I approached H&R Block on 4/12/22 for my 2021 tax return. Sent all the relevant docs to the tax specialist on 4/13. I understand I reached out last minute and the tax specialist was busy. He got back to me on 4/18 and said I needed to go on an extension. I asked if I need to pay tax in advance if I owe because IRS will charge me monthly 0.5% penalty even if I have an extension. He said I will only be a few days late so don't worry about it. Then I paid $99 to file my extension. On the same day, he asked me a whole bunch of basic questions that I already included in the email I sent to him. On 4/20, I got his response that my tax preparation is done and ready for my review. I went online but couldn't find it. It turned out that my SSN was keyed in wrong. Finally, by the end of 4/22 I was able to review my tax return. To review, I had to pay tax prep fee of $505 fist (inclusive of the $99 I paid for my extension). The tax return was royally messed up: (1) my rental expense on Schedule E was wrong for the most part (missing depreciation, applied FY property tax on one property where I only rented it for a few months, treated state exit tax as property tax); (2) put State income the same as Federal AGI but I only lived in the state for 8 months; (3) a property sale was completely missed in the tax return; (4) no extension form 4868 was found which could be an indication that my extension was not successfully filed and I will owe monthly 5% penalty vs 0.5% penalty if extension was filed correctly. I sent my comments back on 4/26 (because it took me a while to review and correct the numbers) and have been waiting for an answer since then. I really don’t believe this is the level of expertise and experience I’d expect from H&R Block. Hope the issues can be resolved soon.

Sue Langton is amazing. She was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Sue was very professional. When I called to ask another question, she called me back immediately. She made me feel like I was her only client.

I chose to file online this year with a tax professional with the understanding that this process would be handled virtually. The entire experience was a NIGHTMARE and Susan Langdon dropped the ball several times. First, it took two weeks after I entered all of my information for anyone to get back to me. I reached out to Susan through the messaging platform and she eventually called, explaining that she needed additional info (stimulus payments and bank interest) before processing my taxes. She could have reached out a LOT sooner, but okay. She told me I owed money and then offered for me to come in. I explained that I did not feel comfortable going in and would prefer to do things online. My tax status in the H&R Block portal then completely disappeared and I was quite confused, assuming that I'd get prompted for payment/completion through the website. Eventually I got an email from a manager asking me to make payment as it was overdue. Even more confused, I reached out through email and did make the payment over the phone. I assumed that everything from then on was done, as I've worked with them for years and they do have my bank account on file. Then, I got a payment request from IRS with a voucher. My boyfriend and I called H&R Block, a bit angry and VERY confused. We got a manager on the line who was extremely rude and accusatory, telling us that it was on us - we should have told them to take my bank account info and pay the IRS. Please note at this point I have already paid them 160 dollars for something I could have done myself for free on TurboTax. The whole point of paying for a tax professional is paying for professional services, which I don't feel I received at all.I will never, ever go to H&R Block again and feel that this branch ruined my experience with their company. DO NOT USE THEIR ONLINE SERVICES, THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF AND THEN TELL YOU IT'S YOUR FAULT.
