Insanely too crowded. Most machines are taken, and lots of people are waiting for it.

Overall pretty average weightlifting equipment, coming from a smaller Golds Gym I still notice myself wanting to use equipment that the DOWD doesn't have. It's pretty crowded during the classic "busy" times. Overall pretty clean, and the amenities are great. I would give the amenities like steam room, sauna whirlpool, swimming pools, a 3.5 out of five stars and the weightlifting equipment a 2.5 out of five stars to average my review. SUGGESTION: I really really wish they would extend the hours, not for the whole gym but just at least for the weightlifting section. It doesn't have to be 24/7 but on Sunday it's only open 12-6 and sometimes that's difficult for me and others to make.

Has sooooo much you can do. Love that yoga and yoga is free just by being a member. Great customer service for the most part

Whirlpool, Showers, Steam Room need work This is not the standard Dowd Y once maintained. A lot of cost saving going on. Really miss the lunch service that left about 5 years ago.

If I could give 0 stars I would. The saunas never go above 155 which is baffling to me. The point of a sauna is to be hot. Crowded gym, lack of parking and rude staff and members. Overall this is the worst gym I have ever been to. On top of that you have to give a 30 day notice to cancel a month to month membership.

the only place in town where 4 wall Handball is played. I moved to Charlotte in 1979 because of the Handball program. There were about 125 players then with many tournaments around for competition. Now? There are about a dozen active Handball players. Still hitting ball today.

The cleaning lady harasses the gym patrons. Beautiful Gym despite occasional thievery. My locker has been robbed twice However I was promptly contacted by management who helped me resolve the situation. Thank you. The staff here is super helpful and friendly. Different work out areas insure you’ll never have a boring workout. Update: my locker has been stolen from again despite management increasing staff presence in the locker rooms. Hopefully you will have a better experience here than I have

I've been training for about 10 years at this point, and I can honestly say that out of the 20+ gyms that I've been a member/guest at, this gym is the most toxic workout environment I've ever seen. This is going to sound really obnoxious, but for the people out here trying to get an actual workout in, it will make absolute sense. Let's start with the young crowd: Love to see kids getting an early start to their fitness journey, but the amount of filming and setting up film equipment in the way of other guests is out of control and too cringy. Today I witnessed someone with absolutely no muscle on their bones shoo someone out of their video so they can go back to their pointless movements and then flex in the camera. Now let's talk about the old crowd: Again, love to see it and it's necessary to keep moving your body at that age to enjoy freedom of movement as long as possible. BUT... most of the old men sit on the machines and do the lightest weight possible while staring down every single pair of yoga shorts within a 1-mile radius. Then, there are the old guys on TRT... honestly, they're getting after it, keep it up! Pretty much everyone else I see is in there making the best use of their time, but it is simply too busy for the amount of members they allow in the gym at once. If you go before 8am or after 5pm, I can promise you my first born with absolute confidence that you WILL NOT get a good workout... even on Sundays of all days to train. Bottom line is there are waaaaaay too many members at this gym and it makes everyone visibly uncomfortable because the aforementioned groups routinely line up as many pieces of equipment and benches as possible. If there were any other gyms nearby as nice as the Dowd that I could walk to, I would without hesitation. Not to mention the vast disparity in membership prices. For example, my friend and I both make the same amount of money yet their membership costs $40/month whereas somehow I got stuck paying $70/month. That's alot of money to not be able to use the gym.

Priciest gym in the city AND No towel service, lack of equipment, non-working amenities, Covid hours, horrible parking and all at a whopping $80 a month. You can get a much better experience than this at almost any other gym in Charlotte more than half the price . There are too many members to only have 1 type of machine each. Steam room has been “down” going on 4 months??? At this point I don’t even think they’ve scheduled someone to look at it. TOUR OTHER GYMS IN CHARLOTTE BEFORE YOU SIGN HERE TRUST ME!!!

They had everything I needed ... and plenty more. Very clean. Only thing was it took awhile to get a parking space. I will definitely come back and get a good workout on the rooftop gym.

Make it impossible to just cancel my membership. Need a 30 day notice to cancel a month by month membership. Always packed. Equipment is average. It's $80 dollars!?!?

This gym is the crown jewel of not just ymca's nationwide, but of all gyms Nationwide. Having trained clients at gyms all over the US... this gym has become my home base. The mens and women's locker rooms each have 2 steam rooms and 2 dry saunas. There are 4 massive floors of top notch equipment

Cockroach in the sauna. Told the front desk ladies, they giggled and said it was a palmetto bug (which is a cockroach). Not that big of a deal but if I pay $80 a month I’d prefer there not to be bugs. Would appreciate a little courtesy and at least pretend they care.

Their customer service is poor. They used to be the greatest facility in Charlotte. Their staff knows their schedule have changed for less hours to members but they don’t care and will tell you in a rude way. Today Saturday I took 6 minutes after they closed (close time 6pm). I have been a member for many years (they used to close at 7pm before Covid). This lady by the name of Angela in a very rude way came in to the ladies room and told me that I needed to leave at 6:06pm I was almost done and I told her the issue I had that took me a few minutes longer, she didn’t care and in a very loud voice she told me “no reason why to stay after 6pm”I asked her name, and her ID# or last name, and told me “Angela” but she is not a police officer to have a number. At that point I decided to walk out of the facility, she kept talking as I was walking out in a loud voice and kept raising her voice at the end she told me to have a nice day in a sarcastic, rude, and unprofessional way. YMCA should hire people that have some high education and professional skills. As a member for many years I am very disappointed with their staff service. She was rude, talking over me. The staff was seating at the entrance. They are witness of all this rude and unprofessional behavior. I will follow up with corporate and update this post.
