Great barber shop!

The hidden underground experience is cool, but not much to see. A few shops and a couple of bars and the odd alien standing in the corner. Not much of an experience but worth the detour I guess.

I did read that the shops change over time, I was a little disappointed that there was only one shop down there besides the barber, but it was still really cool. The weird sisters freak boutique is very eclectic, and the owner is welcoming. The shop is eclectically decorated, and you kind of feel like you've entered some alternate dimension when you walk in. Totally my style! They sell everything from vintage clothing, to handmade items by local artists. follow the shop to the back, have a little dance in the tiniest disco, and make your way back to the speakeasy if it makes you feel like you've gone back in time. I would love to see this awesome future speakeasy serve drinks as there were some tables sit back there; I could see myself drinking some sort of magical brew and reading back there.Bought some really cool stuff and look forward to going back someday soon .

The Astoria Hidden Underground Experience is a collection of unusual shops in a basement space by Astoria's piers and Riverwalk. There are two street entrances. One has the Witches' Brew Coffee and Witches' Supplies window. Take your coffee or tea downstairs, and lounge on antique Victorian sofas while sipping in the large central commons space. The shops do change over time. The anchor is a vintage clothing, home items, and body care store, Weird Sisters Freak Boutique, which has its own social media you can find. It was designed by a theatrical scenery designer. She has made an octopus tentacle, and an amazing tree inside the store, and made the walls and ceiling into a cave! There is a small about 4 foot by 4 foot space with curved free form walls, and painted with the walls, floor and ceiling in deformed black and white checker board. When you enter, music and laser lights are activated; it is the "World's Smallest Disco," for real. Beyond that they are working on a future small speakeasy. The vintage clothing is well curated. Foragers is a store with very reasonably priced locally made cutting boards, all things mushroom, and gift items. There are many mushrooms in the Coast Range, and I had a conversation with the shop person on the high price of mushroom forager baskets. Craftspersons, please provide us some options! There is also a barber shop and a screen printer. They have art shows on the Astoria art walk night. Many of the ground floor businesses in the one story building are art galleries. The Hidden Underground may do events on solar holidays, including a WInter Solstice craft and art event this December. In 2019 I heard about them through my circus friends, but did not make it there, for their Meow Wolf-like "Wonderland Through the Wardrobe." It included costumed actors and plenty of interaction things for children and their Insta companion adults. You can find photos of that on their social media, but it may never recur because it was months of work to produce. Astoria, like the rest of the coast, has many tourist-oriented businesses. There are many antique-y, curio, and curated artisan product stores in Astoria. This one is essential to add to your list to visit. It is a theatrical set. Although Portland (and Austin) are weird, the Underground Experience shames them in a delightful way!
