I strongly recommend against using Mabey's Moving and Storage for a cross country move.
I’ve used Atlas Van Lines a few times before, with great results. This time I went with Atlas and it was subcontracted to Mabey’s. I sincerely hope Atlas drops Mabey’s as a subcontractor, as it will hurt their reputation.
Poor communication:
* In NY it’s typical to get a Certificate of Insurance to use a moving elevator. I had to ask them for this six times before they were able to deliver it.
* We never received a call about when the movers were coming. We called the office, they said they would call back, and they never did.
* For delivery, I also never received a call confirming delivery time. I called their office twice the day before to ask about it. They said they didn’t hear from the driver. I asked for the driver’s number. The driver responded to me immediately. I suspect Mabey’s wasn’t even trying.
Dishonest estimates, scammy practices:
* Another moving company pointed out the extra cost for a smaller shuttle on delivery. They said companies often leave this out on purpose. I asked my Mabey’s rep about this and he said don’t worry, it’s in the estimate. It wasn’t.
* Even worse: they claim that you won’t pay more than 10% over the estimate. Of course, my total was 10% over the estimate. But, there is a clause that says they can charge up to another 15% if you sign an agreement after delivery for extra services. I was ~tricked~ into signing an agreement for extra services. This extra service was a smaller shuttle on pickup, which 1) was unnecessary, 2) was left off of the initial estimate, 3) was left off of my final bill of sale. All by “accident”. This sequence of “accidents” let them charge me 25% over the estimate instead of the guaranteed 10% max. Perfect. They agreed to pay for 1/2 of this extra charge. I was tempted to sue them but wanted to be done with the ordeal.
Damaged goods:
* My furniture was poorly protected. My expensive record cabinet has a big scratch on the side. There are other various nicks and issues. All because of a poorly done moving job.
* The movers showed up without a mattress cover, so I needed to go buy one.
* My mattress and various other things showed up covered in dirt and grime.

Like others have said, we received a super fast and what I assumed was an accurate quote. Everything was supposedly all set until the morning of our move when the movers showed up with half the supplies they needed. No extra boxes, no materials to pack any of our mattresses, no expectations of what they were actually packing - which was a 3 bedroom house and a barn. They were utterly confused the entire time. Missed entire closets, drawers, and shelving units. When it came time to pack our barn, we were told we were out of room in the moving truck the estimator was positive we wouldn't fill. We had to go rent an additional trailer and buy more moving supplies because again, they didn't bring enough. Incredibly frustrating and stressful process that could have been avoided with an accurate quote. Not to mention, now that we have unpacked, the list of damaged items just keeps growing - a king size Purple mattress, our dining room table, workout equipment, my wedding dress. We can't even get a call back anyone in charge, not that they would make any of this right. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere for moving help.

I was surprised at the price for my very large move (3 trucks full). I was bracing myself for a much larger number.
On the day of the move, the crew was awesome and got us setup in the new house quickly.

My sister, Lois Wilson chose Mabey’s to move her to a new apartment at Avila Senior Housing in Albany. The Mabey’s movers, Ryan and Stew arrived promptly on Monday morning, July 22nd. They were outstanding and the family gives them five stars plus. They were polite, professional, skilled, efficient, and so pleasant to work with. They finished before noon having done an excellent job.

Now that my move is completed, I’m beginning to understand how this whole process works.
A bunch of very friendly people tell you how seamless the process will be. They estimate the cost based on a virtual walk-through and explain that usually the estimate is over the actual cost. They talk about a window of time for the pick up and delivery of your possessions, but promise it’ll all work out. They mean for them.
On the day of the move, a collection of unskilled, inexperienced laborers handle your possessions like trash, and cram it randomly onto a truck, because they’ve never done this before, and the driver is busy trying to compensate for their incompetence.
The truck pulls away, you leave your former home, and days later you’re told to pay for the move, or your possessions won’t be delivered. And you’re given a window of dates that they may be delivered, but if the dates don’t work for you, your possessions will be off loaded into storage, you’ll be charged for storage, and there’ll be twice as great a chance that things will be damaged in the process. Boxes marked fragile will be placed under four or five heavy boxes, crushing those underneath. Boxes marked this end up will be placed on their sides. It’s all about a tight fit. It’s not about keeping your possessions safe or intact.
When your stuff is finally delivered and you see the inventory for the first time, you’re so overwhelmed with making sure you’ve got everything, that there’s no time to assess damage, except for the items that are obviously destroyed. And days later, when you get to boxes with damaged contents, odds are you’ll let it go, to the delight of the moving company. They never cared anyway.
What a deal! You cram someone’s stuff into a truck, haul it to a location, dump it out, and get a ton of money. Genius!
I will never use your company again, I will warn everyone I can against using your company, and I will write honest reviews of the “service” I received.
“Mabey” you’ll get good service.
“Mabey” the dates will work out.
“Mabey” nothing will be damaged.
“Mabey” NOT!

I cannot say enough amazing things about these 2 humans-Sean Freehill & Is Pitot hands down not only awesome humans and didn’t just make my dad and I feel like it was just another job! They are amazing movers!!They handled all of daddy’s stuff like it was their own!!! Without a doubt hands down I recommend not only Mabey’s Moving and Storage but I highly recommend asking for these 2 humans specifically!!!

Everyone at Mabey's made my recent move so easy! They are highly professional in every aspect of their business. I was given a clear cost estimate based on a personal survey of my home. A packet of literature included valuable information for my planning purposes. The office staff were always available to cheerfully answer any questions I might have. The van arrived as planned and the movers were careful and efficient in packing up and unloading my furniture. I could not have been happier and I would highly recommend them to anyone planning a move!

Outstanding service. Moved from across country and this company made it stress free. Packed up the storage unit. Arrived earlier than expected (after verifying that it is okay with me). Packed up swiftly and safely. Not only did they deliver, with my wife's instructions, they put the boxes in each room from the basement to the second floor so we didn't have to. Didn't once complain about the HEAVY tools that went downstairs.
Can not express the happiness I felt when the bill came UNDER the estimate.

Great experience every time! We’ve used Mabey’s for both interstate and local moves (and storage) and they’ve been fantastic to deal with. Chuck and his crew helped our family in a senior downsizing move that included timely logistics and multiple keepsake pieces. Not only were the pieces delivered in perfect condition, but the price was competitive and the guys were friendly, professional, and accommodating.

The care and attention by the moving crew was above par, and professional.
The pre move and storage estimates were off the mark by some 40%. When I brought this to Mabey’s attention they did make some slight / minimal adjustments the name of customer service.

We had a fantastic experience with Mabey. Stan, George, Dylan and Riley were the most professional and courteous persons we have had the pleasure of dealing with. They treated us with respect and handled our property as if it was their own! Great customer service and a positive reflection of our recent dealings with Mabey. Kylie and Sierra were also great to deal with during this stressful period.
