A few days ago, early August 2022, I purchased a high-end inflatable boat in Shelter Island and, within 30 minutes, accidentally caused a tear to the boat. I drove to Jack’s Marine store in order to attempt to find a repair kit. Upset with myself and desperate, I spoke with an employee, Frank, who hurriedly looked for the repair kit. Another employee, Steve, overheard us talking and approached me, seeing the frustration in my face. He immediately asked to see the damaged boat and within minutes offered to begin the repair with me, using store-owned supplies. On this very hot day, Steve helped me unload the boat and carried it with me to the rear of the store where he began the repair. Within a few days, I completed the repair. I am reminded that there are wonderful people out there, strangers who are willing to put their best foot forward and help people. Not only is Steve a great employee, but he is an even better person. Jack's is the kind of place you go to get all the supplies on your list for a project and wind up having a helpful chat about how you're going to accomplish it. As someone whose father's been gone a few years, that holds tremendous value for me! Whether I'm painting a room, stripping some wood or solving a typical island mildew issue, somewhere in the Jack's universe there's a solution and a kind word or two. And they're indispensable for all my sailing pals, Come summer, there's no end to the array of water toys, floats of all kinds and barbecues. Over the years I've bought multiple kiddie pools, delightful indoor toys and solid sand chairs. A visit to Jack's never leaves me wanting. It's an essential part of island life!

While COVID has everyone properly masked and limiting customers, this store has taken it to another level. You are not allowed in the store but must ring the bell and tell them what you are looking for. Simple enough, but when I asked for something more specific, I was met with tremendous attitude "well you didn't ask for that the first time" and yelling by another employee in the store about universal fittings. When I asked about a return if this product didn't work, it was like I had just asked for their first born. I know times are stressful, but customer service is especially important when it comes to hardware, and this place really missed the mark. Hoping I caught them on a bad day, but I won't be returning for any further business at this location.

don't ever pay ahead for reservation for a mooring - no negotiating even when a problem arises ... have always been happy here - will never go back

Calling this a hardware store doesn't cover it. It's an amazing, Brooklyn level toy and children's gift store. Whoever chooses their selections is thoughtful and really gets kids. They have great brands and weird stuff that small children love. Good jigsaw puzzle selection too. Can't speak to the hardware!!!!

Family owned and run for 75 years! My girlfriend and I (mid 20s) stopped in just walking by on a whim. We got wrapped into a whirlwind of nostalgia for 45+ minutes and left with some trinkets and gifts. Aside from all of the toys, they also have boating and utility supply store type items. Just a little piece of Shelter Island that makes it what it is!

Very friendly owner and employees with an assortment of entertainment for kids (toys), home supplies, boating supplies, beach supplies and fishing supplies. We like to always stop in and support this business when we visit.
