In short, poor communication amongst the vet staff resulting in appallingly bad medical advice to patients. Not only does the animal’s health suffer, but it makes the vet staff look incompetent. After an 8-week debacle concerning my dog’s leg surgery my opinion of the vet staff is that they ARE incompetent & I no longer have faith in them nor do I trust them. Before the pandemic I never hesitated to bring my dogs here, but now NCSU’s vet hospital isn’t an option if I need specialized or emergency care for my pets. I live at most 10 minutes from this facility, but now I drive to Cary or Morrisville for specialized treatment.

?❌?? DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE!I took my dog in walking and left with her needing 2 hip surgeries. The lack of compassion and lack of any part of responsibility is atrocious.I took my 1yr 10month golden doodle to the orthopedic center to get an evaluation on my pets limbs (I waited 6 months for the appointment). I just wanted a baseline on her legs since she is a young dog and so I could do the best for her future. She got along just fine she could run, jump, walk but did sometimes shuffle a little when she would walk or was slow to get up after napping. They came in and did some movements with her and then took her away and said we will be back. 10 minutes later they brought me a hunched over dog who had urinated on herself with her leg messed up and had her hobble in. The way they handled this was appalling. They NEVER EVER discussed with me this was a possibility of something that could happen or I would not have let them do whatever they did to her.Apparently, during her range of motion exam her hip popped out of place. At first they thought it was her knee so they sedated her did X-rays and discovered it was her hip. I took her home that night and the other one did it too. However they handled my dog in the back they stretched her too far that now she has to have surgery on both her legs. They are taking zero accountability. My girl was a happy dog who is now unable to get up on her own, defecates on herself, is depressed and has suffered tremendous pain since this appointment. If I could give a negative number I would.

We paid our bill IN FULL after my dogs exam/appointment was done. Everything was fine. This was back in September. Now they are trying to charge me an additional 82 dollars. That is very sneaky! I paid in full I do not owe anything! This is unfair to do to clients, and dishonest.

My shih tzu, Lupita, needed emergency eye surgery over Thanksgiving. NC State had an ophthalmologist on call- Dr. Stonex- and my pup was able to get surgery within hours of her being admitted. The surgery was a success and I brought my baby home the next day. I don’t know what I would have done had they not been open. The staff was very helpful and very nice. Highly recommend NC State Vet School!

My dog was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his lower jaw. NC state Dental Vet explained the surgery option to us and gave us the confidence to follow through. The surgery was a success. Half of my dog’s lower jaw was removed and he has been cancer free ever since. Beyond thankful for the surgery team at nc state. Its been more than a year since the surgery and although it was expensive, it was worth every penny. NC State Vet is one of the best in the country!

Have a rooster with respiratory issues, open mouth breathing, lost his crow/voice over the last couple days. Told to go there at 10 am and to wait in the car since it could be infectious. Waited for 1.5 hours to be told the doctor took other cases. They didn't even bother to triage the bird. ANY type of animal with ANY respiratory symptoms should be triaged!!! Absolutely horrible service on the ER side. Would give it a zero but I can't.

If you are looking for an Internal Medicine Specialist - do not go to NCSU! It takes them 3-7 days to get back to you for questions and the desk people are completely clueless about everything. If you get assigned to Dr. Hixson - RUN! She will not listen to you, or your pet's symptoms, and does not send a discharge summary or medical report. She also said that it was okay for my dog to be overdosing on a medication and to get an additional disease because of it, on top of the several diseases he already has. There are a few ethical issues that were also very concerning with Dr. Hixson. It's sad that it's hard to find a doctor who truly cares about their patients these days. Just go straight to Blue Pearl Internal Medicine and don't waste your money at NCSU. They charge you an astronomical bill and make your dog overdose on medications.

Stay away from Behavioral Medicine!!! They are disorganized, incompetent, and overcharge for absolutely nothing!!!! They have not helped my dog one bit, but just continue wanting to schedule follow-ups. We received a non-itemized bill for $280 when we only had two virtual follow-ups in which they just asked how our dog is doing. THE SAME! Every time we see them it’s like starting all over again. Why did we have the initial intake then?! No organized plan or guidance. Just a complete mess. $1500 down the drain

The staff at the front desk are lovely, but this is how you are This hospital's priority was strictly money over the life of the animal. This was an unusual case. I following check-in:First you are brought to a room so they can take a history of the animal. Next you are asked how much you can pay. The person who takes the background information then speaks to the doctor. The docor then comes in and wants to talk dollars some more.We worked tirelessly and raised 8k for a cat's surgery in a matter of a days. Time was of the essence as the cat's jaw was locked, and she had not eaten in at least 6 days since we found her; she could only drink baby food and water.I was informed 8k was the high-end cost "estimate" noted on the NC State "cheat sheet" for jaw fractures. So I had a ballpark figure to work with in my head.I understood this was just an estimate and it may be slightly more as it is was not a fracture. When the doctir came in, it was abundantly clear he hadn't reviewed any material sent to the hospital previously, as he mentioned we only had one set of x-rays and no bloodwork. Bloodwork, two sets of x-rays, Fiv/Felv testing, Revolution and a bath had all been done to the cat previously, most within 24-48 hours. The paperwork was onhand. A doctor had identified an injury to the left TMJ joint, but the NC State doctor didn't find that sufficient and wanted to repeat everything, rather than running diagnostics that had not previously been done.To add insult to injury, the cat's jaw had been locked for almost a week, and she was running a fever of 105.6 (seizure level), and they are discussing flea treatments and baths with me. Hard to take them seriously at this point. I may not be a doctor, but I've been in rescue a long time and have seen a great deal.Because this case was unique, even the media had picked up her story. There was a great deal of public interest, but, sadly, no real interest by this hospital.I felt as though I were in a theater watching people rehearse their scripts. If I asked a question, I felt as if they were speaking to me like this was my first cat and I had just purchased it from Petsmart. I was furious the cat was so urgent and we were discussing baths and flea treatments; how belittling. These were of no consequence to me. In my opinion, these doctors should work at emergency pet hospitals for 2 years before being allowed to perform at this hospital so they gain some real-world perspective. My feelings and opinions aside, in the end they wanted $16-20k to open the cat's jaw. Provided no care to the animal, gave no options for treatment or recommendations, referrals. She was running a fever and losing the will to fight. I could no longer watch her suffer and starve. I put her down. NC State was my last hope, did NOT live up to their reputation. With a heavy heart, I had to inform, friends, family, donors, and the local media my experience and how large sums of money were valued over this cat's care.NC State Vetrinary Hospital is for the elite. Ordinary people need not apply.I would not recommend seeking treatment here. Find another hospital that values the life of the animal over large sums of money.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMALS HERE!!!! Caitlin Hepps Keeney charged my husband and I $800.00 and told us that our White Tufted Marmoset George Henry was actively dying! We were absolutely devastated! She became angry when I requested his records for a second opinion! Against her advice my husband and I went for that 2nd opinion!!!! Our sweet George Henry is doing great! He is now on antibiotics! He is eating and playing and running around being his loving self!!!!! He is NOT dying and his liver is NOT failing! So happy that God led us in the right direction and he is feeling better!

Thank you so much for a wonderful experience getting my boy sorted out between the emergency and cardiology department. Cardiology has helped us immensely before and they are a great group of people! The front desk and ER doctor were so friendly and kind. Thank you!!!!

May 1 2023 my beautiful lab Sadie happily celebrated her 14th birthday. If I had not pursued help outside of NCSU CVM she would not have survived to #13 in 2022.I brought her in to the NCSU emergency clinic on April 17 2022 and again on the 27th to be treated for apparent seizures that were followed by hours of extremely severe vertigo that rendered her totally immobile then days of less severe vertigo that affected her quality of life. On both occasions the attending veterinarians were great; they were attentive to Sadie, caring, looked at videos I’d taken, asked thorough questions about Sadie’s symptoms, environment and general health. She was “evaluated” by a neurology DVM the first visit by phone (it was late at night and they apparently only worked from 8am - 5pm) and the second time (I think) in person; I can’t confirm that because he wouldn’t speak to me directly. This is where the “ball was dropped” in regards to her care—by Neurology. On neither visit, but particularly the second, were her symptoms taken seriously. She was sent home with meclizine, no further testing, no neurology tests, no MRI, no other meds or help (me paying for everything wasn’t an issue). I begged the attending DVM to order further tests/MRI but she couldn’t order the neurology tests and the neurologist wouldn’t do it no matter the discussion. Why would he just send her home with no neuro testing, no solution…with no testing there couldn’t be any anything done to help her with/through the horrible episodes she was having. I was horrified and heartbroken. How could they send her home to just suffer and die… Sadie’s 13th birthday was coming up in three days from that 27 April visit; that’s old for a dog—especially old for a Lab. An active girl she’d been in excellent health and weight for her age. I (and other staff at the hospital) felt that the Neurologist that saw Sadie refused to order further testing because of her age. She’s old…why bother. Why take up the space… Thankfully our personal vet helped to get her into another vet hospital where she immediately received outstanding care, received the needed MRI and other testing so she could be properly diagnosed and treated. After proper care and treatment our girl had another great year with us doing the things she loves to do. I followed up with the NCSU CVM neurology department to ask why they dropped the ball. I did get a lame answer from a doctor basically placing blame on the CSRs at the front desk. What?! Ridiculous! Without my and our vet’s persistence our Sadie wouldn’t have survived to her 13th birthday much less her 14th. We are thrilled to have had another year with this beautiful amazing creature…no thanks to NCSU…
