Jonny, Charlie, Luke and Debbie are absolutely the best. Friendly, knowledgeable and safety conscious. They are excited for you, with you and keep that great feeling the whole time. They communicate with you and respond to calls and texts. The whole operation is top notch. My wife and I are going back next year again. Cant wait!!

My family had a reservation for the hang gliding school today. They all around had fun flying. Unfortunately one member had a fairly negative experience with their instructor David. Three people from my family were in the group - a female weighing 230, a male weighing 235, and another male weighing 240. Kitty Hawk Kites Flying School does have a suggested weight limit of 235, based on ability. This flight instructor was incredibly rude to only the female member from my family and had a very condescending attitude toward her abilities. This individual is a very athletic and capable person who happens to be overweight - this also describes at least one of the men in the group. However they had a fine experience. My family member was reduced to tears on the sand dune and only took two flights out of her five paid for flights due to David’s attitude. My recommendation if you do want to go hang gliding is to not book with David if you happen to be female.

We rented sand boards, and it was awesome. It's hard though, for sure. We didn't get the binding type boards, I assumed it wouldn't move like a snowboard and the rest of my family just needed something easy. It was hard. Basically even with the wax they give you it still barely moves on the shallow slopes, and then once you get it moving you can't do much and you just hope you don't catch an edge in the sand, but you will anyway. There just isn't any way to control the board because your feet aren't stuck to it. Also, you need to keep the front edge up or it'll dig in so lean more to the back and use the cord to help pull up the front. If you go out there just expecting to do something unique that you probably won't do again, it'll be fun and worth it. Also, bring lots of water, it's bigger than you think and it's hard to walk, and the sand can be really hot on your feet.

Great experience and a lot of fun.
They give you step by step instructions for gliding, and stay with you the entire time.
3 hours for a beginner course and gliding "flew" by.

Yesterday, I did the tandem mile high hang gliding flight. There were some small poofy clouds & Charlie (my pilot & temporarily most importent person in my life) and I reached the bottom of them. Too bad we couldn't fly through them! It was cold up there & I was glad that I had worn warm layers. The view up there was spectacular! Yes, I've been in airplanes, but it's very different when you're flying in just a glorified kite! Charlie was great! He showed me how to steer & offered to do some aerobatics (my stomach said no to that!). Sometimes, I held my arms forward in Super Kathy position and sometimes to the side in eagle position, but mostly I held my handles so I could better see forward. At first, it was a full body workout as my hands were in a death grip & every muscle was tensed, but when I relaxed everything, it worked much better. I had so many emotions, though not fear, flying through my head that I needed the rest of the day to process through them. It was a thoroughly satisfying adventure! I want to do it again when we come back next year!

We went hang gliding for my birthday and it was an awesome experience. It felt freeing to feel like I was flying for a few moments. We will definitely be back again.

We tried to go hang gliding here twice and both times weather failed us. They would warn us at the beginning that perhaps it may be too windy to go. Then they would go through the safety demonstration but each time, it was too windy and we wouldn't be able to go. They offered vouchers or refunds.

Had a special time hang gliding at jockey's ridge. Staff was amazing. Everyone was very knowledgeable. You have to do it if you come to the OBX.

We had to try four times to fly, because weather was not our friend, and the wait was worth it. We did the beginner lesson, which included a brief ground school, and then heading out to the dunes where there were wings waiting for us. Everyone takes turns flying, and gets 1:1 attention from an instructor the whole time you’re flying and prepping to fly. These beginner flights are brief and relatively low - probably 10-15 seconds and 5-15 feet off the ground - which makes it a very safe and easy start for anyone who’s nervous. We found ourselves asking how to do even more.Kids are welcome and get the same lesson and attention as everyone else. The youngest and smallest children got two instructors. They seem to be too light to make the physics really work, so instructors would run them down the hill to give them a ride, it was truly adorable.Because we got cancelled a few times for bad wind conditions (too low and you can’t fly, too high and you fly a little too much), we got to meet a lot of the instructors. They are all lovely, friendly people, laid back but serious about safety, and seemed to genuinely enjoy sharing their sport with us. They were all super encouraging - and comforting for the nervous folks, although there weren’t many of those - and gave great feedback after every flight, so you could adjust and do better. The hang gliding itself is not super physically demanding, especially once you’re in the air. However, there is a 10 or so minute trek out to the dune, which is entirely on very soft sand and partially up a very steep hill of soft sand. If you can manage that, you’ve got the rest of it!Oh and this is a really small detail but we really appreciated it. For all Kitty Hawk Kites activities, you get a confirmation email telling you exactly where to go, what to wear, and what to bring. Very helpful.

My husband was the one hang-gliding as I'm pregnant, but I was still able to come along and watch, and it was a great time! The instructors are incredible and really make the experience. Great for kids and adults!
