Beautiful house full of history! (Hence the local reference "the house of history"!) I have been here on many occasions over the years- from selling Christmas ornaments from a huge real tree in the upstairs hallway as a child, to attending the Lynn Strunk memorial tea. (And many times between!) Portraits hung throughout are very interesting- the rooms have been lovingly painted. I do miss the period furniture being in place however. The whole house used to be furnished- which made for a very immersive experience. Still lovely though!

We went to see the Annual Gallery of Wreaths. I loved the old house and Kinderhook is such a quaint little village.

The house has many iconic features of Federal design, and as of a summer 2019 visit, a superb exhibit of Columbia County and NYS portraits.

IF YOU TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK IN OUR SMALL TOWNS YOU'LL ALWAYS FIND SOMETHING INTERESTING. THE TOWN OF KINDERHOOK IS A FINE EXAMPLE OF THAT. ONE OF THE MANY HISTORICAL HOMES YOU'LL FIND THE JAMES VANDERPOEL HOUSE. IF YOU TAKE THE TIME TO REALLY LOOK YOU'LL FIND SOMETHING UNIQUE ALMOST IN VERY HOME. HERE YOU'LL FIND A VERY SMALL FIGURE IN THE FRONT AND BACK WINDOWS OF A LADY. SO TINY BUT YOU HAVE SEEN HER SO MANY TIMES AND HAVEN'T THOUGHT TWICE OF WHO SHE IS. BEFORE WE HAD THE STATUS OF LIBERTY THERE WAS THE GODDESS OF AMERICA: THE LADY OF COLUMBIA. SHE IS A QUASI-MYTHICAL FIGURE THAT FIRST APPEARED IN THE POETRY OF PHILLIS WHEATLEY DURING THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR IN 1776. YOU HAVE ALSO SEEN HER IN THE START OF VERY MOTION PICTURE OF THE AMERICA FILM STUDIO: COLUMBIA PICTURES. SHE IS ALL THOUGHT OUR AMERICAN HISTORY. A FEW OTHER PLACES YOU'LL SEE HER IS ON OUR COINS AND SHE CROWNS OUR UNITED STATES CAPITOL BUILDING. STILL NOT IMPRESSED. SHE EVEN HAS HER OWN SONG. UP UNTIL 1931 HER SONG WAS THE UNOFFICIAL NATIONAL ANTHEM OF THE UNITED STATES. WHICH YOU HAVE MADE OF HEARD HER SONG IF YOU'VE SEEN THE HBO MOVIE JAMES ADAMS IN THE THEATER SCENE. SO DON'T MISS THIS WONDERFUL FEDERAL STYLE HOME THAT SITS IN THE MIDDLE OF HISTORICAL KINDERHOOK.
