“It's not often in the course of visiting clothing shops for men that a shop earns the title "Gentlemen's outfitter". This vestigial artifact of a phrase from a bygone era is testament to the movement of fashion over the past two hundred years. Department stores having swept the United States clean of them, in favor of a more family oriented approach.
In the years gone by a gentleman's outfitter was a store meant to outfit not only men's clothing, but to provide an experience and variety of other useful trinkets and "sundries" that a man should need in his personal life, hobbies and entertainment. It goes without saying that such stores in the United States disappeared around the 1950's with the long coat, and fedora hats, with trench coats, and gloves. The movement persevered however in Europe and to this day several outfitters still exist, primarily in Britain, but with some presence on the mainland countries.
America however has a dearth of these and as such they've disappeared almost entirely from American consciousness with the exception of those who've traveled to them, or look at them from the lens of older history accounts/fashions. They are a mystical land of higher end men's tailoring, large selection, and a variety of other useful bits and bobs to the everyday joe. Sometimes going as far as to outfit expeditions to Africa, Antarctica, and the further reaches of the planet, as most importantly, all outfitters by their very nature are practical implements, with forays into quality and sometimes superfluous clothing for the evening out.
Porterhouse Clothing is a Gentlemen's outfitters. Not just mimicking one, it simply is one; from the experience walking into the small building that it shares with a book store, to the variety of smaller trinkets available and "sundries" as they call them. There is no equivalent on the West coast of the United States, and its closest competition could safely be found in Manhattan.
I myself had the pleasure of visiting the store the 21st of July 2024, and was met by Omar who immediately began to discuss with me, (after a short compliment on my dress that day) the origins of Porterhouse. I confirmed with him that no such equivalent store had been on my radar since I'd visiting "Kormakur & Skjoldur" in Reykjavik, Iceland; safely half-way across the planet.
He showed me around the store, and we spoke about the quality of tailoring and how they work hard to ensure that the clothing in store is of high quality. There was no debating that on my end, I was impressed. Having purchased a sweater and matching beanie cap in Loden color from Dehen 1920 a local clothing producer in Portland.
At all stages Omar was wonderful, walking me through the store, making suggestions, and demonstrating an impressive knowledge that is nearly impossible to find in the United States for this sort of clothing. I only wish we could have spoken for an additional several hours, but he had a business to run, and I had a place to be. Eugene, Oregon can only be shown to be spoiled with even the small square footage allotted to this merchant.
If someone wants quality (the price will reflect that) male clothing that will last a lifetime, you can't do better on this side of the United States. There is no doubt that should my travels once again take me to Eugene, I will stop in to chat with Omar about the latest and greatest in store. Thank you again!”
“Jaime and Courtney were SO kind and patient while we shopped! They didn't make me feel ashamed or out of place for needing to order my clothes online (which is always nice as a plus size person) and placed the order for me. They made it so quick and easy. One of the employees even took a moment to be excited with me over finding an enamel pin that looked just like my own cat. You guys were awesome, thank you!! ❤️”
“Awesome little shop, fun to browse and wander through. Definitely some real Eugene flavor. You'll find there are many unique treasures to discover. Great if you're looking for a gift, or just a little something for yourself. Many affordable items even if you haven't got much to spend. There's something here for everyone. Conveniently located downtown; I like to visit RAVENS if I'm waiting for a bus or train and I have some time to kill. This place is magic.”

“Gave me a free mountain dew when i accidentally took a diet one. This is fantastic as I cannot stand aspartame and it would've ruined my day. Thank you Duck Store for saving my day.”
“Excellent customer service ? ?. Very attentive and helpful ?. Bought a new pair of Nike SB high top skate shoes. Lots of cool ? stuff whether you Skateboard or not. I quit when I was 41, but still love ❤️ it. Skate on!”
“Awesome store! 10/10 staff I talked too and extremely helpful and got everything going! Only a little too fast cause I got home (2 hours away) and found a alarm tag on my shirt”
“The guys working when we went in today were awesome and helped get our dressing room. Good selection of clothes that are higher end and not cheap. Definitely will be back”
“They have really nice gear and apparel, cool knick knacks and other various items. Prices are a little crazy, but it’s worth it if you find something you really like.”

“Usually, Macy's is a bad experience. No help in sight, can't find my size, cheaply made clothes mixed with some quality. An ocean of stuff with no signs or clues to help a girl navigate. I hate it.
But my last visit was to the Clarins counter, where I got perfect help, honest feedback, useful tips, human courtesy, and fast service to get me out the door.”
“I ordered two pairs of jeans online but they were the wrong size. So I decided to go into the store to see if they had them in stock there. Unfortunately they didn't, but the employee who helped me, named Em, was so incredibly helpful! The caliber of customer service she gave made me feel like was in a very high-end store with a personal shopper! She asked if I wanted her to do the exchange online for me, or find something in the store. I was tempted to try to find something in store for instant gratification, and she asked me all the questions needed to find what I was looking for. She hit it spot on, but I decided to still stick with the originals and she seamlessly reordered them for me and even asked about the length because I had previously been thinking I might like the short length instead.
Em is one amazing team member of yours! :)”

“Veronica was a wonderful cashier/associate!!! Kindness can go a long way (in just about every situation) and really matters. She was super nice and helped me with a confusing return/purchase. I have had really bad experiences at Valley River Center AE store in the past. AE needs more Veronica's or have her train other AE employees. She made me decide to return to the store after i was considering not coming back because of a prior bad experience at this store.”
“I need a shirt and pants for our wedding. I also need them tailored. A sales associate took the time to make sure I had all the contact info for an Alterations Service and gave me a hand written note with email, physical address, phone number and let me know to make an appt first. Thank you. Excellent Customer Service. I appreciate you.”

“Always nice and helpful employees and managers. The sales could be more easy to identify. I always end up with things that are miss marked. Confusing sale signs make you assume that you are purchasing sale items when you are not. But that is not the employee's fault. They are lovely!!!”
“I came in today and was greeted by a lovely smiling young lady by the name of Bre who was very helpful and attentive. She was very helpful and I will definitely be a return customer! Awesome little store! Thank you PacSun”
“Abbey was the goat. Not only did she gaslight my friend twice into getting different sized socks but we all laughed at him as well. 10/10 experience would absolutely do it again. Should be employee of the month”
“Helped me get a custom shirt to fit me perfectly - they got my measurements, got my very crisp & wrinkle-free white button up, and I was out in less than 20 miniatures.”
“Our experience was amazing! We came in close to closing time and the owner was very polite, offering us to stay as long as we needed. She was very warm, welcoming, and helpful with finding us what we needed. The store is gorgeous and everything is well chosen. Definitely going back!”
