shop here all the time. Always use the self-checkout. The staff that work the self-checkout in the evening have always been nice. The morning shift through the week is some grumpy people. If I hated my job that much I would find a new one.

Won't shop here again the bathrooms are disgusting! Also spent about $200 here just now and the lady was super rude she stood right on top of me worrying bout me scanning when there was others waiting for her I didn't have any issues and than would question what I was scanning when it was literally coming up and making the sound of being scanned! She offered to scan my water I said yes thanks but I can grab the cat food bc it isn't heavy and I didn't want it near my food items till the end she ended up doing it anyways when I asked her not to yet because than I had to also wait for her to do it even tho I didn't want her too, the way she acted made me want to just say I don't want anything and when I asked her to help with my card she acted like she was judging how I was paying with 2 cards like at least I am paying I'm not just stealing stuff I'm trying to pay for my stuff which it went through by the way! Point is she was very rude and judge mental I won't shop here again I'll stick to burg Kroger's

Kroger here in Portsmouth has friendly staff. The staff here are always helpful and manage to keep everything stocked. The gas prices are good. It may be a little hard to find a parking spot though.

Update: I was contacted by Christian, from Kroger corporate. He told me I could go back to the store and the manager would offer me a refund or exchange. I don't want something for nothing. I don't want to deal with the local employees again. I feel like I was listened to and he apologized. I added a star to my original review. I also want other customers not to get taken advantage of. Hopefully, the website will be updated to accurately describe the food. If it had been, I would have made a different purchase.

One star is too much for this store. However, there are some very pleasant employees who do try to make it a pleasant shopping experience. Unfortunately, the store is terribly mismanaged. There aren't enough employees and the one who are the are scheduled effectively. The store is disorderly and more often than not kinda of dirty. But by far, the most egregious and consistent problem is the lack of stock, particularly sale items. Not on the last day of the sale, not one obscure item, but item, after item after item. I have tried speaking to management to no avail. In fact my last attempt ending in me suggesting she find a different job, because although I had not spoken to that particular manager before, she didn't care what my problem was, she took no steps to solve it, she offered no apologies other than 'I am sorry you feel that way'. Her body language and tone were contemptuous and she was the third employee I had encountered who had smirked and rolled their eyes. I have shopped at Kroger for over 30 years, in at least half a dozen states. This one is scum you scrape off the bottom of your shoe, not because of location...because of poor management. As much as I hate to, I may have to start shopping elsewhere.

This Kroger has done a great job of blending into the surrounding community rather than sticking out like a brick sore thumb. The entrance is actually on a side street and the side that borders the main road in Portsmouth is painted with a mural. Fitting since the flood wall a few blocks south is painted with murals! But inside, its still just another Kroger. Prices are a bit higher than the Walmart down the road but it is certainly convenient for downtown Portsmouth. There don't have an extensive selection (International food section was basically Mexican) but its enough to get your basics and get you through your weekly shop. It loses marks with me for not being open 24 hours though. I've had too many late night baking emergencies to understand the importance of this. And I'd wondered where the Starbucks in Portsmouth was. I mean, there can't be a town with a population over 5,00 without a Starbucks, right? Well, its in here.

Great grocery store! This location has a Starbucks! The only one in Portsmouth. Kroger also has good selection of whole/health/vegan foods. Also a wide variety of books and magazines. Full bakery and deli serving an assortment of baked goods and fresh soup and pasta salads.
