I shopped here about 10 times. I LOVE the small town feel it has. I’ve seen reviews about it being slow or “chatting” too much. I guess always being in a hurry is just who we are as humans now. And it’s sad. Take the time to breathe yall! Meet your neighbors! I learned after this was my favorite store that my favorite customer at my own job is the owner. Norman is fantastic! He can make you laugh or give you the best life advice or just listen to your bad day and he always manages to just make it better. I really hope this store stays in our neighborhood, and I hope it stays just as it is.Thank you so much to Norman and all employees here!

I live in an apartment nearby this store. I hadn't gone in despite living in the area for over a year due to my personal schedule overlapping with their hours of operation. For months I have been looking for a very specific and hard to find bulb replacement. Unfortunately the only place I could find a replacement was on Amazon online. Today, I went into the store and looked over their bulbs..... It wasn't there. The person at the front told me to go to the second counter for any assistance that I should need so I took a gamble. At the second counter, the person looked at the bulb I had brought and immediately knew not only whether they had it in stock (which they did not) but they gave me not one, but three different in town locations that would carry a replacement. While this is not a specialty store, they have specialty knowledge and the intention to deliver a one on one catered experience. For any additional household repairs and needs in the future, I know they will provide solutions to all situations. I will absolutely be going back.Very grateful to have a business like this in the neighborhood.

The good news is that they have anything you would need. The people who work there are very knowledgeable. The bad news is that their process is the slowest that I have ever scene. If you get there and there are 0-2 people ahead of you you will be there for 20-30 minutes. Chatting takes precedence. The owner was telling me they had 70 people in line the other day. taking 3 hours to get to the last person. That’s because he chats and takes phone calls and chats with them. i only go there when I have to and plan on 30-60 minutes…even if I am just buying one thing.

This store seems like it has history and people with a lot of experience. Unfortunately their business administration side is using antiquated and relatively inefficient means to sell goods. As a result purchases can take a lot longer than they should. Relative to the even the lower outliers, it is not in line with today's standards. This coupled with a proclivity towards personalized chats with customers, narrow / saturated spaces, can make for an uncomfortable experience any time they are even slightly busy. The few workers are clearly knowledgeable, very opinionated, and overworked due to the inefficient setup. The stress frequently shows in conversation. To run a credit card payment for example takes 30 times longer, because they generate invoices and copy over credit card stuff manually, and drag redundancies over from different terminals/counters for a single transaction. There seems like there is some potential to multiply their existing success from a logistics & business administration contractor. I would probably make this a go to over other hardware stores. Otherwise this would be good for an older retiree who would enjoy personal chat, nostalgic hardware atmosphere, and to form a personal relationship with the workers or owners. I could not recommend this place for someone who is on a schedule or with a lot of responsibilities.

If you're nostalgic for the way things were...or curious about how they should be...this is the place for you. This place IS the Willy Wonka's of hardware--and I was transformed into the kid in a candy shop. This can't man can. I ended up here on a whim after spending the better part of two days driving from place to place looking for someone who had, and would sell, a pressure switch for my furnace. Spoiler alert--they did. The price was beyond reasonable and the help was divine. If it sounds like I'm going overboard that's because I am. I was so impressed by the selection, the truly knowledgeable help, and the other inventory that I couldn't help but say something. He explained they carry more than 35,000 unique items and I'm not surprised one bit. have miles of warehouse shelves, and that maintaining this brilliant inventory is the crowning achievement for its owner. Whoever that person is, I asked that my thanks be shared. Ankeny Hardware is the opposite of a box store, no self checkout, no marketing, no neatly arranged and well-faced aisles--it is eclectic, crammed full, and marvelous. The help made sure I had the right part and understood how it works--made sure it was the answer to my problem...he wrote the receipt by hand, and walked me to the card machine. Every place I looked there was something I'd spent days or weeks trying to find many times before--and the stuff was all quality. I can't say enough about this place. It should be the first place anyone looks--or the last place if they're tired of looking. A true independent treasure that I'm excited to recommend.

The owner is dishonest and treats customer badly. He just wants to make money by price gauging the customers. I recently brought some electrical parts which I learned later I had over paid. I would not recommend anyone to buy from this store.

The owner of this store doesn't care about his customers AT ALL. I waited in line for over 30 mins while the owner was shoveling hot dogs into his mouth!! I counted 19 HOT DOGS before I left the store. The stench of hotdog water permeated the whole store and was absolutely foul. I guess he would rather guzzle glizzys than run a business??
