Roberta ( Bert) And Kathy have been at this place for many, many years. They know their jobs well. The new owner, Jasmine is great. The others who work there are friendly and competent. Can't wait until they are back on Main street. In their old spot .

This isn't a reflection of the brand's new ownership or whatever form this business takes after it is rebuilt. This is strictly an assessment of the Pharmacy and Fountain as it existed before the Weil Arcade fire. In some nursing homes and assisted living facilities, the staff set up an environment that resembles the one that residents knew when they were younger. Appliances, furniture and fixtures date from the 1950s through 1970s, the music piped into the rooms is from the same era and the shows on the retrofitted television screens and the news on reprinted papers is from that time. While the stewards of these facilities found that such environments had a comforting effect on the residents, they resulted in detrimental behavior toward staff who didn't look like "people from the neighborhood" and an overall uptick in both racism toward workers and sexism toward staff and fellow residents alike. It turns out that when you try to comfort people by keeping them in the past, they bring many of the past's issues with them. That was the Hillsboro Pharmacy and Fountain. A modest replica of the original that occupied the northeast corner of 2nd and Main, the Pharmacy and Fountain next to the Weil Arcade featured a store teeming with puzzles, gifts and games that seemingly hadn't been restocked since the first Bush era. The pharmacy itself sat behind a latticework counter and served an increasingly aging population of North Hillsboro denizens and legacy townspeople who could recount just how many generations had lived in town (and how they didn't understand why people were up in arms about their blackface drama-club photos from high school). These same regulars would line the Pharmacy's "soda fountain," which was basically a luncheonette with a flat-top grill, a selection of beverages and a host of Hershey's ice cream varieties trucked across the better part of the U.S. All of the bland, inoffensive diner fare of the early 20th Century was accounted for, and regulars' photos and obituaries were added to the walls as seats opened up. For all that Hillsboro loves to discuss "progress" and its role as the biggest tree in Oregon's "Silicon Forest" (an awfully flat expanse of steam-belching stacks stretching from Cornelius Pass to 25th Street), this is where the city's path forward generally stalled in its tracks. This is where downtown landlords lamented that they couldn't get Starbucks or bank money for commercial properties they'd sooner leave fallow. This is where third-generation farm scions would scan land prices and grouse about being inside the Rural Reserve and actually having to farm the land they owned. This is where the professionals who were once the only game in town scowled at OHSU and Kaiser while writing screeds denying both evolution and election results. This is where a certain class of Hillsboro residents wished for things to be "like they used to be," but hastened to cash in on how things are now. Much like many of the longer-tenured downtown businesses, the Pharmacy and Fountain's clientele had a fairly homogenous makeup to it that was reaching the end of its shelf life. As many of the issues discussed within those now soot-stained walls permeate the town's political discourse--with the Old Guard looking to sell the farm to the highest tech bidder, keep the books and people they don't like out of schools and get a nice, big baseball stadium for them and 800 of their closest friends--downtown takes on a different look and feel in its absence. The businesses that have moved in just before the pandemic and onward attract a younger, more diverse clientele. Their windows--even those of establishments once thought to be cornerstones of Old Hillsboro--bear signs supporting the communities the curmudgeons maligned or overlooked entirely. The big draws here aren't a downsized air show or an overfunded minor league ball club, but bustling weekend and Tuesday Night markets, a regularly pac

Went there earlier today in hopes of getting one of the amazing shakes and malts, but there was no food service, it's strictly just a pharmacy now

Absolutely adorable! The authentic lunch counter, complete with stools, Coca Cola signs, great burgers and fries. And genuine hand made milkshakes and malteds too. You don't see those around any more. Cute little kitschy items some rather unique. Just few blocks from the train station and next to the lovely park. Take a lovely walk around town, but most of all at least enjoy a shake, You'll be glad you did !

A local pharmacy that I feel is a staple of downtown life. I am so lucky to have grown up being able to go here, even in 2021. It's one of a kind and also one of the last few "Fountains" left. This little place has so much history etched into its walls. They have delicious ice cream and a classic vibe. It's the type of joint you could go to share a milkshake with your lover, just like in the movies. :) I hope they never leave our town.

Been going to Hillsboro Pharmacy pretty much my entire life and consider this place one of the best places to grab a fountain drink and a fun lunch.
