I don't know why would anyone want to camp here: 1) bathrooms are so stinky and so dirty, you can smell stinky from 30-50 ft away. 2) After you unload you camping gears, they make you park your vehicle more than 1 mile away, that is so ridiculous. 3) There is no internet service there, not even Verizon. If there is a fire or in emergency situation, you can't contact your loved ones or police or Ambulance.I camped there once, and I swear I would never want to camp there ever again. They don't deserve even 1 star. I would give it less if I could.

Coming here late in he 2023 season, I had a great time. We were lucky enough to be blessed with good weather all but one day, which is not a guarantee, but you cannot really pin bad weather on the camp. It is where it is and, generally, it's a great spot. The beach views were fantastic, and if you go during free time you are really very much free to do whatever you want on the beach. Merit badge offerings are a little sparse, and scouts are not likely to earn many here, but they will have a lot of fun. Unfortunately for older scouts, their are few non-merit badge activities offered during merit badge hours, like there are at other camps like Melita Island in Montana (their ACE program is superb,) but there are still plenty of opportunities for older scouts to have fun during merit badge time, such as taking a walk on the beach. Our food was generally of a superior quality compared to other boy scout summer camps, and there were even some meals worth remembering and even getting thirds for.Merriwrther has the most entertaining staff dunk I have ever seen, a frequent end-of-week summer camp activity, and it was very entertaining.Generally, Merriwrther has plentiful opportunities for entertainment during free time and unparalleled natural beauty if you like the ocean, like me.Unfortunately, not all was perfect here, for example, a large portion of the staff was very sick, which was never mentioned to us, leading our troop to wonder why we never saw our ranger after we checked in to camp, leaving us lost on topics such as service projects. Additionally, the staff is quite conservative with which service projects they will give to scouts. fFor example, removing fallen/misgrown tree branches from paths was off limits, and only for the staff, despite these tree pieces clearly having been there for weeks if not months. Finally, the waterfront staff were very very strict this season. I understand that the waterfront staff are in charge of one of the more dangerous areas at any summer camp, and there is some level of strict-ness that must be present. But Merriwether's waterfront staff were frequently angry with those violating even the smallest of rules, or even asking simple questions like whether they have to move their name tags.Overall, I really enjoyed my time at Merriwether, but it was not perfect.

The good:The facilities and infrastructure are great. Obviously a lot of time, effort, and money have gone into this place. Camping is easy with their "mini-dacs" and the campsites are well arranged and centrally located. You will definitely be walking a lot, you won't have to walk far relative to other campsites.Everything was run very efficiently in '23, at least by week 6.As far as amenities for the Scout Camp - the food is decent (and plenty of it), the wifi for scout masters good, and they offer some badges which can't be found elsewhere along with a very flexible schedule to earn them.Lots of extra things to do besides earning badges. The bike course is great (if you can get on it) and the ocean views are great as well, when its not fogged in.The bad:Weather can be off/on. If it hasn't rained in a while, there will be layers and layers of dust blowing everywhere. Nothing the camp can do about this - it just is. And if the fog comes in, the ocean views are gone and everything ocean-related is canceled...fast.The Trading Post knows they are the only game in town and charges accordingly ($2/can of soda anyone?).The number of badges a kid can earn is very limited. With 1.5hr classes, its never going to be labeled a "merit badge factory". But with tons of non-merit badge offerings, its not a camp destination for those people who only want to rank up.The ugly:Rules. In 40 years of Scouting, I have never run into a camp with so many rules, and a good portion of them arbitrary. So many rules, it kills most of the fun anyone can have. And the staff spend most of their time dwelling on them too, again to the detriment of all.The beach and ocean are mostly off limits - rules. The bike course is pristine - because no one is allowed to ride it for the most part (and many of the bikes are in disrepair). And supposedly they have a rule against bringing your own bike, even when your bike is far and away superior to what they have at camp. When I asked about singing "happy birthday" to kids who had a birthday that week, I was told that singing that song was a form of "hazing" and they don't do it. I double and triple checked, and yes, they think of it as "hazing".The waterfront (not to be confused with the beachfront) staff in 2023 were probably the worst. So focused on making sure people were following the smallest of rules, they missed big things like a kid having an asthma attack. Finally, they allowed a male staff member to play gender politics by having a "she/her" button during the entire camp which caused some issues and lots of questions amongst kids who have not been exposed to that kids of stuff previously.I had heard great things about the camp so had great hopes the extra time and expense to attend it would be worth it. It wasn't. My troop wont be back. Between the too woke attitudes, the 10in rule book which they seemed to add to when it was convenient, and the limiting of access to some of the best advertised aspects of the camp (ocean, bike course) - its not worth it.

The best scout camp! Awesome staff, great merit badge offerings during summer camp. The best shooting sports ranges. Family camp and super weekends during the off season. And plenty of service projects to be had. My family and I have spent countless hours here and will continue to spend many more in the future!

Great camp and staff. I have been there as a scout and now that I'm a leader it's still one of the best camps in the northwest

The campsite & its facilities are as beautiful as i remember from my youth: if your group is planning on using these camp grounds bring additional adults for safety & plan accordingly to keep everyone in your group safe, healthy & happy.
