There are very few local, family owned, garages left. This is a third (or fourth) generation business. The service is honest, quick, and completely reliable. They're great guys.

I would give zero stars if I could. I called and asked a very common and simple question. Which is what is their hourly rate. However the rude person I spoke with said "come here and take a look at the sign posted on the wall. I don't give that information out over the phone. It's like giving my social security number out".... wow!!! That is quite possibly dumbest thing I've ever heard he definitely lost my business. That guy is a complete idiot and most likely inbred. I don't know how that shop is still in business with that lack of professionalism. He should wake up and get with the program.

Jimmy is a great guy and all of the employees are a pleasure to deal with. Whether it is a simple gas fill up or an oil change or brake job they are always wonderful to deal with and I leave feeling like I was treated fairly and honestly.

I had been a customer of Tompkins Garage for well over 10 years. I would often bring both of my vehicles there for service. One being an Antique 1979 VW Volkswagen Bug (Kharman Built). To keep this short and to the point I would like to focus on the trust that one develops within any relationship and usually it is based in honesty. Well this appears NOT to have been case with TOMPKINS GARAGE when last November I had my BUG towed to them for a major repair to the engine due to a MAJOR OIL LEAK that depleted the car of all oil being present in the car when it was started up - (This was the result of another service station's inadequacy).Of course trusting TOMPKINS GARAGE, I naturally believed their expertise and their experience with antique cars. This was also based on my past personal experience of auto service with them. In addition, my insurance company had my back and supported TOMPKINS' evaluation (full extent of damages and repairs) and the estimated cost of what was necessary to repair the car. A VALVE JOB!!!The repairs were completed in late spring and at that time I noticed the rear leak still present while my car was housed. I brought the car back to TOMPKINS GARAGE (at that time) and James (elder) put the bug on the lift and assured me that it was nothing to worry about. Never mentioning that it was the ongoing oil leak that they never addressed in all the repairs that were done. Why would anyone do a valve job and consciously ignore an oil leak? Well the leak continues...Well that's not the case - today I spoke to his son who told me it was new oil (thus the light color of the oil). So James (elder) phones me today stating that he was not responsible for correcting the oil leak issue...The REASON the car needed a valve job in the first case!!! And James did not feel it necessary to inform me of the need for this repair (out of pocket would have been fine) so as to prevent further engine damage!!My evaluation of TOMPKINS GARAGE is that James only considered his benefit of repairing my engine and the MONIES awarded him by the INSURANCE company. His responsibility to me as a customer was not even considered. And compounded by his lack of honesty when I brought the car back to him, placing it on the lift and reassuring me that it was nothing...never telling me it was the ongoing oil leak that he consciously hid from me. SHAME on HIM!!!! CUSTOMERS BEWARE!!Services: Oil change

Great service and great work. They were busy before a long weekend, but still managed to get my car fixed before within 1.5 days, so I wasn't stuck without a car

Great Shop, Great Family Business I've used Tompkins Garage for lots of different kinds of work - repairs, basic maintenance, installing trailer hitches and brake controllers, and recently had some body work done after backing into my wife's minivan in the driveway. All of the repair work was great - the other work as well. The body work was perfect, quick, and kept me out of the dog house. Really nice people to work with. A very traditional family business, with ethical practices and quality work. I'm a big fan of solid family businesses, although they are harder and harder to find. I've tried several other shops in the area, and have been disappointed with the quality of work and business practices. The only caution is that every time I visit, they are in the process of restoring a drop-dead beautiful muscle car, and I don't know how long I can resist finding my dream car and getting Tompkins Garage to restore it :) I'd highly recommend Tompkins Garage, despite the irresistible lure of their restoration projects.

Great, honest service! I've been using Thompkins Garage for years and drive up from NYC to get my cars serviced. Recently had front and back rotors and brakes replaced with no hassle or extras that they try to sell you at Midas and other national chains. Owner Jimmy, Jimmy Jr and others have decades of experience. Rachel recently joined the front office staff and is an excellent communicator.
