time, attention to detail and care Change took; he made sure it matched me and my femininity. A long time promise finally completed.

booked with the owner Change 2 months prior and when i got there he said he'd lost my email with the tattoo info, then took 2 hours to draw it all up and ended up charging me almost double what he'd quoted originally

Jon Crook is an INCREDIBLE artist, and Powell is so lucky to have him.
I met him for the first time at a Halloween flash in 2018 and got tatted by him for the first time in 2019.
Before I went Jon for the first time, I went to a shop in Dallas that I had been to once before; I thought they were good, but the dudes at the shop that day were AWFUL. They were mean, sexist, & condescending. They thought they knew best and ignored what I wanted. I cussed them out & left before getting inked. I seriously thought all artists were aholes. Then I met Jon in Carrolton, TX and everything just CLICKED. I learned that tattoos are a meaningful experience with an artist and that it could be enjoyable and therapeutic. I told him about the last artist and he was appalled and apologetic even though he had no associate with that shop or those people whatsoever. Jon was incredible my first day in his shop, and I’ve been with him since.
I’ve brought 5 people to his old shop and tell everyone about them because of him. He did my three matching tattoos with my best friend and gave my sister her first two tattoos—I wouldn’t have trusted her with anyone else. He’s the kind of artist you sing praises about and want everyone to experience. He takes after care, client satisfaction, and safety seriously, always takes the designs I make and turns them into something even more beautiful, values and listens to my opinions, trusts my judgement, and was incredible in every way. He’s the artist that is willing to put a stencil on you 10 times just to be sure you’re happy and won’t be bothered if you end up going with the first placement!
I was always excited to see him and would update him on my big life events during our sessions. He would take time to actively listen and engage in the conversation. I met him while in school to become a teacher (in which he was always sure to encourage me to succeed in). I did end up becoming a teacher in 2020, and Jon would listen to my endless rants and stories about my students. I allow my students to pick out a tattoo for me every year, and Jon has tatted each of them for me in the best way possible. He would listen to the background and reasoning behind every tattoo. He would recall conversations from our past sessions and continue to engage in those discussions with me when I’d come back. He’s the kind of man that has never met a stranger!
All in all, he’s awesome and incredible, and his leaving was a huge loss for DFW, but a huge win for Portland. Jon is the artist you will never want to part with! I cannot recommend him enough.
I hope that life drops me in Oregon one day so I can get inked by him again and meet the rest of the incredible staff at Powell Tattoos!

Jon Crook over Powell Tattoos was an absolute delight to work with, very very patient with my indecisiveness, stayed after hours to finish up the tattoo, was talkative and very friendly and professional. Highly recommend going to him!!

This is the best overall experience I've had in any tattoo shop. I've gotten a bunch of tattoos over the last 20 years from artists all around the US, Central America, and South America, and this place had the best vibes of any shop I've been to. Everyone was nice, but not "overly nice salesperson" style nice. It was relaxed, but professional, and it felt naturally welcoming. It just kind of had the perfect mix of everything.
My specific artist, Jon Crook, was super easy to work with and patient, and just a genuine and good guy. I don't have any good pictures of what I got, but I got a piece that's all linework, and it's just super clean and solid. It has consistent details, and it's just objectively well-done. He's light handed, quick, and I wish I had more tattoo money to spend right now because I'd go right back this weekend. Really wish I could.
Overall it was just a really easy and relaxed experience, and I'd recommend Jon and the shop to almost anyone. I'm excited to have a shop to go back to now. Pretty sweet.

i had such an amazing experience! 10/10, i was a walk-in and i called about an hour beforehand to let them know. justin helped me out, drew up the tattoo pretty quick, and we got started. he was sooo kind and the environment was clean and very calming. i'm definitely going back for more!!Service: Tattoos

I’ve been in multiple times now to either ask for design assistance or get tattooed, and every experience I’ve had has been absolutely amazing. Change seems like he has actually nailed down the perfect combination of a professional yet fun tattoo shop. I’ve been to “cheaper” places in the past, but it’s true what they say, you get what you pay for and everyone at Powell is very talented!This is a super safe environment for marginalized folx and for me that is the most important factor in whether or not I support a business. Time and time again the employees here have proven to be genuine and have everyone’s best interest in mind and I am so glad I stumbled across this shop!Services: Tattoo design
