This is such a fun store! The owners really have quite the collection on their hands. If you have an hour or so to spare you should pop in here sometime. You’ll definitely want to give yourself some time to really look around and explore. Tightly packed with stories and endless knowledge, you’ll find yourself getting lost in this tiny place.

Best yarn store & best bookstore in Portland!! The yarn is incredibly priced and I've found some real gems of skeins. The owners are super nice too!

Loaded with books, stacked to the ceiling. It was calm and inviting, although very cramped. There's not much seating except a few stools here and there that block the shelves and walk spaces. I particularly enjoyed it and the selections available. The man working in the bookstore was very kind and helpful. He provided good reading suggestions based on the books I was purchasing.

This is the best yarn/bookstore in Portland. Books stacked sky high with yarn tucked in too. It's the cutest little blue house. And Amanda and friends are just the most helpful friendliest folx you'll ever meet. Just go there and you'll see

This was the perfect cozy spot that I needed on a rainy Monday afternoon. The yarn selection is small but delightful and I found some great stuff. The book selection is really great, there's something for everyone!

This is such a unique bookstore! The owners were so friendly and loved talking and geeking out over books with me! They had so many great popular used copies as well as some unique finds and vintage and special editions. The owner showed us a book she has from 1603 - it was fascinating! Also, she got an arc copy of a pop up book that was missing colors - so fun! We will definitely be back again! :)

Backstory is an absolute hidden gem in portland. Great range of used books and discounted yarn/crafts equipment. The staff are always super friendly, and the store has a pleasant, homey vibe. 10/10!

Delighted to find this enchanting bookstore and yarn haven. Backstory is in a beautiful whimsy building with wall to wall books covering a large variety of genres. You can find everything from cookbooks to creepy fiction. They also carry a lot of classic children's books. There is yarn in every color of the rainbow. I even got a chance to check out a vintage sewing machine. Backstory is a wonderful place to explore used books and get craft inspiration. Put it on your "must go" list if you love the smell of old books and enjoy touching different yarn textures. It was a lovely place to spend a quiet Sunday afternoon.

My wife saw "Books and Yarn" and it instantly became a mandatory destination on our trip to Portland. The place is really funky, in a good way. Book are 'everywhere' but its still pretty organized. The clerk was very helpful and we spent way too much money there. But we are glad to support independent businesses. Good quality yarn and there are also little items that are great for gifts.

My absolute favorite book store in Portland. The owners are awesome, the books are priced great, and they specifically have a large and varied collection of Black literature. Highly recommend!!! half of my book collection is from them!
