I just started so I’m still in beginner class but they definitely care about giving you a good foundation of movement and tradition in beginner classes.
The advanced classes seem to involve randori(sparring?) at the end regularly and everyone is very friendly.
Senseis are friendly and experts at Judo for sure.
As a physical therapist, the way they explain techniques translates well to my brain.
Def excited to continue here

I've been training here for a little over 2 years. Old school dojo so expect a lot of bowing and traditions. Most of the time is spent on stand up grappling, so the ground grappling level is not gonna be as strong as bjj. There's about 30 to 45 minutes of sparring in every class. The people are some of the kindest and most respectful I've met, there is a strong sense of community and everyone looks out for each other's safety first.

My 15 year old son has been attending classes for about 8 months now. He researched and found Obukan Judo and as they say the rest is history. I’ve been around a lot of variety in the martial arts world and this dojo and the instructors are by far some of the best in the US. Sensei Mark is exceptional with the beginners, providing a strong foundation. Sensei Rod is an enthusiastic, generous and empowering instructor. The accumulated years of all the instructors is formidable. The community is welcoming, supportive and safe. I couldn’t ask for better mentors for my son. I wish I found them when my boys were little. They are affordable. They provide real skills and promotions are not gratuitous, but well earned. Proud to be a part of the historical dojo and highly recommend them for the best kodokan judo martial arts.

Obukan is an outstanding dojo to train in Judo, with a team of talented and knowledgeable sensei who are dedicated to helping students of all ages and skill levels achieve their full potential. My 8yo son has been attending practices here for several months, and the improvement in his physical condition has been truly remarkable. He is rarely bothered by asthma now and I attribute much of his progress in physical condition to the instruction and attention he receives from the sensei. One thing that sets Obukan apart is the fun and engaging atmosphere. The sensei know how to keep the kids motivated and engaged in learning Judo. My son is always very eager to get to the practice 30 minutes early. But it's not just about having fun - the sensei are also deeply committed to instilling discipline, respect, and sense of tradition to their students. The rich history of the dojo is evident in every aspect of training, and it's truly inspiring to see how much the sensei care about preserving and sharing this legacy Overall, I can't recommend Obukan dojo enough. If you're looking for a welcoming and supportive community to train in Judo, this is the place to be. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced Judoka, you will find everything you need to succeed and thrive here. Thank you to all of the sensei for all that you do!

If you are looking for a martial arts class in the area, try Obukan! I practiced Judo over 20 years as a national level competitor in Japan, also taught in California. I've never seen a dojo in the states offers a traditional kata class that can be barely found even in Japan, but Obukan.I'm so impressed that this dojo teaches traditional Kodokan judo that includes respect, discipline, and basic skills for everyone. There are many judo/jujitsu places that only teach techniques to win, but not the basics that leads to injuries. My 4.5 years old daughter and I practice at Obukan 3 times a week. She enjoys practicing new skills and learning lots of Japanese. I highly recommend here!

Obukan is one of the oldest Judo schools in the country thus they have a lot of black belts that want to teach the next generation of Judo practitioners. The school is a nonprofit so dues are very reasonable. Obukan is the real deal.

I restarted my judo after a long hiatus. Walking into a new Dojo with a brand new black belt that I was just awarded only a few months before my long break, I was really nervous. I quickly found out that it was unnecessary. Everyone was so welcoming and I felt right at home again. The level of dedication of all the Sensei's and senior black belt is unmatched. I have learned so much from the well of their judo knowledge for the last 2 years and I am very satisfied with my progress. I can't wait to take my young sons onto Obukan's tatami with me.

If you are looking for beginner but also high level Judo, this place is perfect! There are several amazing instructors each with a different but collaborative take on Judo. Not only that, but there is a plethora of black belts to share their knowledge with you as well! You can really tell the difference at the tournaments when you see an Obukan player vs. any other dojo!
