I have used Peterson for the last 4 years of tax returns, and I will never use them again.
The first year, things went well and I was genuinely impressed. They had done a previous year's tax return I was woefully behind on, and the following year's tax return with accuracy and in a great timeframe. I thought I had found the tax preparation solution that would make my life a breeze.
The next year I returned with that year's tax documents. It was a relatively simple return, two states and one federal return. This time they did not include more than one discount, which I did not notice at the time. About a week after I signed to have my return submitted to the IRS the manager had contacted me to let me know they missed the discounts. Not a huge deal, things happen and they refunded the discount totals to my bank account.
This year was a series of failures, ending just in the last week. I brought in my documents towards the end of the season, about five weeks before tax day. There was a lead time before they had the chance to look at the return which I expected, and accepted, although I had to call three times on separate days before I was able to speak with someone to get this info (not informed during document drop off). Once my documents were reviewed, it was a complex return for both myself and my wife, there were a few more pieces of info that were needed to complete the return for maximum value. I sent in the info requested by the preparer in about five days and the return was ready to send in once signatures were completed in person and scheduled the day before Tax Day. My wife and I signed, paid, and Peterson e-filed the return same day.
It was expected that the state and Fed would take about 2-4 weeks before processing the return and the payment would be an additional week or so. After 2 weeks, I used the online Oregon status function to check on my return. The website simply stated that our return had not been received, the same was shown on the IRS site. I figured this was just typical government not updating their systems in a timely manner and waited another week. I checked again and same thing.
At this point I reached out to Peterson and asked for an update on return status. I was told they would check into it and call me back the same day. I called again two days later, less than enthused by the lack of communication, and was told they would get back to me ASAP. They called me a few hours later to inform me that the return had be denied due to missing tax pins the same day we had e-filed. Why I was not informed of this at any point in the previous 4 weeks? I was extremely unimpressed by this stage and simply wanted to get my money from the government and move on with my life. I quickly got the needed tax pins to Peterson and about 2 weeks later I had seen the return funds from the state in my account, so at least there wasn't anything else they messed up.
Flash forward to this week and I received a manilla envelope from Peterson that I was not expecting. Inside the envelope is a document, one that I should have received with all of my other documents when I signed and paid several hundred dollars for services. This document was my child's original birth certificate, newborn footprint and all. While I am thankful Peterson returned this to us, I am beyond furious and will never return to Peterson Tax or recommend them to even my worst enemy. I am disappointed that I have wasted $700+ dollars on second chances with this company this last year.

Peterson Tax has felt like a member of the family since I started my business. Vickie and Holly met with me multiple times to answer my questions and ensure I was going about setting up my business properly with the appropriate licensing etc. Now over 10 years later, I have worked with most everyone on their team and appreciate each of them. Peterson Tax will always be the only place I trust for all of my tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll needs. They are open and available all year not just during tax season. Which is another reason I will continue to refer friends, family and customers for years to come. Thank you ladies!

Honestly I have never worked with a more dysfunctional, unprofessional company. There were several things that contributed to my negative experience, but I was willing to overlook them and move on with my life until I opened my Google Sheets doc today to see that Carol, the tax agent I worked with, had gone into my original master document and had altered it while she was going through tracking my expenses.Well, in the process of doing so, she also deleted over $1300 worth of 2022 expenses that I had tracked along with the 2021 expenses she was dealing with. Luckily I was able to figure out how to go back and restore to the previous version before she altered it, because otherwise I would have had no way of finding those expenses again. This is my only document that tracks my business expenses. I guess it's my fault for adding her as an "editor" when I shared the file, instead of "view only," but I honestly would have never assumed in a million years that a "professional" would go in and delete or alter a client's records instead of making a copy of the document first. When I had my initial appointment, Carol asked me some clarifying questions about the documents I brought, which was expected, but since she didn't bother to write any notes about what I said, she then had to call and text me several times throughout the next couple of days to have me reiterate what I had already told her several times in-person. Then after rescheduling me twice, she no-call, no-showed to my follow-up appointment. I'm not sure exactly how late she was, because I left after waiting 20 minutes for her to show up.When her coworker (Maybe receptionist? I had never seen or met her before) came outside to let me know that Maria would be another 10-15 minutes late after I had already waited 15 min, I asked her to return some documents that I had provided at my prior appointment, assuming she would gather and prepare them and then mail them to me.Instead, she proceeded to go inside, procure copies of my tax documents, which include my Social Security number, and give them to me without ever having met me before or bothering to check any form of identification. I could have been literally anyone. This woman just gave my Social Security number and official tax documents to a person she'd never met sitting in a car in the parking lot. That is 100% unacceptable and is probably illegal.I left and filed with TurboTax.As a young business owner, I am used to being underestimated, but I am not used to being disregarded and disrespected. It is obvious that the agent didn't respect me or value my time as a professional and I highly recommend that you go to another business for your tax prep needs.

CLIENTS BEWARE!!! I have never experienced such HORRIBLE and UNPROFESSIONAL customer service in my life. Holly agreed to do our taxes early February of this year. I dropped off all our paperwork to their office on February 14th, 2020. I would periodically check in with her via email and phone to make sure she was still ON TRACK and able to complete everything by the deadline of July 15th. All I got during that time were a total of TWO email responses from her saying YES she can still do the service. She kept saying she would call me back, but never did - I got a full VM box every time I called. 5 months went by with the July 15th deadline approaching and I am reaching out, no response. I get a call from her secretary today (July 16th) saying that Holly is overwhelmed by our taxes and that we need to find another accountant. We are now faced with a HUGE fine/penalty because she took on work that she refused to complete. PLEASE STOP TAKING ON WORK THAT YOU HAVE NO INTENTION OF COMPLETING - and learn to communicate with clients.

Our experience with Peterson Tax Service was extremely positive. It was easy to see that not all tax preparers are created equal. The difference comes down to the end result. If you walk away after the process with the confidence that every aspect of your personal situation, in regards to taxes, was thoroughly reviewed and analyzed to determine the final outcome, it translates into a feeling of accomplishment. If the new tax laws are presented to you in a manner that is clear and concise, accompanied by checking for understanding, you feel an appreciation for the ‘teaching moment’ that benefits you in future endeavors. If you are greeted warmly with a caring attitude and a genuine persona that exudes extreme confidence in their chosen profession, it’s another mark on the checklist. Strength of character is the final criteria in our book, and perhaps the most crucial. Needless to say, all roads lead to Holly. Thank you for the wonderful experience!
