This was my previous review - "Always have had a great experience with Keeler Honda. They have great service, fair pricing for the services, and timely delivery." I had always had a great experience with Keeler Honda service. But that changed recently and hence this new review.
My 2015 Honda CRV, with around 124000 miles had started making loud sounds that increased with the vehicle speed. Since the vehicle was close to its next 10000-mile service, I thought that I will get it serviced a bit early and get the noise corrected.
On the day of the visit (Friday, 8/9), the service advisor relayed to me what the mechanic had found upon inspection - low engine oil which was possibly leading to the loud sound.
The amount for oil and filter change and other associated maintenance activities came to around $280.
The service advisor was gracious enough to send over the vehicle by valet services to my office. Soon I learned that the vehicle was still making a loud noise, and the valet had returned back to the service center.
The service advisor graciously got me a loaner CRV as the foreman would have to inspect the vehicle to see what was wrong.
On Thursday (8/15), a new inspection revealed that the rear wheel ball bearing was making the noise and would require replacement. Also, the VTC actuator chain was making a rattling noise at the start and would require replacement. I agreed to the repairs with the estimate going to around $3600.
On Tuesday (8/20), the above-mentioned repairs were done but there was additional noise coming from the front wheel ball bearing that needed replacement. The estimate was additional $600 which would have taken the total to $4200. I agreed to the repairs.
On Wednesday (8/21) finally the vehicle was ready and the service advisor was able to apply a discount and bring down the final charge to around $3600. The vehicle worked satisfactorily without any noise.
Two key learnings from the entire experience:
1. The mechanics aren't doing their troubleshooting accurately. They took three attempts to solve the issues. This just leads to more sticker (cost) shock.
2. The so-called legendary quality of Honda appears to be a myth. I had read articles on how a Honda CRV could go up to 200000 or 250000 miles with regular maintenance. I have spent $6200 (including this set of repairs) over the last 12 months even though the vehicle had only run 124000 miles.
