Casa Basso's façade, complete with two fencing musketeers, horse sculptures and a castle, is a rustic, familiar site while driving along the Montauk Highway. In fact, the restaurant is one of the area's oldest, having been established in 1928. Fried zucchini and clams casino are stars among the appetizers, while mains run the gamut from seafood like broiled flounder and sautéed scallops to a small but strong selection of classic pastas such as fettuccine Alfredo, spaghetti and meatballs or baked manicotti. Meat dishes include the usual suspects of red sauce joints: veal piccata, chicken Parmigiana and osso buco, as well as a simple filet, sirloin and rack of lamb done right. All entrées are served with a house salad and choice of side, including pasta, vegetable or potato. An extensive wine list favoring Italian reds and whites also has a variety of French, Australian, Californian and local Long Island bottles. Be sure to make time to explore the grounds after your meal.
