This establishment is wonderful Sammy is highly conscientious about the animals and the order of things here and cares so much about all the pets and people coming through here. This society is appointment only and for good reason, it gives animals much anxiety and causes stress to have strangers/mixed energies constantly coming in and out, also, the workers here set up appointments specifically to try and match you with a pet that is conducive to your needs, your living situation and your lifestyle. In this way, they ensure the best ideal match fit made in heaven, for you and your new furry friend. In this way everyone wins in the end. It is also very clean and organized here. The adoption agency is great next door, as is the animal hospital I took my dog there for many years, also the thrift shop is excellent as well and everyone is kind in this whole inlet. I love this establishment and wish you all the best.??

I’m not sure what going on with this animal shelter. It seems that to adopt a dog or a cat you have to send a email called a few times. I don’t know why it’s so difficult to call and come to the shelter and visit the animals. Why is it so hard?

Adoption process is so messy. Their website says to message a number with your email and they never respond nor send an email. I've call numerous times in one day willing to adopt this dog and was told i'd get an email within 2 minutes and it's been over 4 hours... no email. I don't understand how an animal shelter who is looking for families to adopt these dogs would give such a hassle to those who are genuinely looking to adopt a dog that is in need. god knows how long these dogs might've been sitting there with potential families and couldn't get picked up because of how unorganized this facility is. Very sad and a shame.

HVHS really stands out as a shelter. We adopted two dogs from them. You can be sure that the staff *really* cares about their animals, and at a shelter, that is obviously the most important part. They were the third shelter we visited. This shelter in particular has a commitment to security, excellence, and care for their animals. You have no doubt that the shelter is acting with the best interest of their animals in mind, and the staff will go above and beyond to connect you with a pet that's the perfect fit.

It's weird that the 2 awful reviews left here are one that didn't adopt a pet and the other from a person that wanted to haggle with a non profit. This page was just calling for a good experience.Anyways, my husband and I adopted a kitten from the Hudson Valley Humane Society while they were having an adoption event at our local PetSmart in Nanuet. What's funny is we had no intention of adopting that day as we had visited Hi Tor Animal Shelter the day earlier and were waiting to hear back about a kitten we put an application in for. We have previously adopted all of our pets from Hi Tor as it's a kill shelter and try to save as many lives as possible. For some reason Hi Tor never got back to us (the experience there wasn't a good one, the staff got into a huge argument while we were there and it was the most awkward scene ever) and when we walked into Pet Smart we saw the most beautiful Russian Blue kitten that seriously the sweetest thing in the whole world. The Humane Society staff was nothing but a pleasure to work with as i cried holding the new bundle of joy that I became instantly attached to (she reminded me very much of our late cat that we lost recently) and approved us quickly. I didn't mind the ample fee to adopt her as she was in much better condition than the Hi Tor kitten (already fixed, washed, clipped and micro-chipped) and she was incredible happy and well adjusted. we even got a care package, coupons and a carrier which we refused to go home with as we have plenty already. I am totally looking forward with working with them again and for now am swearing off High Tor.

This place is terrible and needs to hire more staff. I’ve been trying to adopt a cat since the beginning of January. It’s now the end of March. I’ve been calling, leaving text messages, and emails. The voicemail box is full and left a message on the website. No one has gotten back to me for 3 months. There’s animals that in cages that need to be adopted and no one cares. This is supposed to be a temporary place til the animals to find a loving home but how can they find a loving home if this place seems more permanent.

Unfortunately this place is terrible. You call the main number and it says mailbox is full with zero other information given. Emails submitted go unanswered. Phone numbers provided from satellite facilities go unanswered or not returned and who ultimately pays the price? Poor defenseless animals who are looking to be adopted. I strongly suggest contacting anyone who is suppling this agency with grants or funding to immediately pull the resources until a complete overhaul is done

I am really upset to see people unhappy with this place. We have adopted three cats here and everything has been just fine. It is a well run place and is very busy. There is always alot going on and sometimes you can fall through the cracks a little. But they come back. The people care about what they are doing so let them do there work. It is about the "hotel" stayers more than us how want to take them home. The workers are here for a reason. I have just retired, so we will finally get a dog to add to our two cats. So I will let you see how all goes. I am sure it will be just fine.
