I've been filing taxes every year since about 2007, but 2023 was the first year I decided to see a preparation agency to do my taxes. It will also be the last that I ever consider H&R Block for that job. And I don't write bad reviews (or very many reviews at all) unless I absolutely feel that I have to. I just had an experience so bad that I am a little shocked. And I have to let people know. I am telling you - do not go here. At all. FLEE.So why did I decide to make an appointment when I've done my taxes myself successfully until now? Well, I made an appointment since this is the first year filing taxes as a married couple. My wife and I wanted to make sure that we had the best refund possible because we had four different return numbers with the same scenario on four different platforms. We were completely perplexed as to why there was such discrepancy, and we thought why not have a pro work it out for us? My tax info was a slam dunk if you're an H&R Block employee. We have extremely basic W-2s, standard deduction, not rocket science here. I went in fully expecting to overpay for a simple service. But my reasoning was simple: learn the details this year and utilize the knowledge from here on out. Call it an "investment" year in my financial education. But I ended up teaching the class. Which was...scary. Because the class wasn't even on taxes. My "tax professional" had 27 or so year of experience but STRUGGLED to get through even the most basic task. She entered numbers wrong, misspelled my name, my wife's name, my job title (Oh, and when I corrected her on my job title, she said she did not believe me). When I told her my wife's name has an "E" at the end, she looked at me in my face and said the words "I do not understand what you are trying to tell me." This is an employed human being. A human being that I am trusting with telling the government what taxes I paid. After misspelling every word on my tax return intake form, we reviewed the abomination. I politely tried to correct words, but that was an entire 5 minute ordeal. I get it, neurodivergence is real, and bad spelling doesn't mean bad at taxes. But I truly did not need to be told that *I* was the issue with spelling when it was the preparer having issues. And when those issues could potentially ruin your life, maybe it's a bit important to not be snippy about your own inadequacies. When we get into the actual taxes, she's perplexed that my wife's W-2 shows no federal withholding. I look at the form and realize that this is a version of my wife's W-2 that I zoomed into to show the address. The other version, with all relevant detail, was provided as well, digitally and physically. I said earlier that I was ready to overpay. Hell, I figured I'd probably pay double what it would cost me to do it virtually. But nope - it was almost TWENTY FOUR times the cost of my tax program. I laughed at her when she quoted me that. There was no way this was a serious enterprise. That's too much of an investment for me.But by that point I was arguing that my job is not spelled "ENVENRENMENTAL SCENTIST", and I was tired of doing all of the legwork that the preparer should be doing (she should catch MY mistakes, not the other way around) and so I had enough and left.Do your own taxes. And if you don't, do them somewhere else. Avoid this place like the plague.
