This museum holds a special place in my heart. Some of my favorite childhood memories are going to this museum. Although it is fairly small compared to other Smithsonian-level museums, it has plenty to offer for different ages! The Cape Fear Museum is very hands-on, so I would recommend bringing hand sanitizer for after your visit if you have small kids, or are worried about high-touch surfaces. The environment encourages children to participate in hands on learning, but there's plenty for grown ups to learn, too! We had a great time, and it only took us(2 Adults) about an hour to see the whole museum. The museum no longer has a gift shop, which is a massive bonus for those of us that can't resist a good magnet!

Lots of fun. A kids museum for sure with lots of hands-on things to try and view. The history section was very interesting and good for adults. We did the scavenger hunt which we really enjoyed despite us all being adults! Front desk was happy to find us concession pricing. Also, very few of the hands-on things were broken which is better than many other kids museums around.

I took my children to the museum today overall we had a great time until Kitty Yerkes decided to speak to my children in a very disgusting manner. Then tried to laugh and joke it off as if I wasn’t a concerned parent instead of speaking with me she proceeded to speak to my under aged children and acted as if I was invisible .it made me feel very uncomfortable and unsatisfied with my trip I never experienced that until I’ve had an encounter with her .

After living in Wilmington since 2020, I finally brought my 7-year-old to the museum today. It's great! We were there for several hours and it kept us both entertained. It was so hands-on for the kids, too. I highly recommend it!

Museum is informative and very hands on for children. I brought my sons ages 5 and 3 years old and they enjoyed it. We spent several hours there, the only thing that kinda put a damper on the whole thing is the front desk/ticket lady with short blonde hair had a snarky attitude and huffed loudly because my children were walking a little fast to look at the giant sloth bones. She was just rude about her attitude. Especially because no one else was there, it was 2pm on a Tuesday.Either way I’m sure we will return again, especially because we homeschool and this is the perfect educational resource so close to home.

This museum devoted to the surrounding region. To non-locals, "Southeastern North Carolina" probably sounds kind of ridiculous; the only direction you're missing in there is west. But the region is distinctive culturally and ecologically and has an interesting history. The museum is a Smithsonian affiliate (there's more of these than you'd think), and there is an admission charge with a small discount for pretty much anything you'd expect a discount for. There are two floors and while it isn't giant, I spent more than an hour and rushed. The exhibitions are very interactive, and while this is kid-friendly, there are a lot of things an adult will get something out of. Topics covered include the colonial history of the era, the Civil War, environmental issues, and more. A video running ten minutes or so describes in somewhat nauseating fashion the history of Reconstruction-era Wilmington, including an armed white supremacist coup d'etat. Most visitors won't have my itinerary, but going from the conciliatory tone at Appomattox to here was jarring.Overall the exhibitions were detailed enough to be of interest. I didn't immediately kick myself for not visiting on prior trips to Wilmington, but on the lousy weather day I was here, I was satisfied with my decision to come and left with more questions to look into and a sense of nostalgia for the area.

Nicely appointed, a little of everything. History of Wilmington was quite educating. Shot out to Michael Jordan's display.

We went to this muesem for the first time when they hosted Dino Day last week. It was the most overwhelming place/experience I've ever been too and that's saying a lot. I've been to notoriously packed places like Disney. I was honestly completely taken aback by how many people were allowed to enter the building. You could barely move, hardly appreciate the activities they had set up because you either A) couldn't get to them because of the crowds B) didn't have enough room to complete the activity. Kids were in stimulation overload from the hundreds of body's bumping into them. I was disappointed and after about an hour, we couldn't take it anymore and left. The staff were incredibly nice, and I think we're trying their absolute best to make the most of the crowds. The facility looked fine from what little I could see but geared towards an older group of kids versus little toddlers, in my opinion. The experience was so rough but I'm sure it's nice one days where there are not events such as this. I hope they change the way events are executed in the future to make it more enjoyable.

I really enjoyed visiting this museum while in Wilmington. The main exhibits provide an excellent and thorough overview of the history of the region. I especially appreciated how much attention was paid to the problematic aspects of that history with regard to slavery and racial injustice, as so much of that was repressed in history books for too long. There were other exhibits (some temporary and others permanent) that I didn't have time to explore, but overall I was impressed with the quality and scope of this museum!
