Came the evening before to meet with the homeless program. Went inside and asked about boxed dinners that are provided to others while in the emergency room. Emergency said to see AOD. AOD then said to talk to the emergency room. So it was back and forth. Not to mention after going back to AOD was told that people were abusing it so they stopped and is only for patients. So your going to let veterans starve and be hungry? Totally ridiculous especially after spending close to an hour waiting for AOD to come back to their desk. No veteran should be homeless or be HUNGRY.

I SHYED AWAY FROM VA HEALTH CAR FOR MANY YEARS, AFTER MY FIRST FEW EXPERIENCES, IN NEW YORK! A FRIEND SAID TRY THEN AGAIN, ITS NOT LIKE THE 70s ANYMORE. SO, NOW LIVING IN NORTH CAROLINA, I CHECKED IT OUT. STARTING WITH MY NEW PC DOCTOR IN THE CLAYTON VA CLINIC, TO CARE AT THE DURHAM VAMC. IT WAS LIKE A NIGHT AND DAY EXPERIENCE! AWESOME EXCELLENT SERVICE AND CARE FROM ALL MEDICAL STAFF! MANY CONCERNS WERE GIVEN A HIGH PRIORITY ER, OR PROCEDURAL STATUS! ESPECIALLY WHEN I TOLD THE THEM ABOUT MY CIVILIANS, DR. CARE. THE KIND OF CARE I HAD ONLY PREVIOUSLY SAW WHILE SERVING 18 YEARS IN THE 808th STATION HOSPITAL, IN NEW YORK!WE WERE ALL LIKE FAMILY, AND THATS HOW WE TREATED PATIENTS.NOTHING BUT GREAT MEMORIES OF MY SERVICE!

Pharmacy department is horrible! I don't understand how easy they make it for you to refill but hard just to get an update on the prescription being filled! You have to call, give your full SSN, first and last...then your middle name, full address (street, city, state & zip code), they ask what medication you are asking about then finally what is it that you are calling about! Super frustrating when I called the day before, did the same run down just to be told that the medication is STILL pending! Why must I keep calling to figure out what is going on with meds that my pcm called in, not me?! I do not live close, it would really upset me if I drove all the way there for 2 days straight for the same response. Just horrible all around! Needs a better system!

Update: Waited weeks for a death certificate that turned out to be incorrect and paid for 10 that I can’t use, left messages with the Dr. Sweeney and his nurse Catherine, who said it would be fixed, waited another few weeks and just received another incorrect death certificate, so now I’ve left another message for him; let’s see how long it takes to get a correct death certificate…I feel bad for all veterans that have no choice but to come to the VA system for help. There is a lack of empathy all the way around. I mean, what kind of person/director calls a veteran’s family after the veteran has died and leaves a message singing good morning? A psycho, that’s what kind. My dad just died and you’re singing good morning on his voicemail and requesting to speak with his wife who died 6 years prior. That’s how sorry they were that he passed. The man also called the wrong contact info and made no attempt to find correct info. I had to track this guy down myself after gaining access to the veterans VM. My impression of him did not get any better- to the point that I don’t even want them to touch my dad, for anything. And if they don’t want to help veterans families, then I don’t want their help; which is probably the goal. Well, they win.

The most shameful example of medical care I've seen the mental health department is a cesspool.

My father has been coming to the Durham, NC VA Hospital for years. He has had excellent care. His providers are knowledgeable and friendly and above all, all staff are very respectful. Numerous people thank him for his service. I have even noticed that VA staff tries very hard to not overtake slow-walking or elderly veterans and try to maintain a respectful distance when they are trying to get to where they are going. Everyone is very helpful and will ask if you need help finding where you are headed. We just arrived back home after another ER visit, and once again, the experience was “nice,” if you can use the term for an emergency visit.

Extremely long wait times for appointments. Poor nursing attention during onset of diagnosis and treatment.

This is one of the best VA hospitals I have been to. You are treated with respect.

Absolutely the worst. Will cancel an appointment with no heads up. If you’re lucky enough to get someone to answer the phone, they’ll give you the runaround. You’ll never get a call back from anyone. Tried subjecting me to unnecessary testing. I’ve transferred to Fayetteville due to the poor experiences with this hospital. This hospital is the embodiment of the VA’s reputation of being the place you go when you’re ready to die.

I live in Dallas and receive tremendous care at the VA facility here. For the past few years, part of that care has been to help me overcome the lingering consequences of a serious back injury. The physical therapists at VA Durham are recognized nationally for a program they administer for vets in my ¹condition. Recently my participation in that program was elevated and I have weekly phone conversations with a therapist there. This has been very productive and I am grateful to have this resource.Durham should be proud to have this expertise in your community. I know we military types like to complain -- about the chow lines, the hurry up and wait, the paperwork and more. Accountability is important, but so is so is recognizing achievement and having each other's back.My exposure to your system is limited to this one clinic and it is superb. For those who are dissatisfied, I hope it gets better for you. Perhaps you should honestly contimplate the alternative and you may realize you have it pretty good. At least that's been my experience.

The people that work here are incredibly incompetent. I'm not sure if it's a lack of training or what but this whole place needs to get built back from the ground up with all new employees. This VA is exactly how back the news describes them.

I had a scheduled appointment for my CPAP machine with a tech. It was found my machine was over 5 years old so they just ordered me a new one – fantastic! I had woke up that morning with red in my eye, so I went to the Eye Clinic. They saw me very quickly and determined is was a broken blood vessel and no treatment was necessary other than lubricating eye drops. Since I had a coughing and shortness of breath for the week prior, I decided to get checked in the ER. I was seen promptly and after a round of tests/x-rays it was determined I did not have Covid, flu & RSV. Blood test did NOT show any problem with anemia, heart attack, electrolyte problems, kidney problem or blood clot. Xray did NOT show pneumonia. They recommended that I take whole thick honey & Tussin DM at night to aid in sleeping. Everyone I contacted was friendly, happy and professional. The total time in the facility was less than 4 hours. What a fantastic experience at this VA facility.
