“I've been hearing about this place for a while, so finally decided to check it out last weekend. It did not disappoint! It was a lot of fun going through the different rooms, and I love that a lot of the installations are interactive. It was a great sensory experience and a fantastic opportunity to let your inner child come out and play!”

“It's like a little museum! It's a great place for cautious naturalists, as sustainability is part of their mission statement. Prices are honestly not bad, and the selection is always changing. Also a great place for rare and carnivorous plants. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Either location is a Portland must-see, in my opinion!”

“My wife and I were in town celebrating her 60th birthday and Bailey was kind enough to arrange a class for us as a present for her. What a fantastic experience! We can’t wait to come back and do it again!”

“I assume that I will love this place. Toth, the master, declares that the Age of Aquarius is upon us, and every man, woman, and indeed everyone else, we are all a STAR. THANK YOU.”

“We were greeted by the owners as we came in and the merchandise was beautiful....we purchased a necklace and we couldn't be happier!! Great little local shop”

“This place is rad. We bring all of our friends and family here when they come to visit. It's always one stop amongst the Portland weird and it feels like a staple to us and our circle at this point.

There is a lot of taxidermy and that may not be up everyone's alley, but even so there is plenty of art adjacent or diagonal to that space that you just are not aware of.

They have partnered up with several artists that they have in that shop that do incredibly interesting things with their displays. I'm being cautious not to give you much away and being intentionally vague.

They also have geodes you can buy and break, other minerals, plants, and other gifts.

I think it's a very special place to visit.”

“I ordered two frames plus the stretch for two 30”x40” oil paintings on Canvas. The framing was done exceptionally well. They are honest and tell you the estimate in non-rushed personal face-to-face meeting. They are a small business with personalized service. The best of all is that their price was lower than a competitor nearby. I will go their again for sure!”

“I’ve been going to Al for my hair for many years now- I followed her here when she left her old employment years ago. She’s kind, and just the right amount of personable!

She cuts hair so well, but especially does color well. Everything I get done grows out so well (I live an hour away so I don’t come often), the cuts and color! Sometimes I use a reference photo, but most of the time I don’t and she nails it.”

“I just love this little bookstore! Their space may be small, but their selection is *so* well-curated—I make a point to visit when I’m in the area and am always able to find something interesting. Highly recommended!”

“Many years ago I used to provide HR consultation to them. I still think about this company and it brilliance. There were the most spectacular and stunning pictures from Nepal in their gorgeous space. The rugs they had in the studio could only be described in my dreams, absolute decadence!”

“This was my first time visiting the artisans who have creative spaces in this building. It was their holiday open market. There was so much talent and great finds from local artists. I am looking forward to their next open studio event.”

“Had no idea this existed until we randomly walked by it. Such a cool store! The books that the owner carefully selects are outstanding and space is fun. Highly recommend.”

“This is such a cute and quaint gallery that features all local artists. Artwork rotates monthly and they even teach classes for kids and adults! All experience levels are welcome and you sign up for classes on their website.”

“The Guardino Gallery is one of the original galleries where Alberta got the Alberta Arts District from. This shop helped build Alberta Street to what it is today, and we thank you. This gallery incorporates multiple store fronts, has lots and lots of fantastic local art, which rotates about every month, so you keep going back to find that piece your house is missing. Keep a look out for one of their many openings where they showcase individual artists or show up for Last Thursday and see a collection by many, which is usually the case.”

“Joshua and Charlie and their collection are amazing. It’s hard not to bankrupt myself when I visit their gallery. I can’t thank them enough for the treasures I have purchased from them. Their love for art bleeds into the world and makes it a better place.”

“Beverly and her staff are incredibly knowledgeable about Pacific NW art and this gallery is a fun place to visit. If you want to learn about who all the important artists are in Oregon and Washington and also want to see a (non gallery like) huge collection of local art in all price ranges, this is the place to go!”

“If high-quality, beautiful framing to complement fine art prints is what you seek, this is the place to go.There are lots of handmade and unusual options, and it’s truly remarkable how the framing here can enhance an already beautiful piece of work. You may pay more here than elsewhere in town, but for fine art that really deserves the boutique treatment, Katayama is my go-to.”

“Ok, I really liked this, it was on my list for some time, so while in town, we gave it a shot. I will say the entrance fee of 10 dollars seems a little steep after having done it. But it isn't unreasonable. You do get lots of photo ops and free popcorn, so I can't complain too much. Nice little gift shop, got a mystery bag and it has a picture for a slide machine from 1951, a weird picture of someone's baby from like the 1800's, some stickers, and a McDonald's minion. Definitely peculiar! I'd say that was worth it for five dollars”

“Putting Our Minds Together Review

[Part 3]
"Ja'" (water in Yucatec Mayan) by Patricia Vázquez Gómez is an immersive listening space filled with the voices of a group of Mayan youth residing in Portland, Oregon. This piece illustrates the idea of "language power," showing how language can create unique knowledge and connections, it is a work that makes the presence of the Yucatec Mayan language and their sounds in this land noticeable and recognizable, often overlooked by many. Themes of opacity and decolonization resonate within this site-specific sound piece, emphasizing the ability to create knowledge not just through another language, but also through alternative forms of expression such as a choir. The darkness and the organic overlay of sounds and words from various directions stir our imagination, allowing us to hear a glimpse of Yucatec Mayan. This idea aligns with our term's discussions on knowledge outside Western paradigms, highlighting the importance of diverse linguistic and cultural perspectives in shaping our understanding of the world.
As we observed in this exhibition, not all the pieces can fit into the ideas that we discussed in class, just as not all the pieces fit even into the idea of the Biennial: “ablaze with our care, its ongoing song.” Throughout this term we have discussed and learned how these ideas are a process rather than an end, a process that we must (and have put into practice in this exercise) in practice day by day. At the end of the day as Slushy Points —a concept developed by Bayo Akomolafe in Black Lives Matter, But To Whom?— explains, we are the result of the conditions within us and it is what we do with it that counts/matters. This class is just a starting point and this visit is just one more voice in the sea of possibilities that critical theories offer.”

“Great prices and widespread collection of new and old. Just started collecting vinyls this year and have been to numerous stores in PDX. This one is by far the best in terms of pricing.”

“There are 2 locations on Alberta, so double check before you head out. We were looking for the show at the other location (on 11th?).Anyways, this location had a fabulous show, which I was a bit more partial to. We picked up a print from the show -AND- a print I'd only seen randomly on the Internet! The store guy (sorry I forgot your name) checked the other location for the piece my husband specifically came to find. Unfortunately, it had sold out.If you are a local artist, this is a beautiful space for a showing (giant courtyard). If you are looking for a fun art piece, this is a great starting point. If you are looking for a gift/card/special item, there are lots of local artists represented. I even saw Miffy the Bunny merch. I haven't seen any of her things in AGES!Excited to come back (and to the other location) next time we are in Portland.”

“I came in hoping to get quotes to get something framed in time for Christmas. Adam the owner from the moment I opened the door was kind, patient, asked great questions and helped me through the process. His attention to detail and expert eye for color made the experience seamless. It is because of his fair prices and expert advice that he got two things to frame instead of one and I will be a repeat customer again in the new year.”

“My favorite art gallery in Portland. Every artist in the gallery had something I would take home if I could afford it. Pepe is very passionate about the art and I really like his work. Highly recommended!”

“Wonderful connection with Laura! Very, very fortunate to literally stumble into her gallery. Found one of her featured artists “Kirk Weller” paintings to speak to me, but had to settle for one! […for now!] Every weekend should include a conversation with someone as passionate about her business & the art world such as Laura!”

“A true gem of a shop full of folk art, unique vintage, and contemporary artists work you can’t find elsewhere. There’s a back story for every piece that the owner selects and it’s all so thoughtfully put together. Highly recommend?”

“This gallery is a breath of fresh air. Some of the artists were hanging out and they were so welcoming and made it a fun experience to browse all of the beautiful art. If you're looking for some accessible local art in a gallery that isn't stuffy, this is a good place to look.”

“They did a very nice job remounting and replacing the broken glass on a framed photo, including offering to replace the glass for free with a remnant piece. It looks much better now! Note that the shop is closed from 11:45-1:00 for lunch every day. Please update your hours on the website.”
