It's free which is great. Building is very cool, but, a lot of the art is kinda wierd, ugly, or impossible to really define as art. I've been to several art museums in Europe and they all had real classic art.

Some nice galleries in the upper level with a decent collection of art— heavy on portraits, especially of rich old Daytonians. Beautiful courtyard. Lower level is rather dreary.

A museum that Dayton is lucky to have. You'll find Hopper, Monet, Ruben, Degas, and more. The collection ranges from American art to European art, Oceanic art, fine glass, and more. Be sure not to miss the Hale Cloister - a serene oasis in Dayton. It's one of my favorite places I've discovered. The rotating exhibits are great as well. So far, I've caught fantastic exhibits on Toulouse Lautrec and Edward Hopper.
Additionally, right now (summer 2024), admission is free for military members and their families as part of the Blue Star museums network.

The Dayton Art Institute is a small but well organized and interesting art gallery.
Set in a semi-circular arrangement the art in the main galleries follows a chronological order of western art.
The best part of the display is the explanation next to each painting that describes the scene, exposed details or hidden elements, or something about the artistic technique.
It is worth a visit and easily combined with a visit to the Dayton Aviation Heritage sites.

The employees at the entrance are very nice and welcoming. But, overall, it is a very stodgy environment. I was with two very well-behaved 10-yr old girls, and it was like the staff was stalking us on video, as they sent someone to tell us the kids cant't point at the paintings and have to stay 18 inches back. When the employee approached and said this, we looked around because we were 3 feet from anything. That's when he said they saw something on video. Very weird vibe. This place is not at all kid-friendly or good for kids. We won't return. Do not recommend.

DAI is a gem for Dayton and Ohio. An impressive midsized world class collection. The rotating Special Exhibition schedule is wonderful, and the seasonal entertainment is top notch. A very convenient location with additional highlights for Dayton nearby.

DAI hosted our wedding reception during the total solar eclipse earlier this month. It was the perfect venue, having both indoor and outdoor spaces meant our reception could go on regardless of weather. (luckily that wasn't necessary)
The staff we worked with were super helpful. Even with a coordinator change a few months before they wedding, they made sure our new coordinator was up to speed on everything and helped everything go off without a hitch. They also were more than kind to open up any closed exhibits the day of and show us around the place to ensure we had all the pictures they wanted.
The art was also very beautiful there, they made a great addition to our wedding photos. We definitely recommend DAI to work with to have as a reception venue for your wedding!

The Dayton Art Institute is a great place to take your special occasion pictures. The esthetics are gorgeous, the location is perfect, and you will cherish the images for life. We had the opportunity to meet up with our Giddaughter for Prom pictures. I didn't realize it would be so busy with students from all school districts taking pictures as well. We found great spots to capture her senior prom photos. I highly recommend the Dayton Ark Institute as the place to be for awesome backgrounds and cool vibes before your cherished events.

I went to the DAI to check out their theatre for a conference booking for education. The staff was very nice and helpful. The endless venue possibilities were impressive.
I would recommend this venue for a mixer, educational conference, concert or wedding. Your guests will be impressed.

I've been before and it is a nice museum; however went here with my wife and high school daughter today and had a very bad experience. Museum was pretty empty. After paying $35 entry fee, my wife asked if she could take some pictures around the museum of my daughter as long as didn't use a flash. A manager came out and said that would cost us an additional $75 photography fee. We left. Evidently empty museum doesn't need more patrons.
