I typically come in and ask for the largest prime rib they have and then ask that it be cut into steaks, which I then share with my partner. Has not been a problem in the past. The last time I came in they didn't want to do this and just wanted me to take what was already in the case, so a lot of small/medium cuts that didn't split well between two people. I should have insisted, but I was already there and made a special trip. As months have gone by and we've been eating these smaller steaks, it's made me think I'll no longer go out of my way. There are closer places for me. Otherwise, it's a good place to get meat and I'm sure you'll get great meat from them.

The selection and quality of their products is excellent. Hands down the best butcher shop in Portland. Make before you leave to grab a rack of smokey barbecued ribs by the door, you won't be disappointed!!

Absolute trash for wild game butcher. Every time we open a package we have to re-butcher the meat to remove hair, silver skin, etc. We have never had this experience with any butcher and have used many over the years, as well as butchered our own.

It’s difficult to describe the quality of Gartner’s without swearing, but this is a family site, so I’ll do my best.
It’s not just that they have absolutely top quality meat products prepared and sold by helpful experts — it’s that those experts really go above and beyond to ensure you get exactly what you need. I highly suggest walking up, telling the person at the counter what sort of dish you’re preparing, then let them suggest the meat. I’ve got a weekly date with amazing Philly cheesesteaks now, thanks to the wisdom and helpfulness of Gartner’s staff, and I’ll never go to another meat store.

I love the Beef Bacon here.. and marinated short ribs and chicken thighs. But when I asked to have a thinner slice for Beef Bacon they have to charge an extra $1.28 or more per pound. That’s ridiculous, my thought was you are gonna cut it anyway and dial the cutter to how customer likes yet you have to charge extra. it does not make any sense to me. it ok if he said $1,28 extra for changing the thickness as total not per every lbs. It’s a rip off. Please explain this reason. Since then I stop going for years. yesterday, I went and still the same. and the guy said this is the thickness, if i want thinner to charge extra. Wow.. cane home fried it, it’s like eating a bacon steak rather than enjoying a thinner slice of bacon. This is it for me. may not come back again coz Gartners not wanting customer satisfaction.

This place had a long line that moved quickly. When I reached the front of it I didn't feel rushed by the counter person they took there time and answered all of my questions. I will be back to this gem of a meat market.

We stopped at this place on the way from the airport, driving to the coast. My husband is Austrian ?? and we always stop for German food and sausage shops. This place did not disappoint! They have everything! They even gave our kids free sausages. The bratwurst was excellent. The people are so nice too.

Such a Really great place to smell all the meats and the cooked ribs near the entrance doors are a big bonus to get you in the mood for some meat. I was really surprised how affordably priced everything was. Definitely will be back
