I went to the Outer Banks YMCA to explore membership options. I was warmly greeted by Donna and Sharon, and my first impression could not have been better. They were personable and informative. I joined immediately. Thank you Donna and Sharon for the warm hospitality

The lady at the front desk is always rude and condescending. She acts as if she owns the YMCA and treats me as if I am not a paying member. According to the mission statement, the Y is supposed to be caring with Christian morals and unfortunately I have yet to experience this side of her. I’ve never ever had this type of experience at the Currituck YMCA.

I needed post a review after a great experience at this y on vacation. The whole facility has been wonderful to visit, and the staff are so nice! We bought a week pass which was some of the best money we spent on vacation. We are Y members at home and completely understood the fee and she explained how busy it could be if they took our membership this time of year. It’s not a big place. I read some of the other reviews and peoples angry annd always expect something for nothing. The front desk Karen was so nice getting our pass done and seemed to understand my kids are nuts and we wanted to hurry. We left the beach because the waves were getting too rough for my little kids and I’m sure we looked insane dragging 4 kids through the door. The outside pool manager Sam came to check on us when my youngest was upset crying about the lifejacket my husband had chosen off the rack because he could not have his float which is so nice to have especially since we were on vacation. Our y at home doesn’t offer those. She talked to him so sweetly about why lifejackets are a good to wear and took his hand and walked him over to their rack to pick one out himself and he found one of the ones that goes across his chest and arms with a turtle on it and made sure it fit and we had to promise to buy one at home to get him to leave it there! She was so calm. We ended up having a really great family day. I wanted to hug her because the day could have ended up different. And the pool and the lifeguards was so nice and seemed really good at their jobs! We went back a few days and my son always went to find the lifejacket. My husband works out too and went to the gym and said it was small and busy but the weights were really good but he had a question and had to go to the front desk to ask because there was not a person working in the gym he could find to ask. He had to wait because they were really busy which interrupted his workout while he was in the zone. The y ended up being a great part of our vacation and we wish we could take it home to where we live. I hope we can come back to Nags Head next summer.

Nice weight room. But good grief, went there 2 days, different rude old gals at front desk. Oh, and they closed the....indoor...pool for 2 days due to lightning 12 miles away. The indoor pool.

This location does not recognize nation wide membership from may 1 -sept 1 so they want you to pay 10$ for a day pass. Support local businesses people before you give a cooperation more money on top of what you are already paying for a membership. There are a few local gyms that have better equipment and cheaper daily and weekly prices!!

Only leaving a review because the women at the front desk were incredibly rude throughout my ENTIRE experience. Rude and condescending from the beginning, which I ignored, then started rushing me out multiple times 15 minutes to close (I left 5 minutes before they locked the doors). One of them huffed their breath and said “you need to hurry up”, and continued to complain and groan because she couldn’t lock the doors early.
The other employees working were very polite and friendly, but I could not believe this location hired such rude people at the front desk. Sets a negative experience before you even get to the gym. I have worked customer service, so I understand having a bad day, but this is unacceptable.

This is the worst gym experience I have ever had. I tried to go to the gym today and was talked down to by the older ladies at the front desk. They were extremely rude and told me my membership wouldn’t work there and practically kicked me out. Neither of them should ever be in customer service let alone have a job. They are the rudest YMCA employees I have met as most are very kind people. I will not be visiting this terrible place again.

I have an expensive YMCA membership i purchase because it can be used anywhere. this Y charges $10 dollars for MEMBERS in state because it's a "destination". Absolutely insane.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the lady at the front desk should not be the first impression of your rec center. She IS rude and condescending. As soon as I walked in she sighed and made me feel like an inconvenience. Please put her somewhere else in your business or she’ll continue to drive away business. We did not buy the family pass because of her.

Member for over 10 years. I primarily use the indoor pool and workout room. I’ve always been very happy with the facility upkeep and friendly staff. Also thankful that there are Y’s all over the country that I can visit while traveling. I’ll remain a lifelong member

Pretty rude, guess I "just missed" making the cut for getting a discount on the $63.99 membership plan. It's a shame I was really interested in joining

When I first joined this place, I was quite excited. It seemed like a welcoming environment and it has a basketball court, good enough exercise floor, sauna, hot tub, pool, racquet ball courts, etc. It is also very clean (shout out to Lonnie!).
However, after regularly going over the last few months, I have noticed some things that led me to cancel my membership and move elsewhere.
#1 There is a woman that works at the front desk that is absolutely unfit for the job. She is rude, condescending, and unknowledgeable about the gym. She is referenced in many other reviews and it's a mystery that she still has a job or at least has one that faces the public. While I do know her name (no, it's not Karen as another review mentioned ?), I will show some respect and not share that here. It is unfortunate that she spoils the vibe of the staff because everyone else that works here has been AWESOME but the way she speaks to guests is insulting and the complete opposite of how a front desk manager should be.
#2 The hours are pretty horrible. Not only do they close at 8 on weekdays, they're always closing 15 mins early. I've had the lady I just referenced interrupt my workouts to tell me that I need to get my stuff from the locker room at 7:45. I was planning on being done before 8 but she insisted that is the time when her staff needed to be out of the door. If you close at 8, we shouldn't have to leave the locker room by 7:45. In addition to that, on Sundays the facility doesn't open until 1:00 because of the church service that is held there. That isn't a problem because it is a Christian organization and I respect that BUT I paid additional for a 24/7 pass which I was told grants me access 24/7 to the weight floor. This is true besides all of Sunday morning until 1:00. I was not informed of this important aspect when I upgraded my account to 24 hour access over the phone. On top of that, the short hours on Sunday make the place extremely crowded.
#3 I love that this is a family facility but I am not happy with how children are not supervised on the weight floor. I have seen many young children do things like run with their siblings on the same treadmill, interfere with people carrying or lifting heavy weights, and run around in tight areas that cannot handle additional obstacles for people exercising. Most of the time their parents are on the other side of the facility not paying any attention to them and the staff doesn't do anything about it either.
With that all being said, I hope this place can succeed and continue to improve. It's a valuable part of our community. I suppose that is why I am taking the time to voice my complaints.

I've lived all over the country and belonged to a dozen different health clubs. This place is great! And the staff is excellent!

Been traveling lately so I have been to a number of YMCA’s in NC and Hampton Roads VA. This one in Nags Head is definitely my fave! Great, friendly staff, gorgeous, well maintained pool, locker rooms and fitness rooms. I’m going back every day I’m in the OBX!
