Shiba Inus are known for being sensitive and independent, and Jethro is no exception. Sadly, Harborside Vet clearly doesn't understand the unique needs of this breed.
From the moment we walked in, it was chaos. The waiting room was packed, and the noise and commotion clearly stressed Jethro out. He was shaking and trying to hide under the chairs.
When we finally saw the vet (Tyler Barrett), he didn't seem to have any experience with Shibas. They tried to handle Jethro roughly, which only made him more anxious and fearful. They didn't take the time to earn his trust or make him feel comfortable.
To make matters worse, they completely missed his underlying health issue. They dismissed his symptoms as "typical Shiba behavior" and sent us home with nothing but a generic anxiety medication.
Thankfully, we found a vet who specializes in Shibas and was able to properly diagnose and treat him.
Harborside Vet's lack of breed-specific knowledge and their complete disregard for Jethro's well-being is unacceptable. I would never recommend this clinic to any Shiba Inu owner.

I took my cats to this vet hospital for many years and found the staff to be very competent and caring. It is often difficult to find a good vet for one's beloved pets and this medical facility was the only place I would go when I lived on Long Island. Dr. McCormack, in particular, is a very good doctor and an all around nice person. The vet technicians are also very helpful and kind. The front desk personnel are also very kind and interested in the pets and the pets' families. I miss living on Long Island for many reasons, but not havaing Harborside to turn to when my cats are not well is one of the biggest concerns I have now. I would recommend this place and often do!!

Would give zero stars if possible. First, this is not an animal hospital so be forewarned do not bring your pet here for anything more than routine checkups and basic care. Second, as you can read in the reviews, their staff as well as their owner, Dr. Frivola are some of the rudest people you will ever meet. Next, you will mostly be dealing with different vet techs every visit, who will push every vaccine on you as well as use scare tactics to get you to agree, such as they just had an animal die yesterday of lepto (extremely rare and the vaccine is hit or miss). Now the Major issue I had with them is they almost let my 1yo puppy die at their hands if it wasn't for my intervention. They missed an internal blockage from a sock because their dr. was away on vacation ( a common occurrence) so they could only do an Xray, not an ultrasound. Since we had no idea what was wrong with our dog we believed them when the told us he had pancreatic issues. 2 days later Dr. McCormack told me she was "concerned" so it was up to me to take my dog out of there and get an emergency ultrasound, on my doing... i am not a vet. Thanks to my action my dog was saved. I was told the symptoms were clear for a blockage and should never have been missed. If you bring your pet here you will be misdiagnosed according to whomever is available and not on vacation, get the hard sales pitch for every vaccine under the sun, as well as vets who are not even knowledgeable about natural or raw diets, just shove whatever they can sell you, they also had issues clipping my puppies nails and said he was aggressive lol, i brought him somewhere else and he was as comfortable as could be, they had this issue with other people's dogs as well. They are cold salespeople and it is time for the head dr. to retire. ***Response to Dr. Frevola: Case in point, he wasn't there for any of this since he was on his usual vacations but has everything to say about it. Never said anyone on your side said the "symptoms were clear" I was told that by the other hospitals and dr's.. writhing in pain vomiting, straining during bowel movements, severe sudden vomiting, abdominal pain, hunching. Not once was a blockage mentioned until 2 days later when I insisted we couldn't wait anymore to move hospitals. Just more denial... you weren't there, I was never recommended to go elsewhere for an ultrasound that was the problem, your Dr. was literally dumbfounded on the phone with me 2 days into the issue! IT WAS MY IDEA TO MOVE MY DOG for an ultrasound immediately, thereby saving his life. Why don't you listen to the phone call when I literally say "I need you to tell me what to do here, you're the vet"... nothing. I see you don't like internet reviews, that's what happens when you have rude assistants, and subpar care and I have never dealt with a ruder vet than you. The reason you should pay half of the surgery is because the dog only needed surgery because your practice missed the clear signs of a blockage and instead told me it was a pancreas issue, if you had caught it like the other practice did in 5min it would've been an endoscopy not costing me thousands upon thousands for emergency surgery. You're just playing monday morning quarterback, unfortunately when it comes to pets lives that's not good enough

Very happy with our experience took our pit bull in for a stomach bug and they were extremely accommodating. Will be back soon & start taking both our dogs there from now on. Plus it's conveniently located by the water if you and your furry friend want to take a walk after. :)
