Site of the Revolutionary battle of Orisjany where British soldiers and allied Native Americans ambushed American militia under Nicholas Herkimer in a gully as they were marching to Fort Stanwix (in modern-day Rome, NY) to lift the British siege. Much of the area is an open field with a very old, large monument to commemorate the battle which makes it difficult to picture what the battle was like. The most interesting part for me was the trail through the gully (a little bit of a slope down and then up on the east side of the park) where the ambush took place, where things are much easier to visualize. Geri g some background from signs, brochure, and the video of the battle will definitely help you understand the battle better.

Given the history of this spot, the place is very peaceful. The memorial is noteworthy and battlefield is clean and nicely maintained.

An incredible story from the American Revolution. Very few people so you can walk the Battlefield, read the signage and reflect on the bravery.
Picnic area: Picnic tables under trees, so okay for shade.

Alert! Information building is closed due to ramped path construction. There are no public restrooms available.
This is a wonderful and respectful monument and park to the Valor of all the Patriots who fought here.

While I stumbled on this by accident because of a detour on the Erie canal way trail I am glad I did because I had a nice good experience here.

Small but remarkable stop if you are a history buff. Even if you aren't, maybe a nice stop to show your kids that people struggled and fought..and we now have greater opportunities as the outcome of their bravery so long ago. This is a good place to pay your respects, especially on a slightly warm, sunny day with a light breeze. This place can speak to you.
