We were delighted to discover this Japanese ceramic artist's studio and gallery in Asheville. There are a range of pieces from small to large, and all of them are simple in shape, utilitarian and astonishing in texture and color. The boldness of his designs distinguish his works from traditional Japanese potters and yet there is no mistake as to where his influences lie.

Lots of dramatic pottery to look at. First saw Akira Satake on an episode of a Craftsman's Legacy. Seeing it in person was quite the experience and lots more than what I expected. I am now the proud owner of the most expensive coffee cup I have ever owned but well worth it. The whole Asheville artist scene is worth the trip on its own. I'm thinking I might go back and get three more of those coffee cups and have a set of four.

In a town replete w/ great pottery and art, Akira's ceramics are in a class all their own. Very unique earthen style. Plus his shop has a great food offerings as well. Definitely worth a look in the River Arts District.
