This store is awesome. I brought in a set of used skis to get the bindings changed for my size boots. The bindings were too old and they really hooked me up with new ski/bindings set, very reasonable too. Definitely going back to First Flakes and my new skis are awesome.

Stopped by First Flakes for some ski rentals and was happy I did. I first stopped by Ski and Tennis Station and was welcomed with the normal subpar service and no kids ski rentals available. Went 2 miles down the road to First Flakes and was blown away by their friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable staff. Enjoyed some friendly college basketball rivalry banter with the staff while they waxed up the ski rentals for my son. True 5 star service!!

First time snowboarding and they were super helpful figuring out everything that I needed. Picking up everything the day in advance made the trip so much easier. Will be back again.

We had a very mixed experience, to say the least:1) Biggest negative: upon our first visit to reserve equipment, the owner would not wear a mask, despite polite requests on our part to do so, given the public health and safety concerns during Covid. On second visit, the younger male employee was hesitant to wear a mask but after repeated requests, he agreed. On our third visit to pick up the equipment, we encountered the owner again and he refused to even serve us because he did not want to mask up; he simply left the room stating, “Oh, I know who YOU all are …” This was unquestionably rude and disrespectful. We were left standing in the store wondering what to do and after a few minutes, somebody else finally came to our aid. Like many others, we know people who died from Covid and regret that a business that serves the community made us feel unsafe or ignored. Putting on a mask at the request of a customer is no great sacrifice.2) Negative: part of our equipment reservation was lost and we were delayed in leaving for our trip by almost thirty minutes while one of our family had to be refitted for all rental equipment.3) Positive: the female staff we worked with was very helpful, polite, knowledgeable. Five stars for the one who helped us directly, in fact. She was wonderful.4) Positive: the equipment was in good shape and worked very well for our needs.5) Positive: the return process was straightforward and easy.Winston-Salem is a small town. Businesses stay alive through word of mouth. I want our economy to do well and I want our local businesses to thrive, but we will not do business here again. I’m sure this will have little impact on First Flakes, and that’s fine— I want the employees and owners to have job security in these uncertain times. I especially want those employees who were helpful and courteous to not suffer because of the attitudes of some of the other staff. I also, however, feel the need to share the experience we had for the sake of transparency and in the hopes that perhaps it might convince the owner to have more consideration for *all* customers, not just those who fall into his camp when it comes to beliefs about the seriousness of this pandemic. In fact, were it not for the times we are living in, there would have been no issues with our experience, apart from the mistake with the reservation. But right now, in the midst of this pandemic, where everybody is just trying to adapt, businesses need to recognize that what might seem like a temporary inconvenience to them (wearing a mask) can make a hugely significant difference in a customer’s experience.
