I recently had an unpleasant experience at Walmart that I feel compelled to share. As a regular customer, I made a quick trip to the store specifically to purchase a single item—a $0.97 toothbrush. I didn’t browse or buy anything else. I went directly to the aisle where the toothbrushes were located, picked up the item, and then walked straight to the self-checkout area.
When I attempted to check out, my transaction was held with a message saying “Customer associate needed.” The store manager, Erin, came over and initially checked the video of me scanning the item. She then informed me that the name of the item didn’t match what was in the computer system. She questioned me about this discrepancy, and when I explained that I didn’t know why it showed differently, I felt like I was being interrogated. Erin then went further by voiding my original scan and rescanning the item herself while checking the transaction in the computer. After verifying the item’s price and information, she simply said “Oh” and walked away without any further explanation or apology.
This excessive scrutiny for such a low-cost item, combined with the lack of an apology, made me feel deeply mistrusted and disrespected. I had already confirmed online that the toothbrush was priced correctly at $0.97, so the whole situation seemed unjustified. Moreover, I was only holding the toothbrush, my personal mini wallet, and my cell phone, which made the level of investigation seem even more excessive.
Despite being well-dressed, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was treated unfairly and that my race might have played a role in this disproportionate level of scrutiny. This experience was not only disappointing but also turned what should have been a simple errand into an uncomfortable and distressing encounter. Walmart’s policy against discrimination seems to be ignored by their employees, and it appears that the company hires individuals who, despite holding positions like store manager, do not treat customers with the respect and fairness expected. I hope Walmart reviews their self-checkout procedures and employee training to ensure that all customers are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of the cost of their purchase or their appearance.

Vestal used to be a nice store over 10 years ago...but not these days. Poor team management. Store manager Erin handles issues because she has to not because she is concerned about her store's customers. Always a nightmare every time I have to go in. Alot of team members need to be properly trained, retrained or something. Anytime you have a bad experience call customer service right away.. they will make sure it is addressed. And documented..enough customer complaints and the big bosses have to do store visits and figure out why there are so many complaints. Unlike the actual store who relies on customers not calling cooperate.

Self-checkout is a nightmare and the cashiers there are very rude. Regular checkout is way too slow.

Had the worst experience shopping here today. The associate at the door whose job is to check everyone's receipt, did not stop anyone to check their receipt except me. I understand that it's her job to check receipts but she should be diligent with her work and should check everyone's receipt and not be selective about it. This kind of behavior breeds discrimination and this employee will be responsible for a lawsuit against walmart for discrimination
