Called weeks in advance to make a reservation for a trip that was an early Christmas present for my younger brother. I was hoping to request a vehicle with AWD. A rude member of the staff told me to go online and make the reservation and then proceed to complain how Hertz is incentivizing them to push electric cars. So, I went online and made a reservation for a small sedan. The day of the trip, an hour before we were to leave, I showed up to pick up my car and was told they didn't have it and I could take an electric car or pay more for an SUV. I opted for the electric car and can say that I now regret that decision. My brother and I made it to our destination with literal seconds to spare before the event started, because of our multiple stops we had to make to charge the car, which was not factored into the trip because I was not expecting to have to take an electric car. The real fun began when after the temperature dropped, the car's battery began to use more power and charge slower. We left at 11 pm and were supposed to be home around 3 am to catch some sleep before having to return the rental car at 11 am. We did not arrive back in Schenectady until 9:30 am due to having to slow charge due to temperature so many different times on our route. Upon returning, I then attempted to charge the car to return it within 5% of the received charge amount, per Hertz and it would take an hour and a half to full charge the car on a fast charger. I arrived to the first charging station to find that it was not functioning from an interface standpoint. The car was on 10% charge. I then drove over to SCCC and their chargers physical connections were not working and it was not a fast charger, so even if they did work there was no way way the car would charge in time. Also, the car was now on 5% and I was beginning to worry about the car dying. So I attempted to call Hertz 3 times. Each time I would be answered by the same employee saying please hold then placing me on hold for a few minutes before disconnecting the call. So I decided to use what range I had to get it back to Hertz. I then came into the lobby where a very frustrated and unhappy employee had me wait. I then tried to explain my situation to her and why the car was at the 3% that it was at, and that I felt I shouldn't be charged the $35 fee because I attempted to have it charged and for reasons outside my control I could not and how I shouldn't have to deal with it because I had requested a gas car anyway and would've happily filled a gas car back up to return to them. She then stated that it wasn't up to her and told me to call corporate. So I filed a complaint with Hertz corporate. This was Saturday. It is now Tuesday and still no word back yet. My guess is I won't hear back from them. My other guess, based on the information from my first contact with them, is that they won't attempt to get you the car that you want, and instead just assume you really need a car and will pawn an EV off on you and you will take it out of a need for a vehicle and they get whatever incentive they get for electric cars. Will be going with Enterprise from here on out. Please take this as a warning and don't let this happen to you.

Horribly rude and non-compassionate customer service. I only used Hertz because they are the rental company preferred by my insurance company and I needed a vehicle after mine was totaled in an accident. I experienced rude customer service over the phone and in person. The only vehicle they had available for me within the coverage of my insurance company, was an electric vehicle. I voiced the fact that I have never driven an electric vehicle and have no idea how charging them worked. I was assured that it was a very easy process - given my experience I’d have to very strongly disagree.

My name is Amanda and I am 37 years old. I recently had reconstructive surgery on my mouth and face due to a connective tissue disorder I was born with. My jaw bone was degenerating so rapidly which caused me to have my teeth removed to prevent endocarditis (infection of the heart leading to death). I tried wearing glue on dentures but because I was loosing my entire jaw bone, they would not stay on. I had no other choice but to seek a rare surgery to save my face and be able to eat/chew solid foods. This surgery cost me 43,000$ and insurance would not cover any of it because they say it’s cosmetic when all my doctors have written documentation that it is medically necessary. I brought this all the way up to congress and they said there is nothing they can do. I had no clue on Tuesday that my follow up appointment would take over 6 hours and that I would hit traffic and have to charge the electric vehicle 4x for an hour each time. I read on the website that I would be charged 1/5 of a daily rate unless it exceeds 5 hours. I tried calling the local hertz but it just kept going to a recording. I was charged almost 200.00$ extra and when reaching out to harold the store manager, i was only offered a 20.00$ credit. I explained my entire situation and he was incredibly Incompassionate and just kept saying the charges are valid. Now I do not have enough money to get to my next appointment because of this. I have been out of work for 3 months now and I am still in recovery. I had 6 screws placed into my cheeks and nose bones. All I wanted is a refund for the extra day as I returned the vehicle that evening as soon as I possibly could. I will not be using Hertz ever again if this is not rectified.

Picked up at 3pm Wednesday and paid for it until 11:30pm Friday night.. was told I’d be charged a full day anyway so I assumed I could return it the following morning. By 2am I was charged almost as much as I paid for Wednesday at 3pm-Friday at 11:30pm drop off by 2am Saturday morning… Ridiculous. Never coming back.

Like many of the other reviewers I had the same rude and dismissive experience with the manager. He is a crook and charged me for 2 days because I dropped off my car late on a day the store was closed. He requires you to send a photo of the mileage to get a time stamp for your return. The car was also filthy dirty on the outside, was sloppily cleaned inside and had no floor mats.

I rented a vehicle for a week. When I picked up the vehicle it was not washed or cleaned on the inside. In addition it wasn't the type of vehicle I was promised. Two of the charging ports did not work and the wipers were faulty. At the end of the first week I called to renew the car for another week. At the end of the second week I contacted them to renew for a third week but because I wasn't able to use my original form of payment due to a new credit card number, they informed me that I had to come in person to initiate a new contract. I was unable to get to their location before they closed. Had I known this I would have returned the car by the end of the second week. I drive for Uber so I had to rent a vehicle from a rental company that Uber partners with and the closest location was 2 hours from my home. I returned the vehicle on Monday afternoon and they charged me late fees for 3 days plus 20% sales tax. They were very unreasonable and refused to work with me and drop the late charges. Worst experience ever with a car rental company. I would never recommend Hertz to my worst enemy.

The 2 stars given are for Shae (local) and Eric from billing’s customer service. The 3 missing stars are for the manager Harold’s lack thereof. PLEASE NOTE: if you’re doing an after hours drop off you need to take a picture of the car in the lot and the odometer; a video of you putting the keys in the drop-box; ask other renters waiting for Ubers (or are they vagabonds hanging out waiting for their pizza next door or the bus nearby? You’ll know when you get knifed for talking to strangers in “the neck”) to move out the way so you can check the door for notes from Harold. If you find instructions you may need to email Harold (and I’d suggest corporate to avoid any of Harold’s after hour shady tactics) all these pieces of proof (assuming you weren’t shanked) so he can know for SURE you dropped the car off when you said you did. Here’s an idea, if you don’t trust your clients or are worried about a few hours of lost rental fees — don’t offer after-hours drop-offs in the first place or post the instructions ON THE DROP BOX itself in BOLD FONT and COLOR. But definitely don’t ask single women to be unnecessarily asking strange men, strange questions to search for Harold instructions on doors in the ghetto-adjacent so he can make sure he isn’t owed $100. Hertz corporate - when a young woman gets assaulted out here one Sunday evening - don’t say you weren’t warned.

DO NOT rent from this shop. They were extremely unprofessional. I paid in full in advance and when I arrived they only had an electric car available which wasn’t going to work and not the car agreed upon in the initial reservation. They forced us to “upgrade” in order to get a normal car. They seem to do this to others as you can see for yourself in the reviews. Save the headache and go to the airport.
