The care was fine and we liked that it's in our community. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend this clinic. I had a VERY serious crisis to deal with, when I called to see about coming in later or rescheduling the receptionist was rude, dismissive and tried to charge me for missing a visit. Apparently the staff here don't care about humans the way they do money. Disappointed to say the least

I called to simply ask for an estimate of fees to spay my 5 pound dog and they refused to even give me a range of what the fees might be before we had come in and paid a 70$ exam fee!!! This is a VERY POOR BUSINESS ACUMEN!! And very poor customer service!! So we opted to go to Tillamook Veterinary Hospital because they were courteous and took the time to go through all possible fees before scheduling the appointment.

We have four pugs and started transitioning our kids to Pioneer about a year ago and we could not be happier. They really take the time to listen to what we are observing in our dogs, they are always willing to let us add some care for our dogs that is not what I would consider the norm. We take our old man who is severely arthritic and has seizures to another vet for acupuncture and laser treatments. The only downside for us is that we live in Beaverton and the commute can be a little pain in the bum every now and again, but with the quality care and peace of mind we get...it's worth it!!

My dog became sick several weeks ago. We took him to Pioneer Animal Hospital (our vet through several animals over 15 years) and they diagnosed him with parasite (well, one of two - one being super serious, one being completely normal). $350 later, we had antibiotics and a game plan. Unfortunately, things did not get better and our dog continued to get sicker - to the point of losing many pounds over 12 days and no longer eating or going to the bathroom (aside from watery diarrhea). I was asked to bring him for observation and did so on Tuesday, the 27th. They caged my dog up from 8:30 in the morning until 3:30 in the afternoon when my husband had to go and help get him out of the crate because they were unable to. Each time he has come in, they act afraid of him (he is a husky/shepherd mix)... which doesn't help his nervousness. Our pup was terrified. We were quoted $781 around noon to run blood work, a fecal study and x-rays (which also included sedation). I gave approval over the phone for that amount. My husband then sat at the clinic for almost 3 hours while they ran their battery of tests... blood work, fecal study and x-ray. The only thing said to him is that the quote would be a little higher because they needed extra sedatives for our dog. When he got the bill, it was $1,100, $300+ more than originally quoted. To be honest, I was upset with this increase, but figured my husband must have approved it because they always ask for approval before treatments in the past. Only, this time they didn't. He was handed a bill and sent on his way. We had some concerns about his appointment, so I contacted the office and was directed to the office manager. She repeatedly told me that my husband verbally approved the additional amounts when the doctor discussed them with him. Funny thing was, he didn't see the doctor until AFTER everything was already done (she finally came in after x-rays we're done, he'd only talked to the vet tech, and discussion of charges had not been had). I had asked for some clarification on items from his bill (because maybe that would answer our questions about the higher bill)... and those questions were ignored. Finally, we never received results from his fecal study, even after I emailed the office manager and requested it. They just said it looked like his parasite was gone. (Having met with a new vet today, we are now back to treating him for the same parasite he was originally treated for because it does not sound like it is gone. Also, the new vet charged us their normal rates, which was $200 less than what we paid at Pioneer Animal Hospital - with the medication.) I'm sharing this to just let people be aware that the quality of care from Pioneer Animal Hospital has gone down hill substantially. They are not only incredibly expensive for their services, but they won't give you results of the tests they have charged you for. And they will charge you without discussing prices, even if you've indicated you want to know all charges up front. Then lie and say they had verbal consent. I have emailed with the office manager a couple times, asking questions... only to get vague responses, with no real answers. The sad part is we have been with this vet for 15 years and through several pets... and are sad to have to leave, but I don't want to just be nickel and dimed and have no real answers.

Dr. Basham is so very kind and incredibly professional. I have been dealing with an aggressive behavioral situation with one of my 4 dogs for a few years and this past weekend was the worst situation yet. Dr. Basham was so tender with me, understanding the idea of surrendering him was heart breaking for me, she took the time to professionally explain AGAIN "I cap because she's done it so many times already", why it's the best solution for not only the aggressive one but the other 3 who reside in the stress. Additionally she reassured me that we did all we could as owners and sadly this happens from time to time. I am beyond thankful for her and the way she handled my situation with genuine sincerity.

I've been to most of the vets in the clackamas area I'd highly recommend this one over others. They're currently only seeing new patients in between their regular appointments and even then the vet really took the time to go over everything with me and make sure all our issues were addressed and taken care of. They even sent us home with this new puppy kit that had a lot of really great info and a sample of the flea and heartworm medicine they recommend.

Reliable, professional yet also personal and sensitive to your and your pet's needs. We were referred to Pioneer by a friend and are SO happy they did! A very wide area of expertise and knowledge, yet they aren't afraid to admit when they don't have an answer and need to do some further invetstigation. They will listen to your questions and also your suggestions without making you feel foolish about it. The very best!

Kind and responsive staff who often go above and beyond to help. Have always taken good care of my pups. Dr. Basham is a welcome addition to the team.

So I had appointments in May for my 2 dogs- annual exams, shots, etc. The yearly full check-up and vaccinations. Then in June, days before going out of town and boarding them, I try to get a refill of heart worm and also flea/ tick meds. They respond that the dogs are overdue for their heart worm tests, and they won't refill the meds until the tests happen. I wonder why they didn't do them when we were there in May, or notify me or anything. Then I ask for just the flea and tick meds immediately, so they could be boarded, and said I'd do the heart worm test and get those meds in a few days when I was back. They agree-- because of course the heart worm test would only delay the heart worm meds (though they had not said anything previously about giving the flea and tick med- had just said I couldn't get meds for the dogs). Several more calls every about 3 hours to ask if the prescription is in yet, having to reexplain each time. Costco pharmacy where I get my dog meds even re-sent the refill request, writing "urgent" on it. Nope. They said each time I called (at least 5-6 times over the few days, plus the messages from Costco) and told them it was urgent, that they'd send it "soon". They did not send it at all. So about a week later, the front desk calls and leaves me a message that they were looking through their records and noticed that somehow I did not get the reminder that my dogs were due for their heart worm tests. They then offered the tests free. There was zero mention of the multiple phone calls and their failure to get the flea and tick meds to me. I passed on free tests and switched vets. I did like the vets there well enough when I saw them- though after 40 years of dogs, I had less contact with these vets than any other vet clinic I've used. My new vet has already personally followed up with me several times- checking on the dogs- which never happened at Pioneer. There are better vet clinics around.

We have a high maintenance high energy dog and they are so kind and gentle with him. We don't live close by anymore but drive here for the expertise, reasonable price and straight forward recommendations.

We used to be very happy there, but not sure what is going on. It is absolute incompetence now. We have been trying for over a week to get a simple allergy medication for our dog and this vet claims that they never received anything from Walgreens requesting it, that they never received any phone calls requesting it, and that they had no idea what medication the dog was on. Now our dog is vomiting, most likely from withdrawals. I just called Pioneer and I was made to wait almost 5 minutes because they didn't couldn't find the medication in her chart (the dog has only been on it a year). The lady then got back on the phone with an attitude and asked me what medication it was even though I just told them 5 minutes ago. What was she doing all that time? The lady even started arguing with me that I never told her the name of the medication (the purpose of the call). We will never come back. No pet should suffer because of this incompetence.

I love the vets and vet techs here. They do have higher prices but that is because they are AAHA accredited. Look it up, it means they meet higher standards for care than most other vet clinics. These folks truly care for pets. My cats have had top notch, fast and compassionate care over the years. Do your pets and yourself a favor and give them better care. You get what you pay for here.
