I had stopped in this salon a couple of times to purchase different Aveda hair products, desperately trying to "fix" my sad hair. During one of the visits, the owner, Linda, began chatting with me and kindly suggested a line that would be a better match for my hair specifically. She was kind and full of knowledge. She continued to explain so much to me about my hair, its condition, and how to have it cut so it could heal and become the hair I wanted. I took her advice on the product change and set up an appointment for a new cut and color.
It was the best decision I have made in a long time. I felt like a new person! My hair is on the mend, I use less products than ever, and it is so easy to manage now. Every time I visit, I learn something new.
I love the salon. It is professional and clean, yet I intimate. It has a lovely, relaxing atmosphere and I always feel better when I leave than when I came in. The products used and offered are top notch in my book. They are healthy, clean, good for people, and good for the planet. I realize this may sound over the top gushy, but I have had such a wonderful experience here that I just wanted to share.
Linda truly loves what she does. She is genuinely compassionate and has an amazing wealth of knowledge in what she does and the products she offers, and she is happy to share it. ?

If you're in search of a hairdresser who not only possesses impeccable skill but also radiates warmth and wisdom, look no further than Linda.Linda's knowledge of hair care is unparalleled. Linda, the owner of Shear Genius, colored, cut and styled my hair. It looked fantastic, and provided a relaxing and pleasant experience. She is a skilled and caring professional.

Linda is a delight and brought life back to my hair. Her salon is beautiful, she taught me a lot about my hair and the products I was using, and made sure I was comfortable with moving forward with her recommendations. I'm looking forward to my next visit!Services: Blowdry

I see my post has been removed so I just wanted to briefly say again I would not recommend this business at all. The owner was very rude and not professional at all. Went in for a simple trim and she said my hair was damaged and proceeded to take four to five inches off with me turned not facing the mirror. I know what damaged hair looks like and feels like being a previous hairdresser back in Virginia. Not quite halfway through the haircut I walked out with my hair unfinished. Had I let her finish I wouldn't have half the hair I do now.Service: Haircut

I had the best experience with Linda yesterday and her “shear genius”. I am much more informed about the science behind hair care. She took the time to not only explain the science but also put me on the right path to healthy hair! I love my new cut! I love having all this information she shared! I feel informed and knowledgeable! Thank you, Linda for sharing so very much!Service: Haircut

I am writing this review a month out from my haircut. The cut looks as good now as on the first day. I went there without a clue what could be done with my mop of hair. Linda gave me a great cut that has grown out beautifully. The shop itself has a calm, friendly atmosphere.I left there thrilled with the experience. The cut remains fabulous. The product recommended is just perfect for my hair. I have found my salon and stylist!Service: Haircut

I came in for a long layer haircut. When I got there, my hair was down to the middle of my back as it has been all my life. The owner Linda promptly informed me she didn’t have the time to blow dry or style my hair for my scheduled appointment. She cut my hair for 15 minutes tops. I took my glasses off while she cut but even with my blurry vision. It seemed like a lot. I asked are you cutting like 6 inches?! Linda said I don't do measurements, I'm just cutting off the damaged hair. I said AGAIN I just want long layers. When Linda was done, I put my glasses back on and my hair was shoulder length wet. I was shocked. I said I can't believe how short you cut my hair. Also when it dries, it it will be even shorter. I said it's too short to even put it in a ponytail. Linda's response was I can show you how and that she's been doing this for 47 years. Maybe it's time to call it a day. Linda charged me $75 which included a diatribe of how awful my hair is for using at home hair products clearly pining for an up-sell of her products. By the way, I don't blow dry, curl or flat iron my hair, use Matrix shampoo & conditioner and color my roots at home. My hair was far from beyond repair requiring a full hacking. Like I said over and over again, I came in to get a long layered hair cut. Now I have a short friar boy's hair don't. BEWARE

I have never written a Yelp review but am writing this as a public service announcement. Kerry L. is absolutely correct. I read her review before my visit and figured well, it couldn't be that bad. Turns out, it is. I asked for long layers & took off my glasses for the cut. Linda began that she had no time to blow dry or style for my scheduled appointment. When I got there, my hair was down to the middle of my back as it has been all my life. She cut my hair for 15 minutes tops. During the cut with my blurry vision, I asked are you cutting like 6 inches?! Linda said I don't do measurements, I'm just cutting off the damaged hair. I said AGAIN I just want long layers. By the way, I don't blow dry, curl or flat iron my hair, use Matrix shampoo & conditioner and color my roots at home. My hair was far from beyond repair requiring a full hacking. Like I said over and over again, I came in to get a long layered hairdo. Now I have a short friar boy's hair don't. BEWARE UPDATE: Linda left me a voicemail saying she "did the best i could with what I had." Offered me $15 back. That's not the point. I don't even want $75 back. Keep it. This is not a post for a price break. It literally is a PSA.

I've been a customer of Shear Genius for about four years, and could not be happier with the results. Linda's skills absolutely rival those I've found in top-rated salons in the bigger cities. She has excellent technical ability, but also the aesthetic of a genuine artist. I'm always thrilled with how my style turns out. Also, my hair has never been in better condition and neither has the quality and longevity of my hair color. The salon's full line of Aveda products keep my color from fading or going brassy between visits, and it's worth every penny to not have that couple of weeks of bad hair leading up to the next appointment. There isn't a better salon in the Outer Banks.

My visit to this salon was the absolutely the worst experience I have ever had. To start Linda was less than friendly...should have walked out then! Instead I gave her a chance and said i wanted long layers. needless to say they were shorter than what i wanted. My hair wont even stay behind my ear! I told her to stop and not to finish!

I hade the worst experience at the salon getting my haircut. I actually took the cape off and walked out before she was finished she was told to cut very long layers in my hair and 5 in later I can barely pull it back and get it in a ponytail. I told her I would pay for what Little work she did and asked her how much she said $50 for long hair.. that's a joke she didn't even finish the haircut nor is a haircut that takes 10 minutes worth $50.

My first haircut post COVID. I was really looking forward to it. It has been a long time since I have gotten my hair cut so I was expecting that I would have some damage. I don't know how to express how she made me feel. While the cut was good and she said I "would feel much better after the cut the improve the damage" to my hair - 18 month since my last cut - my hair felt better but my self esteem took a beating.Technical skills are great but attitude and customer service are just as important. Hate to say it but I went to my car fighting back tears.
