Love the staff, always helpful. The handicap room is still a bit tough for my grandmother to navigate. The chef does a great job managing meals and really enjoyed the intimate eating areas near the conference room. Not our typical area but due to the hurricane, we got to enjoy a switch up.

Just returned from my first visit to the Haw River state park. I’ve been trying to find a place to walk my little dog that’s shady and a loop.( if we do an out and back he slows to zero on the return ). The Piedmont trail was perfect! 1.4 mile loop, 90% shade, and well marked! If you want to walk in these 90 degree temperatures, I highly recommend.

Haw River State Park: A Gem in North Carolina's Natural Landscape #### Introduction Located in the northern part of North Carolina, the Haw River State Park is a serene and diverse natural area that provides a wealth of opportunities for outdoor recreation, environmental education, and wildlife observation. Covering over 1,400 acres, the park is nestled within the scenic Piedmont region and is characterized by its rich biodiversity, including hardwood forests, wetlands, and the meandering Haw River. Established in 2003, the park has quickly become a cherished resource for both local residents and visitors from afar, offering a peaceful retreat and a place to connect with nature. #### Natural Features and Biodiversity Haw River State Park is home to a variety of ecosystems that support a wide range of plant and animal species. The park's namesake, the Haw River, winds through the landscape, creating lush riparian habitats. These areas are vital for numerous species of birds, fish, and other wildlife. The river's clean waters are a haven for aquatic life, including several species of fish and amphibians. The park's forests are primarily composed of mixed hardwoods, such as oak, hickory, and maple, interspersed with stands of pine. This mix of deciduous and evergreen trees provides diverse habitats for wildlife, from the forest floor to the canopy. The park's underbrush is rich with native shrubs and wildflowers, which bloom in a vibrant display during the spring and summer months. Wetlands within the park further enhance its ecological diversity. These areas are critical for water filtration, flood control, and providing habitat for unique plant and animal communities. Species such as the great blue heron, beavers, and various waterfowl can be seen in and around these wetlands. #### Recreational Opportunities Haw River State Park offers a multitude of recreational activities that cater to nature enthusiasts, families, and adventure seekers. One of the park's highlights is the extensive trail system that winds through its diverse landscapes. These trails range from easy walks to more challenging hikes, allowing visitors to explore the park at their own pace. The most popular trail, the Iron Ore Belt Access Trail, offers scenic views of the river and surrounding forests, making it a favorite for hikers and nature photographers. For those interested in water-based activities, the Haw River provides excellent opportunities for kayaking and canoeing. Paddlers can enjoy a peaceful journey down the river, observing wildlife and enjoying the tranquility of the natural surroundings. Fishing is another popular activity, with anglers seeking out the river's abundant fish populations, including bass, catfish, and sunfish. The park also features designated picnic areas, making it an ideal spot for family outings and group gatherings. These areas are equipped with tables, grills, and shelters, providing a perfect setting for a relaxing day in nature. Additionally, the park offers several open spaces for recreational activities such as frisbee, soccer, and birdwatching. #### Environmental Education One of the most significant aspects of Haw River State Park is its commitment to environmental education. The park is home to the Summit Environmental Education Center, which serves as a hub for learning and discovery. This facility offers a wide range of educational programs and workshops for schools, community groups, and the general public. The programs are designed to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the natural world, covering topics such as ecology, conservation, and sustainability. The education center features hands-on exhibits, interactive displays, and live animal demonstrati

This place is more of a conference center than a state park. There are a couple of miles of trails to hike. And you can see the small Haw River and a lake. There is a nice Taxidermy collection in the information center.

The conference center is super convenient and in a beautiful setting. The staff are always cheerful and helpful. Facilities are diverse and accommodate a variety of groups. A gem of a place right outside Greensboro. For anyone who has stayed here before, the rooms got new beds this year, and the lobby got a new look! Check it out.
