Free art museum with a remarkable variety, from ancient artifacts to modern art, including some Picasso, Rothko, and others.
Vassar grounds are also beautiful.

Got a suggestion from my B&B host that the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar College was worth visiting. What a gem this museum is! Although it is not huge, the art within is world class with everything from modern works to famous classical artists to ancient antiquities. To top it off...it's free and not crowded! I am told they rotate the pieces on display so there is always something different to see. I am certain I will return on my next trip to the Hudson Valley.

One of the more impressive collections / spaces I've seen completely free.
Sculpture garden, various exhibitions, beautifully designed space, and a permanent collection that rivals some of the more well known museums in NYC.
Can't recommend enough.

I happened upon this place while my daughter was doing a college tour. Absolutely stunning collection. Every piece here is a gem.

Amazing resource for this little town of ours! It’s a small gallery which means it’s very comfortable to get through— you can spend as much time as you like with each piece and still see everything. And FREE admission is unreal. Thank you Vassar!

A small (free) gallery with an interesting collection covering ancient to current time.An interesting ongoing work encourages you to add your own input. There's also currently a fun installation consisting of a pile of candy that you're encouraged to sample. Yum!If you're in the area, it's well worth a look. The grounds and Chapel are another reason to go.Free 2 hour parking for visitors.

Dominic, the docent, made our visit so very memorable! He was so kind, supportive, and willing to teach my four and six year old boys literally around every corner. I learned so much from him and will remember this afternoon and how he touched our family for years to come. This museum has a beautiful selection of a wide range of historic and modern pieces from around the world. It is also free and on a gorgeous campus with pretty accessible street parking. Store has a small selection of lovely magnets and keychains, but bring cash/check.

Really impressed by the collections here, both historic and modern. It was a nice hour or two and the exhibits were well displayed and encouraged contemplation. Not surprised to learn that Vassar was the first college with an art museum in its charter based on this experience. And, it's free!

Free! But no backpacks or large bags-- put them in a locker. Two to three hours, you could see it all leisurely.

We came for the art collection and we had a full experience visiting the Vassar college, the second in the US for women students, the first to include an art museum in its concept. The collection is very interesting, with a few exquisite top works by Francis Bacon, Henry Moore, Picasso and other. Entry is free, even the entry booth was unattended, but we had the chance to be met by an assistant in the gallery who provided us precious special information. All works are beautifully exposed and well documented (text and on-line).Do not miss the sculptures garden and the chapel with the exquisite stain-glass windows.

My wife and I added this museum to the itinerary of our eight-day road trip through the Hudson Valley, the Berkshires and Vermont. The museum, though not on a grand scale, holds and excellent and varied permanent collection, from ancient Egyptian sculptures or marble and red granite to contemporary American paintings (which, I admit, are not my interest). Not surprising, there is a good representation of the Hudson River School, and five of the 13 galleries are arranged chronologically (Thirteenth Century to Modern and Contemporary, with individual gallaries devoted to the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries, respectively). As an added bonus, if you have the time available, walk the beautiful Vassar campus itself. There is a self-guided tour ("Campus Art at Vassar). I particularly recommend the nearby Chapel (with stained glass windows by Tiffany and La Farge), Taylor Hall (magnificent "The Gates of Paradise" bronze doors), and the Thompson Memorial Library (tapestries depicting Cupid and Psyche and the "Coronado" stained-glass window).
