Very interesting. It has some rooms with music and videos, that was something new for a gallery. They have a focus in Canada (of course), US and Europe.

❤️ the National Art gallery. There is enough variety of exhibits to meet the need of everyone. One minor complain is once you are inside, there is not enough signs to show where the exit or stairs are. In case you need to catch the tourist bus, it may take some effort to get out when you are in one of the exhibition hall.

I am more into European painting. The museum has a very good collection. They are very well organized and you can walk through separate sections dedicated to different eras and movements. Definitely worth to go more than once.

Enormous high quality collection with probably the most impressive collection of Donald Judd sculpture I’ve seen in a single institution outside of his “flagship” Marfa, Texas. Not only does this museum have an extensive variety of Donald Judds different mediums / materials [steel, wood, bronze, plywood etc] but they even made sure to display their gorgeous and immense “stack” PROPERLY as Donald instructed with even amount of space between each piece of the sculpture with the same distance also to the floor and the ceiling. [besides Marfa, Judds Soho studio/home/workspace = I can’t recall ever seeing a stack properly displayed so as a Judd purist, this REALLY excited me!].Plus the museum has a fabulous “screaming pope” Francis Bacon, the most magnificent and gigantuan (dinosaur sized) Louise Bougeouise “spider” out front, an unexpected pair of Klimts, a simple and quite minimal Piet Mondrian with a single blue square, Edward Munch, an entire room dedicated to fine examples of abstract expressionism [massive barnett Newman zig painting and an equally enormous Mark Rothko] just lost of masterpieces along with native Canadian arts and crafts. The building itself is quite beautiful in a minimalist / cement / brutalist architecture tho with plenty of natural light. Also there are breathtaking views of the Canadian parliament building which looks like a gothic castle to me as seen in my posted photographs.

Beautiful building, even more beautiful art pieces and exhibits. Walking around here was the highlight of my trip. This is my second time visiting this art gallery and it was even better than the first. I'd recommend 2 hours minimum to make your way through. The information panels that are often in rooms expanded my knowledge of art history and gave vital background information that made for a better viewing experience. Turns out, I'm a 17th century Dutch and 19th century French impressionist fan, along with 19th century Canadian art, which I wouldn't have known without this gallery.
