November 2024 by Not Another Sword Review Channel
Refused to allow a dying animal the mercy of a kind passing. Took 5 seconds to look at the pet and said it was healthy and fine.
I had called the day before and spoke to the main "veterinarian" there and we discussed the situation. We made an appointment for the next day. When I came, they acted like they had no knowledge of the appointment, the pet or the circumstances. Like it never happened. I even spoke to the same person I had made the appointment with the day before.
I don't think they have any idea of what they are doing. More of a place to adopt strays rather than an actual facility.

Extremely unprofessional. Strung me through a long and over complicated application process, interview, never followed up, and did not return my call or email.

I adopted my first kitten here a few weeks ago, she is perfect and I couldn’t be happier. The adoption process was thorough and the staff was so friendly and super helpful!

I adopted a kitten from here about 2 months ago and there were a couple concerning things that occurred. The adoption process was not thorough what so ever. From the time that I said I wanted to adopt my kitten to filling out the application to leaving was only 15 minutes. They throw all the vet records at you with no explanation. I got home and looked at the vet records and it said that he was only neutered 2 days previous to when I took him home which they didn’t bring to my attention at all. I wish I knew that sooner so I would have known to keep an eye out for infection or him licking. His paper work also said that he was negative for worms so I didn’t think to worry about it. Well when I took him to the vet for his next round of vaccines he had worms very bad. He was very close to becoming extremely ill and the vet also didn’t agree with the age that the humane society was stating on their vet records. It made me wonder how many kittens that hadn’t been adopted yet were sitting at the facility sick with worms that they didn’t know about. They had also told me that they were feeding him dry kibble which my kitten was way too young to be having a dry diet like that. So many red flags!!! Makes me sad to say this because there are so many animals out there that need homes but I will never being adopting from the Lake Humane Society again.

Absolutely love Lake Humane, all the staff are incredibly nice and I’ve spent years fostering kittens for them. Please go and spend time with the animals and definitely adopt through them! You’ll find your fuzzy family member for life there!

I went into the lake human society with my sister today Saturday August 31,2024. I am looking for two cats and I thought this would be a good place. A woman there by the bame of Lori is absolutely horrible. Very rude and disrespectful. How do you expect to get animals adopted if you can't touch them or play with them? This woman is preventing pets from getting adopted. This place had changed over the years.

Savanna was amazing.
She was patient and so knowledgeable.
We stopped by and ended up taking home a kitten named California.
We kept the name and call her Cali.
She is so fun and loves to be held .
She is litter box trained.
4 days and not one accident .
We are so pleased and happy with the process that we cannot recommend this place enough.

Everyone at Lake Humane was so kind and made my adoption process so simple! I recently had a bad experience at a different shelter in Akron and felt doubtful, so Lake Humane completely reassured me and I ended up bringing home my sweet Luna Tuna. So thankful for everyone at the shelter as well as my beautiful kitty girl!

Everyone I met at the shelter was caring, kind, compassionate and friendly.
All the animals appear to be loved and well cared for.
Seeing all the animals at the shelter tugs at your heart strings! It's hard not to want to adopt them all!
Please remember if you adopt a new member of your family,
that one week is never enough time for them to adjust,
It can take months for them to feel secure and at home. They are not able to verbally share with us what they have experienced!
Please adopt, and be patient, you won't regret it.

I hate to leave a negative review of a place that works with animals but I feel compelled to share my story as a caution to others potentially adopting from this organization. For starters, the adoption process was extremely unorganized. An adoption counselor was supposed to call us at a certain time to discuss our application, they never did, so we called and they told us no adoption counselors were available to talk so we had to schedule another time. They also didn’t properly disclose the adoption process. You actually foster the dog for a week time period and then can either adopt or return the animal. This is fine and actually preferred, but this was hardly explained. We were just told to sign a paper and got a stack of her medical records and sent on our way. We finally adopted her and signed off on everything. A huge red flag here was my husband noticed a box near the front desk labeled “euthanasias”. How absolutely disgusting and disgraceful to have this on display for potential adopters. I get that it’s an unfortunate reality for some animals in horrific condition, but this is unacceptable to have in plain view of the public. Not a good look at all. They offer a free vet exam coupon to be used within three weeks, which is a great idea, so we took advantage of that. The vet noticed that she was up to date on everything minus her heartworm test. We thought a heartworm test was standard for all pet intakes at this shelter so we called them to confirm (we thought we saw on the paperwork the test was negative). The clueless woman on the line claimed that “she had been tested most likely, we just can’t find the documentation of the test on our end” so we ended up having to pay out of pocket for another heartworm test just to be negative to get a rx for her preventative meds. Turns out, Lake Humane had the heartworm test documented on her foster paperwork but not her actual adoption records. My dog also tested positive for coccidia (I know kind of unavoidable in shelters, but still they should’ve given us warning that she had consistent soft stool). I chalked it up to stress in a new environment but my dog had soft stool from day one that lasted 3 weeks till this appt when she was properly diagnosed. Are the dogs at this shelter not given stool tests? My dog also had an infection on her spay site, most likely due to her licking the area. Lake Humane claimed she “wasn’t licking” and “didn’t need a cone” so they didn’t keep one on her. We adopted her less than two weeks after her spay and she was constantly licking when we brought her home. If proper aftercare was taken, maybe my poor pup wouldn’t haven’t gotten an infection there. In addition, she had terrible allergies in which she was constantly licking her paws to the point of them becoming raw and red. I understand the shelter operates largely on a volunteer basis, but this is completely unacceptable. They also guessed her age wrong according to our current vet (we got 2 opinions) and claimed to have no backstory on her even though she was allegedly removed from a home as part of a humane investigation. My dog has been through a lot in her short life already and this added garbage has not been pleasant for her, myself, or my husband. Shame on you Lake Humane for not following basic documentation guidelines, withholding information/potential health concerns about your animals, and operating in a very suspicious manner. I will never adopt another animal from here. I am so happy to have adopted my sweet baby and glad to have her finally thriving in my home, but I cannot recommend this place to anyone else.
