Oh my goodness,
I have been looking for a trainer for the past 5 months after my dog was bit by a dog. There was no trainer I could find that would work with him without using a choke, shock, spike method. Which I absolutely did not want for my baby. I did not want him to be in more pain than he already was.
After looking on the internet for MONTHS, seemed like forever. I saw a student and owner that has been trained by the Ohio state k-9 college at a dog park and I was amazed at how she listened to her owner and behaved. Dog’s name was Gracie, owner was Thelma. Gracie trusted her owner and was very friendly with me and my dog (who was scared of other dogs after what happened )
After the research, couldn’t find anyone that teaches the 100% voice control method like Joe which I absolutely wanted. So I had to meet him , to also get the same training for my dog. I have been in shock and amazed at how he works with his dogs. He gave me a live demonstration of his Belgian Malinois and she was ONLY 6 months old. She was so well trained with no EQUIPMENT. She OBEYED the FIRST command with (whisper and hand commands) while standing right in front of my dog touching noses. If you don’t believe me check out the rest of the other reviews on here. Check his website also, he is the only one who has a website that explains exactly what he can do to help you and your dog. No one else offers the state of the art system he uses. DO YOUR RESEARCH AND YOU WILL BE AT JOE’s. ALL the reviewers did.

I have always loved dogs since I was a child.
When I was about 24 Years Old (back in 1988), I was interested
in purchasing a dog, but wasn't sure which breed to select to meet my needs.
So, I opened my Local Yellow Pages and started looking at various dog training schools.
I saw the Ohio State K-9 College ad and I decided to call
and speak with Joey.
Joey suggested that I come to the school and watch him
perform a live demonstration with his dogs, So I did.
My living situation changed and I was unable to purchase the
dog back then.
I have never forgotten how well Joey's trained his Female Rottweiler and Male Doberman Pinscher were trained.
Fast forward to 2024, I finally purchased a dog.
I decided to call Joey and ask for his help with my dog, after struggling for several months.
After seeing his new live demonstration, I knew I wanted my dog trained using a 100% voice control method of training.
Joey is very passionate about his work, and really enjoys explaining to his potential students (from start to finish) how he attains his perfect results.
Joey explains everything they need to know to comparison shopping all Dog Training Schools.
This is so they will be able to finally understand WHY he is the Best Trainer in the Industry..
After doing proper research and vetting, they are only interested
in working with Joey, because they discover about how how other Schools training differs so much from his.
It is obvious to the potential student that other Schools are not the right fit for their Dog, and they call Joey to request an evaluation.

A good friend had a litter of 8 week old, American Staffordshire terrier puppies and called to see if I wanted one. I have alway been impressed with this breeds ability to protect their owner and family.
After seeing the litter, I selected the puppy I desired and took him home to meet my kids.
My kids and I decided to name him Oso, since his Fathers name was Kso.
Soon afterwards, he started developing many undesirable behaviors: Barking, growling, and even snapping at my kids, including chewing on many different items. I tried to train Oso on my own a couple months, but was very unsuccessful.
So by the time Oso was about 4 months old, I employed a
friend to help me train him. My friend told me that I needed to leave Oso with him for 4 weeks or so for the obedience and behavior training needed.
Once I got Oso home, I found his obedience training was very inconsistent with the commands he knew. While on-leash he would SIT after commanding him (2 or 3 times in a row) but, wouldn't obey when off-leash, including with the down command.
Oso didn't obey any of these commands: Stay, come, and heel.
Oso never showed any improvement with any of the behavior training issues, the trainer promised to fix.
When Oso was about 8 months old, he wouldn't obey any of his commands (while on-leash or off-leash) so my friend told me to purchase a shock collar and I did.
A couple days later, I got the collar and called my friend to teach me how to use it. But the results were nearly the same, even though I continued to work with Oso until he was 10 months old, however, he wouldn't any of my command when the collar was off.
At this point, I was stressed out about all my dog's unsuccessful training and totally quit working with him. Then, I even tried to sell him on the internet, but no one would purchase him. After I told my kids that I wanted to sell him, they were devastated, they begged me not too.
For sake of my kids I kept him and started researching training over the internet and watching videos, hoping this would help, but it didn't.
My dog was gradually getting more confused and much more stubborn as time went on.
I was determined to get him properly trained and started calling professional trainers on the internet, but, most of them wanted to use a Choke, Spike, or Shock collar to train him, which my kids and I adamantly disapprove of.
While shopping at Home Depot, I met a man with a Belgium Malinois, which was the best trained dog that I have ever seen. His dog would obey every
command on-leash & off-leash (with no equipment whatsoever), even with WHISPER commands and obeyed every command on the first command.
Tom gave me his trainer Joey's business card and told me to call him and as soon as I returned home I did.
Joey and I had a very through conversation. He explained everything that is good and bad about all training schools, so that I could understand exactly HOW to get my dog trained like Tom's.
Since Joey has been in his profession over forty-six years, and after me seeing his work in person, it was a no brainer that I needed his help with my dog.
Joey asked me to go to his, Joey Byas Face Book webpage. Then click on his VIDEO link, so I could see the end results with nearly (all his training courses) with his students actually handing their own dogs trained by him.
I did and then called him back and set my appointment for the evaluation testing for my dog & for my personal handling skills with my dog.
Afterwards, I was so serious about getting the best training for my dog that read over 100 of Joey's student reviews on Google.
These reviews compelled me to

After extensive online research and many conversations with a myriad of trainers, I chose Joey to train my 2-year-old Labrador Retriever. I liked his approach of not depending on food or pain to get one's dog to listen to them, instead relying on the dog's respect for and desire to please their owner as part of a mutually fulfilling relationship. Having learned a tremendous amount of information from Joey and finding his approach smart and methodical, I 100% recommend him and his training approach. You will find that almost all Joey's reviews are either 1 or 5 stars. This is because it takes a certain type of person to understand and appreciate the level of training being offered at Ohio State K-9 College. Joey understandably does not want to waste his time on those unable to understand, or unwilling to commit to the comprehensive system required to succeed. Having experienced this successful system, I am proud to say I am one of Joey's students :)

The Ohio State K9 College is the only school I could find that has a state of the art system of training. They have a Master Trainer with 46 years of experience that personally trains every dog and their owner. They are also the only school that has a 100% voice control method of training. They also only offer the best training possible for a dog and their owner, which is 1 on 1 training. In nearly 2 years of research over the internet, I haven't found any school that has the courses I need to properly train my dog for PTSD.

I have 2 words to describe Master trainer Joey Byas: Amazing and Fantastic. He spent 2+ hours of focused individual attention with me answering all my questions and explaining what he has been doing since he established The Ohio State K-9 College in 1978. Joey trains both the dog AND the handler. This ensures that the dog will achieve first command performance for the handler after graduation. His 100% Voice Control Method uses no choke, spike, or shock collars, nor treats for training. While talking with Joey I realized that The Ohio State K-9 College is the best school for my pup, and every pup, to receive training with their handler.Joey, once again I just want to say you are amazing. Thank you so much for every second of your time! Time is money, and this is quality!!!

Bottom Line: If money is an issue, the price may be prohibitive. Just like you wouldn't go to Mitchell's Ocean Club with a Red Lobster budget. It would have been great to know that upfront so I'm telling you now. But the price is more than fair for the service.
Full Review: My goal is to write an objective review. I did not sign up with OSK9 but I did complete an evaluation today (12/6/2022), which is why I can only give 3 stars to be fair in either direction. I do believe Joey is an excellent trainer and I would have enrolled but his services were out of my price range. Like most people, I tried to gauge if I could afford to train my dog even before adopting one because I want to be a safe and responsible owner. The "starting price" he mentioned after our first phone call was the deposit amount for the Total Control Course. Giving the benefit of the doubt, perhaps I misunderstood that to mean the course could be as low as that price, assuming your dog was a young pup and had the best potential for training. In selecting a dog to adopt, I switched from looking at a dog 1-2 years old to a puppy in order to be able to afford the training. I was interested in adding the personal protection course as well, which I disclosed.
I was hoping the evaluation would give me the quote for both Total Control and Personal Protection. I was trying to be transparent about my financial situation and said from the beginning I don't want to get a dog if I can't afford to train it how I needed it. Nor did I want to waste his or my time. I really wish Joey would have said from day 1, "Sorry dear but what you're looking for isn't in your budget unless you have at least (whatever dollar amount) regardless of what trainer you go to."
So at first, I felt duped into paying for an eval for a service wouldn't have been able to afford. But to be honest, the money I spent on the eval and all the time he talked with me beforehand was a fair trade. I did learn a couple things and would have signed up immediately if I could. Honestly, had the price quoted included personal protection training, I would have found a way to financially make it work. The main reason I was set on Joey was his personal protection class, which isn't something that many people offer. But that was another evaluation and fee TBD after the dog completes Total Control (which makes sense to complete the course first, I just didn't know the quote couldn't be given upfront after the first eval.)
This being my first dog and now taking time to think of it, I was extremely naïve in my price expectations and should I realized the number he gave me couldn't have been the cost of a comprehensive 1:1 course, although I was expecting it to be maybe 2x that amount since I didn't have a super young pup. And considering Joey trains the owner, the price basically includes teaching you how to train every dog you'll ever own. I'd also then teach my husband and daughter as well as I learned. He's not creating repeat customers and considering what other places charge for them to train your dog (meaning you'll need to bring in every dog you own), it's a really great value overall.
Like I said, I would have signed up but I simply can't afford it. Besides not giving me a straight answer about what a Total Control Package would cost on the phone, there's nothing I can truly fault Joey for. I ended up with a great dog that I wouldn't have gotten if I had known I couldn't enroll her with Joey. Everything in life happens for a reason so I have no regrets but I am worried about having a young pup that I don't have the skill or finances to train. I had no idea how much help she needed until the eval and now I can't unsee it. At this point, all I can do is my best not to ruin her and continue to save up. Joey will train older dogs but the more problems they have, the more it'

Called this place to get a ballpark understanding of the pricing because I'm thinking of getting 2 dogs, and the phone attendant gave me a smart answer about reading the website. He could not share the average amount of time it takes to train a dog nor any figures on pricing. He was very rude and if this is the attitude I'd have to deal with when it came to my dogs Ohio State K-9 would have to worry about more than a bad review. I say stay away from any place like this.

I’m so happy with everything i received for my dog Max and I. I was nervous at first but i truly got everything and more than what i paid for. He truly trains ME on how to handle my dog so Max and I understand each other.
Edit: After graduating, Max developed aggression towards me with bones and toys. I tried to handle it myself with no success. I called up Joe and we immediately worked together again to fix the problem. I’m so proud of my dog and how far we’ve both gotten under Joe’s guidance.
Thank you so much Joe!

This seems like it's probably a scam website. All kinds of nonsense about secrets to the art of and choke collars actually crushing the dogs esophagus. Just the standard kind of nonsense you see in the "only I know the right way" miracle seller market.

I would caution against using any so-called Master Trainer that continuously brags about being a Master Trainer all over their website. As there is no actual certifying body, this is a title they gave themselves - unless he is a graduate of a training school such as Tarheel in NC that uses that title to denote graduation of their police canine course. Especially one that discusses training tools, but doesn’t even use the proper name of many training tools nor does he discuss their proper use. If you are considering using him, ask for evidence that the tools do what he claims. Ask to see visible proof of his training process that gets a dog to do behaviors based on his “voice” only. Don’t look at a dog he claims to have trained this way and think “oh this training method works” look at dogs in the process of being trained. A majority of trainers that claim to never use treats or aversive tools anywhere in their process are scam artists. I, admittedly, have never trained under this individual and, speaking as a professional trainer, never would. There is no one size fits all approach to dog training and anyone that pretends there is (refuses the use of tools) is a fool. All dogs don’t need tools, but some do!
EDIT: It’s interesting that your response kind of proves the majority of low reviews you have - the arrogance your business displays. The expectations that someone reads your whole website before coming to you for training. Kind of interesting that if you’re such a master trainer that has been doing this for over 40 years that no one outside of Ohio really knows anything about you and the majority of trainers in Ohio laugh at you. Your website reads like a “as seen on TV” product I’d find on an aisle in Walmart that falls apart a week after you have it. I’ll take the advice of the Cam Ford’s, Glen Cooke’s, Jerry Bradshaw’s, Ivan Balbinov’s etc (all of which use training tools CORRECTLY without harming animals as you claim) over someone that outright demonstrates they don’t really know anything about the modern tools they are denigrating!

Joe is excellent, he is the ONLY trainer I’ve found that does not use horrible inhumane and animal cruelty practices. Methods other trainers use-choke, spike, shock etc. I refuse to train my dog in any other way. I’ve been looking for trainers since before I got my dog about a year ago and have been disgusted with the practices of other trainers blatantly telling me they would use shock collars on my dog. My dog has severe separation anxiety and WE are in desperate need of help. This is the only right way to train your dog people. Positive reinforcement training and voice control. And Ohio State K-9 is the ONLY school in Ohio I found that could help me train my dog in a way that I was comfortable; with 100% control with my voice. I am so happy I found Joe, he spent hours of his time on the phone with me listening to me about my dog and explaining his game plan to train me to fix it. Thank you so much Joe!
