“They’re Tricky About That Sometimes.”
I don’t do much business in North Toledo—let alone Toledo in general. Many drivers there, I suspect, have death wishes, and really, really want to bring company to the Other Side with them.
But on March 26, 2024, I was in the neighborhood, and at 5:10pm, I paid for an overpriced snack at Dollar General #6853.
It wasn’t like I didn’t have warning. The woman in front of me at the self-checker was flummoxed. She was ringing up what looked like doggie snacks, and thought there was a “buy one, get one” kind of sale on them. It wasn’t ringing out that way.
While I was waiting, I noted peanut butter M&M’s. There was a sale posted, buy two for $2. (This sale is currently on the store’s website.) Those along with some peanuts would make a good improvised trail mix, I thought. I don’t remember if I read the sign aloud, or if the cashier noted I was picking up two packs, but she warned me that the sale was for regular single packs only.
“They’re tricky like that sometimes,” she said.
I looked again. I could only see M&M’s packaged in something called “Share Size.” The “2 for $2” signs were hung with the Share Sized candies. I was tired, wanted a snack, and then refreshed, just wanted to make the long drive home, so I decided to take a chance.
The woman in front of me gave up and left, not happy and ready to call balderdash (I’m being nice here) and perhaps curse the place.
I went to ring my stuff out. I paid $2.35 for a bottle of Coke Zero, so I knew I was in for it. It was bad enough the product wasn’t in a common sense kind of place like the front cooler, but near the alcohol. It was worse knowing I might find a 16-oz can at the Dollar Tree at the other corner for a buck twenty-five. Maybe that’s another way they’re tricky: they want to fatten you up on sugar and make you addicted.
And yes, I paid a full $2.25 per package of M&M’s because somebody’s so tricky with signage.
I lived with it. Until I got home.
That bag of peanuts was the kind of brand that would’ve retailed for maybe 99¢ a few years ago. I looked at the pack again in preparation to write this review and noticed something strange.
On the package of Frito Lay Munchies salted peanuts, I noted a clearly-printed stamp indicating the bag was $1.29. On my receipt, I was charged $1.95. I used a self-checker, so no one else scanned it or input a price.
And because I like to document these things, stamped beneath the “SELL BY:” on the peanut package was:
16 Jul 2024
1.29
24T228308
66 (long space) 18:29
I imagine the last set of digits are identifier codes.
Now, I know in this case it’s a extra couple of bucks…but what if A) you wanted a larger product and the listed pricing was all mucked up and/or B) if you are really running close to the bone financially? Suddenly, these tricks become a bit more malevolent, don’t they?
So yeah, they can be tricky here. And I’m not in a hurry to give them any more treats.

The staff is NEVER friendly at this store. They act like they can't be bothered with your purchase. I only go here because its close to my job. Even though the store is tidy now, the staff's attitude would prevent me from going back. Instead of rearranging the store, maybe they should give their employees some training in how to interact with the customers. Only gave it 3 stars because of the organization.

I always know what to expect when I go there so Im rarely disappointed. I always buy my paper products and laundry supplies there because it's always a few dollars cheaper than my grocer.

Usually find exactly what I was looking for here. Prices aren't bad, staff is usually nice and helpful. Be careful at this location after dark though, they frequently get robbed.
