Coates Auto Body has great customer service, but not so great attention to detail. I dropped my vehicle off to have repair work done, which included the replacement of trim pieces, blending, painting 3 body panels, and replacement of my front bumper among other things totaling nearly $6,000. Prior to picking up my vehicle, Coates called me asking about a skidplate for my catalytic converter; something I had purchased with my vehicle already installed (certified pre-owned from a local Toyota dealer, keep this in mind). When I told them that I purchased the vehicle with it on there and did not have a part number for them, whomever was on the phone did not do such a great job of hiding their displeasure with that fact. (They did eventually end up fixing the existing skidplate for what it’s worth). When I picked up my car, they had replaced the wrong wheel cover, leaving the broken one on, and replacing one that was not damaged in any way. They also failed to replace a trim piece that clearly did not sit flush and should have been replaced with everything else; my air temperature sensor (located in the grille area of my car) was not damaged in the accident, but when I picked my car up, it was dangling and the plastic mounting bracket was broken. There are runs in the clearcoat, and the paint matching on the front bumper is straight up unacceptable. As such, I do not trust Coates to touch my vehicle and will be taking it to another shop outside of insurance to have the issues with the paint work corrected. They did take care of the trim piece, wheel cover, and replaced my air temperature sensor, but I cannot in good conscience recommend them either.
In total I’ve probably spent 4 hours and ~200 miles in gas driving back and forth to Coates having to get them to fix their mistakes. Again, the customer service each time has been fine – but it would have been much nicer to not have to go back to the shop at all! It is a shame because we have had vehicles repaired at their former location on HWY 70 before it closed and were extremely happy.
Edit 8/20/24 in response to Coates
I gave you ample opportunities to inspect the vehicle. The customer should not be the one noticing everything that isn’t right, it should not have left the shop in the conditions I pictured. ?♂️
implying that *I* was the reason the trim piece was damaged is laughable and unprofessional.
Here’s a hint: You shouldn’t need to keep contacting me, *do the work right the first time*.
Your customer service is quite literally the only thing you have going for you as a business. I can see why there are reviews suggesting one go to the (now closed) location on 70.
Don’t take your car to Coates unless your insurance tells you to…and even then, I’d fight it. They will never come close to touching any of my family, friends, acquaintances, or my vehicles in the future.

Even though my car was totaled by the insurance company. The people that I worked with there were great. CJ was my estimator and gave me all the knowledge I needed.

Coats Auto body’s paint job was shockingly bad! I had to have it repainted by Larry Estes. The Coats job is on the right, Larry Estes’ paint job is on the right.
I paid my $500 deductible in the office before I saw the van, so when I pointed out the bumper was painted the wrong color and that the texture was like orange peel, they did not seem to care. They said “Bumpers don’t always match after repairs.” They then made other unproductive excuses. They then billed Nationwide for the other thousand dollars.
Since I did not want my van to look like crap I took my van to Larry Estes Auto body in Garner. Larry Estes removed the orange peel and correctly matched the Honda celestial Blue color for about $600 in total. I highly recommend Larry Estes!

Sadly not my first review, however, this place continues to provide excellent and friendly service. I’ve had my car serviced about 4 times now and they never disappoint. Every human you speak to is knowledgeable, professional, and courteous. It helps greatly in an already stressful situation.

Great work done on two of my cars that were both in fender benders recently. Can be a little slow getting work done, but the quality is worth the wait.

One of the best auto repair experiences I have had in my sixty some years of existence. They replaced a door and windshield and did so on a timely basis. They handled the insurance claims and car rental. Repairs took two weeks and was done on schedule. I received constant text messages updating the progress of the repairs. If you need your car repaired, this is the place!
