Received a store credit at the end of the season last year because something we bought didn’t fit. They don’t have a computer system or official gift cards, so store owner’s son wrote the credit amount with his signature on the receipt. There was no exportation date indicated, just the amount credited to be used for future. Returned to the store this season while down at our beach house only to find out the building had been sold and they were having a closing sale and wanted to go ahead and use the store credit since they are going out of business. Picked out several things that well exceeded the credit amount and handed the store credit voucher assuming there would be no issue. Despite being signed by her own son, the owner questioned the voucher and it’s validity as if we’d tried to pull a fast one. It’s not our fault you don’t have a legit computer system or proper tracking. What a joke but thank goodness they are closing.

I had a good experience at Salty's. I specifically requested a non-foam longboard and they accommodated. Came with decent single traditional longboard fin, leash, and wax, which is better than most rental shops that skimp on such/only carry foam boards. Very fair rental rates. Looked like they had decent retail shopping stuff available. Prime location right in front of the only good surf in OIB, at least as far as I know. I scored some fun clean waist-high days there righr off pier, although had to sit in no-surf zone to get the nugz rolling through, but did not get hassled. Staff was...well...a little Salty, esp in comparison to Progression Surf down the road whom were very friendly but didn't have any non-foam longboard rentals...nice enough to refer me to Salty's in that regard. Anyway, I'd rent from Salty's again.

Went in to the store to look at some sun glasses, owner walked up to me and asked if I had taken glasses!? I obviously pointed out the ones I tried on and he said I took another pair!? Awful behavior and took the situation way too far. Awful.

I've been coming here for 10+ years. The store's location is beyond ideal for a surf shop, located right on the beach, on the main drag, and directly beside the public OIB pier-- so it's a shame they've wasted the perfect opportunity for a successful business. On the upper level they have a surf shop with swimsuits, t-shirts, sandals, SPF, boogie boards & surfboards, etc. It's a pretty cute store up top & I can always find something I want, but usually the high prices keep me from giving in. Down below they have an arcade & a little storefront that sells snacks and a few lunch foods. I know for certain that the food is very subpar, but my guess is their location is what's kept them open for so long , being the closest food option to those sweaty & dehydrated on the beach. I've never seen the arcade have anyone in it other than maybe 2 kids at a time, which says a lot as it's the only arcade on the island. This place seems so wholesome on the surface and picture perfect for a small town surf shop. But the reason for one star rating is the staff and customer service. The surf shop is run by two individuals, an older woman and a younger man, both of which seem to be extremely corrupt & greedy. They are always very very rude & disrespectful to customers, even in front of other customers. They swindle people out of their money in every situation they can, especially with their rentals. DO NOT RENT WATER EQUIPMENT FROM THEM, especially surf boards. It's overpriced for the beat up boards you'll get, and then they'll "forget" to come pick them up or claim you never dropped them off & wrongfully charge you 2-3 extra days. Do not ignore the other poor ratings, theres a reason they're going out of business. Save your time and money and go down to the ground level of Surf Unlimited or even OIB Kahuna for your surfboard needs.

Some guy at the surf shop apparently didn’t know how to rent a kayak and we drove an hour out of our way after talking to a lady on the phone about the kayaks we were gonna rent. She said as long as we were there by 4 pm. We showed up at 2 pm and completely wasted our time because they didn’t hold their word

Absolutely trash. We drive an hour to rent kayaks because they said if we get there by 4:00 they would rent them. We get there at 2:15 and he said the girl already left and he don’t or can’t rent them because he said he has to leave at 4 sharp and she wouldn’t answer her phone. I recommend to every one to not waste your time or money. The guy acted like we were inconveniencing his day. As a tourist I recommend stay far away

My limited experience with this place sucked and would never purchase or rent from them in the future. Needed to top off my bike tires and they wouldn't do it. Gave me the run around twice.

Cool shop, you can see the ocean while you shop. I bought my first pair of Hey Dudes and love them! I will be back!

Online orders were placed and cancelled without notice ;( Salty was not willing to haven’t ordered replaced as they “don’t take phone orders” and the website was “overwhelmed.”Small business support is essential to a family run business that is home to 10 employees but when i am not treated with dignity or valued as a supporter, it makes me want to shop elsewhere…..

If I could give less than a star I would. Website boasts free delivery if you spend over $100. I spent well over $100 renting 5 bikes for a week. I placed the rental order with our address one week before delivery, never once did they call me to tell me they would not deliver to our address, which was in Ocean Isle Beach but not specifically on the island. On the day of delivery, I’m then told they won’t deliver and we needed to pick up. I asked where it states this on their site and the woman I spoke with was rude and could not tell me where on the website. She was wrong and knew she was wrong so she claimed they were busy and hung up on me. So very disappointed in the service. The bikes were a rusty old mess too, so I wouldn’t recommend the product either. In hindsight, I wish I would have read some of the other reviews before doing business with this company. They are not fit to be in the service industry.
