DO NOT ADOPT FROM THIS PLACE! On may 6th, 2024, I went to this shelter in hopes of finding a dog for me and my 6 year old son. I decided to do a meet and greet with two male puppies that were in a litter with a few others and one older dog. When we met the puppies, I fell in love immediately with one of the pups. I asked how had he been eating and I was told “Oh he eats great, all the time”. I decide to adopt the dog and when I go to file paperwork, they tell me “make sure he’s not taken to the park or anywhere in public” I respond to them saying, “Because he could get Parvo correct?” She tells me yes and it’s very deadly.
Now regarding all of that, you would think when I mentioned Parvo, she would of told me on the spot, this dog had been exposed to this virus but instead she made it seem like he hadn’t by telling me not to take him anywhere so he wouldn’t be exposed, right?
I get the dog home, at first he was happy and playful, within less than an HOUR, my puppy became lethargic, was not eating (even though I was told, he eats all the time) He would not take a sip of water and he was throwing up and foaming at the mouth. We tried giving him fluids and thought, okay maybe it’s the stress or the car ride. A few hours after that, he starts pooping out blood. So let’s say it’s been less than 6 hours all together I’ve had my pup and these symptoms were in full swing. There is absolutely no way a dog can contract this virus within the timeframe of when we got him from the shelter, riding in the car and put into the house and already have the sign of him pooping blood with a foul odor along with his other symptoms. I’d also like to point out, we have had no other dogs so this virus could not of been in our house.
We call them the next day, immediately they were rude and just straight up said, “No, we don’t test” We got transferred to a guy at the shelter and started explaining this dog was already sick and should not have been adopted out and there was no way he just started to show symptoms. Of course, he kept denying all of this and we asked, “well can you please make this right, we have a 6 year old who just got this puppy and we told you when we came up there, we wanted this puppy for our child and now he’s going to be devastated if this dog passes away. Is there anyway y’all could help with medical bills or a refund to get him treatment at least.” We were denied again, with NOT EVEN AN APOLOGY. They didn’t sound sympathetic, they did not apologize for doing this to our family or anything. We asked what place was best to carry the puppy to for treatment and once again the guy over the phone was so rude and said “um, I guess either?!” We told them, well you do realize if this puppy has it, then they all do and we met MULTIPLE DOGS and you exposed them so they’re probably all sick. Once again, he couldn’t of cared less. And here is the kicker, they flat out told us “well you can bring him back and get a refund but we’ll just put him down” EXCUSE ME?
I’ll make this part short, we take him to a vet, he tested positive for parvovirus, the vets themselves told us, it looked like the puppy had the virus for days, not just one and we needed treatment immediately. On the spot I fork out, 400 dollars for outpatient care since the shelter was no help.
This time my fiancé calls the shelter explaining how his whole family is devastated and this was so wrong. And he proceeded to ask them about their care for these dogs and do they even give a damn about these animals or the families adopting. They responded rudely again. He asked about the litter of pups and the man over the phone slips up and says “well he was the only one showing symptoms” To which my fiancé asks “so he was sick and you guys knew?” and he immediately retracted what he said and just goes “oh I didn’t say that.” And again no apology, no resources were provided from them, no refund, no empathy for the dogs or the families. They are absolutely sick!

One thing I do not understand why are we the only county that will not let pit’s be adopted.???? There was a big write up in the Wilson Daily Times about the sheriff going with a no kill shelter. What has happen to this idea? Just do what you said you would do or make stiffer laws about spray and neuter. Also enforce a no tether law. I love Wilson County and would like to see these changes made. ?

In my personal opinion nobody should ever get a dog from this animal shelter. I fully believe in rescues I believe those are some of the best dogs in the world to have. But when an animal shelter doesn’t take proper precautions and proper care before putting a dog or a cat up for adoption it makes the experience terrible. I have adopted a husky puppy from there just little under a week ago they gave me the OK that he had all his vaccines and he was perfectly healthy puppy two days later he started having severe diarrhea and became really lethargic and would not eat or drink anything, something just didn’t sit right in my gut so I decided to take him to the emergency vet they tested him for Pavo and he came back positive I have paperwork showing that he had the Parvo vaccine that had a life strain in it. I thought that could be the reason why so I asked the doctor the doctor at the vet said no that wouldn’t cause it more than likely he had it well before they gave him the vaccination and gave it to me anyway, I’m very upset about the fact that I got stuck with a very expensive treatment for the dog I have no problem doing it but when you tell somebody that a dog is perfectly healthy and turn them over and stick somebody with a bill that’s not fair to anybody so my personal opinion unless you are truly set on a dog I would ask that they pay for a wellness check of the dog first because I would’ve went in a situation happen to anybody else
