The manager is unprofessional and rude to say the least. Yelling at guests who come in and being quiet nasty is a turn off to anyone that wants to adopt. You should be ashamed to call this woman your manager. In the moment it's jaw dropping, it feels like a scripted TV show and it's not. Standing there watching this all go down I have to wonder how you let this woman for one be in a leadership position, and two let her speak for your business. If she treats guests this way, just imagine how she treats the staff, and then those poor animals. Please do better.

I wasn't going to chime in, but after my friend's experience attempting to adopt here, I'm going to pitch in to the abundance of negative reviews.I visited MHS for the first time a few months ago, and after reading every review here, it seems that I got extremely lucky. I never encountered Maureen, the shelter manager.I was immediately creeped out by seeing the squalid condition of this facility. (MHS been open since the late 50's or early 60's, yet it's taken them until the year of our lord 2023 to finally be able to begin constructing a new facility? And only because a bank gave them a grant?) I tried not to be pre-judgmental, maneuvering around crater-sized potholes (which have since been filled, thankfully), and walking past a junkyard of donated crates and other pet supplies. Upon entering the building, I was assailed by a rank odor that permeated the walls. The reception area was dimly lit, obviously dated, and meek, but the two staff members I spoke to were kind and pleasant. Truthfully, I felt pity and secondhand embarassment for them, working in such an environment. The older gentleman offered me a tour of their facility, which I'll bet I would've been denied if I'd been speaking with the shelter manager. He told me she was out that day.The dog kennels were, to no surprise, the source of the foul odor. I instantly pitied every barking, crying animal in that back room. The individual units were all way too small, in my opinion (although I understand the building is far older than me), and the acoustics of the room amplified the dogs' voices, making for a very stress-inducing atmosphere for the animals. The units themselves looked grimy. I honestly wondered if keeping the dogs in sub-par conditions like this was some deliberate ploy to garner the sympathies of potential adopters; a tactic to tug at heartstrings and goad people to save the dogs from their plights...The shelter's "medical ward" room wasn't spared the aforementioned foul odor, and I questioned the sanitation of the room...I had considered applying to volunteer at this shelter (and maybe even seek part-time work), but decided against it. I had also considered applying for a dog with MHS, but their application form turned me off from the idea. I found some of the questions invasive and even loaded.A few weeks ago, my friend braved the application process to adopt a puppy (of a breed she has experience with) who was down on its luck, only to get totally screwed over. She left two contact numbers, a home and cell phone number, but she was only reached via her home phone number, while she was at work. No contact was made using her cell number. She also didn't know (because it doesn't say anywhere on the application form or website) that adopters must provide their veterinarians consent to release their pets' medical records for examination by MHS staff. I would've stumbled into the same pitfall, never having adopted a shelter animal before, had I applied. I would suggest that the MHS staff add this information to their application so new adopters are aware and can avoid application approval delays which can ultimately wind up costing them the animals they're interested in, as was the unfortunate case for my friend. Not only did my friend lose out on her target puppy, but it was adopted out the very same day they failed to get ahold of her. She wasn't notified of this. She wasn't even informed that her application was approved for *general* adoption; she found out from her daughter, who paid an in-person visit to the shelter for followup. The staff apparently even tried to play dumb and act like she hadn't inquired for said puppy by specific name.It seems that people can also be barred from entering this facility at the staff's whim, for no apparent reason. Hearing this from my friend surprised me. Her visit was such a starkly different experience from mine.Between arbitrary adoption practices, incompetent staff, and poor living conditions, I s

Incredibly unprofessional management. First of all, they do NOT want you to come inside. If you're there to potentially adopt, I would want to see the animals. Second, when you do start the application process, all responsibilities are on YOU. After inquiring about a SPECIFIC pup, my mother filled out the ridiculous 5 page application. (The application is supposed to take 24-48 hours to approve.) She left them with 2 contact numbers to reach her for any questions. The very next day she got a voice-mail on her home phone, late in the evening, claiming they had been trying to reach her all day in regards to her vet. Of course, it is now too late to call them back or the vet. She reached out to both parties first thing the next morning. The shelter responded with a ?. From then, she waited. Just shy of a week later, I took it apon myself to stop in and inquire about the pup. Not only was I told that she was approved, but also that the puppy she wanted was adopted on the same day they supposedly spent the whole day trying to reach her on a single number. The woman I spoke to also made ot out that it was my mother's fault it all fell through. She was supposed to have stayed on top of them, to keep her informed of their decision. There should be someone more professional and more capable of the position she holds. Clearly, it is too much for her to handle. The animals deserve better.

the experience i had here and over the phone was one of the WORST i’ve ever had. you would think that trying to adopt an animal and give it a better home would feel good. but instead whoever runs this place decided to make the excitement, turn into a bad day.i called back because i hadn’t gotten any update on my application for adoption. but the person who answered said they needed a vet to approve the “current” pets i had. when explaining that my past pet (which was a dog) had passed away a couple of years ago. she refused to believe me, mocked me by saying how could a dog that’s 10 years old pass away. she ran into the street and got hit by a car. this was such a sad time for me and my family and we were ready for a new pet to join us. and then after mocking me, proceeded to DENY my APPLICATION and hung up on me.it was so disrespectful. it’s like they don’t even want their animals to get adopted. whoever answered the phone needs to learn some human decency and maybe some manners.

The young lady that answered the door but would not let us in because of something happening at tractor supply, thanks for breaking out 2 year old hearts. It was during business hours and you could do was tell me s to fill out an application on line. My question is are there so many families that want to adopt that you dont need us anymore. Well then you better not kill another animal!!!!! As we were ready to adopt 3 cats. Sham on you

I had a wonderful experience at the Middletown Humane Society animal shelter. The staff was incredibly caring and attentive to both the animals and visitors. The shelter was clean and well-maintained, creating a comfortable environment for the animals. The staff is passionate about their work and dedicated to finding loving homes for the animals in their care. I highly recommend Middletown Humane Society to anyone looking to adopt a furry friend

What MHS Maureen staff and volunteers do for this community is amazing. My family adopted our Chili dog in 2013, and after 10 wonderful years he finally went to go see his girl friend Tootsie his walking friend ❤️ They also helped us with the cremation process and we’re thorough every step of the way.I also saw a picture of Oliver (than Mack) in the paper in 2018 and knew he was my baby. They became best friends and My husband and our adult children fell in love. Oliver misses Chili so much already and we do too so much but when we’re ready and most importantly Ollie lets us know he’s ready for a friend mHS is certainly where we’re going... You made our family complete 10 years ago ?❤️ March 5 2013 ❤️ our Chili came home to us

The manager is RUDE and condescending. Her attitude is not needed when people are asking questions. She has no idea how to speak to people, but knows who to say things behind their back… whatever she said to her volunteer she didn’t have the nuts to actually say it to me. Unfortunately because of that woman I’ll never return AND I should’ve checked the reviews before going there, complete waste of time. Also the shelter WREAKS I’ve never walked into a shelter & it smelled like that. THEY CARE ONLY ABOUT THE MONEY. I’m glad after reading the reviews I'm seeing that I’m not crazy for thinking $450 for a shelter dog that desperately needs a home & has been sitting there for months is outrageous. I offered $350, just spent $200 food, toys, a bed etc for this dog !! She cut me off didn’t even think about it AND was nothing but rude.

I filled an extremely invasive application. I left on thing out and supposedly I was denied. I even called them two days after I filled it out and they said they would get back to me(they never did). They didn’t even tell me I didn’t fill out the part that denied me. I waited a week and messaged only to find all this information out. The person in charge is extremely unprofessional. I will never adopt from there after this.

Found a kitten a week old and they had a foster mom ready to take him right away. Very helpful and caring.
